It's like vanilla vs chocolate ice cream, pick your favourite and move on no need to debate your preference vs mine.
Btw, it's a blessing if DJ is your thing since you can get as much DJ as you can with a nice discount but it aint my thing |

I think you should buy and wear what you like. Not just any watch because it has “ROLEX” on it.

Well, I find there is a whole emotional side to watches, apart from expense. And certainly deciding on a new watch is not "trouble". And a luxury item such as a watch really isn't dependent upon practicality alone.
I love your DJ, but if I was getting another stainless steel dressier watch, or more versatile, to put it differently, my favorite would be a simple OP34. There is no date, and I could ask the same thing, why spend the extra money on a DJ? All depends upon tastes and priorities. This was my OP34, and I miss it, but would far rather have it than a DJ. Not because of cost, but I just prefer it: I do have a SubC 114060 on the way, hopefully I can pick it up in a short time. After years of collecting, flipping watches, I can't think of a better diver watch for me. I like the robust feel and weight of the watch, something that can't be experienced with a DJ or OP34. Anyway, that's my outlook on things. I have enjoyed this thread. Thank you. Cheers, Carl

Why go through trouble and expense of getting Sub (v. DJ)?
I bought a DJ the only time it felt appropriate to wear, in others words, the only time I was confortable wearing it was dinners out with my wife
The rest of the time it was too flashy and too dressy, it also was too big for my 6.5 inch wrist as it looked big I sold it for a loss and I am glad i got rid of it, honestly, it’s much nicer than my other Rolex’s but I pass, bigtime. By the way, the only person that wanted to wear it was my wife, before I sold it she wanted to keep it. I bought a gmt with the proceeds Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Personally I prefer the Datejust. The Submariner in my opinion looks too sporty for my taste. I prefer an elegant look vs a casual look 70% of the time so it works perfectly.

To chime in on my own thread. I agree it’s persobal preference and looks. I don’t care for the sub look nor do I have the wrist to pull it off. Also I’m in business casual most of the time. I got the date just because I’m more or less a one watch guy and it works for almost everything (I have a two simple iwc, one on black strap, one on brown, for when I meet with clients, go to court, or otherwise dress up because I don’t think the date just is a real dress watch).

TRF does not represent the real world. Most people DO prefer the DJ over the Sub. The DJ is by far their best selling model. They are both great watches, but for some reason on TRF, if you admit favoritism towards the DJ, you will be called an “old man”. Buy what appeals to you. Don’t be a sheep.

I always wanted a Sub. If you had asked me a year ago I honestly would not have been able to name or recognize any other model Rolex made. I knew there was at least one other model (since a friend was a Rolex underwater scholar and they gave her a Rolex as a part of the deal. But not a sub!).
I do prefer the 5 digit to the 6 digit subs since they are more understated. I'm not sure why I think of the DJ are more dressy. Probably the polished surfaces. I specifically did not want a date complication. I probably won't own more than one (I say that now but of course once you start...). If I got something else it would be a BB58 or something like that. Little more "playful" I guess. My general style is very casual. |

Most people crappy quartz watches to fine made mechanical watches. Most people prefer the Apple Watch to any traditional time piece. The Sub is the quintessential Rolex just as the Speedmaster is the quintessential Omega. For good reasons. The DJ is a great watch with a great history. Just to many people here, it’s not the same as the GMT, Sub, or Daytona. |

I started with a Sub, but both watches have their place. If I didn't already have a DD I would add a DJ to my collection.

I am a little lost on this post. I would understand why get a DJ over OP as a comparison. But in the watch world, the two you mentioned could not be more different. I’d take both. But a sports over classic any day of the week. Personal preference.

I have a DJ 41 SS and a SubC and a BLNR.
Like them all and wear them all, the SUBC is the one that gets the most wear. |

I prefer Sub , but I can see appeal of DJ. You can always consider OP39 or Explorer as good option.

Get what you like. I don't like what, in non-Rolex communities, we call "Desk Divers." The hard-core divers I know wear Seikos... and dive computers. (I barely dive... my Seiko is a Cocktail! ;) ) Just get what you want to put on.

Really just personal opinion
My first Rolex was a DJ II Roman fluted bezel and took only 6 months to realize I did not like it and too dressy for me. At the time I had a planet ocean but wanted something different. After a few watch sales got the sub and have had it for almost 3 years. Looking back the only DJ I would consider buying would be a smooth bezel with stick dial. I am not sure what I would do as when I got my Sub they were easy to come by. I am not sure if I would wait or just get the easily available DJ. |

As others have already said, it's about resale value. The unfortunate truth is that DJs tank and sports models hold their value.

I'm a pretty hard-core diver (Divemaster/instructor). And in 30 years of being in the water I'm not sure I have ever seen anyone wearing a watch of any kind underwater (unless a combo dive watch/computer). Or it's tucked under a wetsuit to keep it being beat up.

Aesthetics for me. The Datejust has definitely grown on me over time but I think it has a pretty big stigma as an old man's watch.
Timing bezel is quite useful as well. Overall, we are talking about entirely different watches. If we simplified things to this watch can do X things and that is all you need, then we could all get some pretty amazing bang for buck Seikos instead of the Sub as well. For me the history is a big part of the Sub as well but at the end of the day it is simply my favorite watch for an aesthetic perspective. I don't think the Datejust you posted looks remotely like my Submariner. It's a Rolex with an oyster case and a downgraded version of my bracelet. |

Sure is! Although I love the Sub, it's not for me.(Tried a 16610, wore it for a year but traded it in for a DJ.) I often feel for the folks on waiting lists, paying premiums or travelling to several AD's only to leave empty handed. I'd go nuts waiting for a year or even months for a watch. Certainly, buying a DJ, if you desire a Sub is foolish. Buying *anything* just for the sake if it will usually end in disappointment, loss of funds and frustration. It's already been said but those who want a Sub want a Sub. Those who want a Vette do not want a Camaro. And for the record: "old man's watch", "middle manager" and the other "smart" remarks are really not what I'm used to on TRF. I respect everyone's choice of timepiece regardless whether I like it or not. (Believe it or not I don't like every watch Rolex makes. But, I don't broadcast it.) In any event, the appeal of anything is subjective and personal. Diversity and variety are what makes the world interesting. Mark Sent from my SM-A520W using Tapatalk |

Plenty of good looking DJ's, but I'd be bored in a week.

DJ will be my next. All I ever have bought were sport models, and frankly, like them less and less due to all of the hype around them. DJ is very underestimated, and for that, I like it even more. Same could be said about a milly...

People want what they can’t have! Both are great watches. If there became a shortage of datejusts, there would be many here posting about wanting one.

Shortage issue may at part of increqsed desire of SS professionals but it really depends on what one wants too (at least for me)
I've had the chance to buy at msrp, the hulk, SD43, Sub, deepsea JC, and SkyD blue but turned them all down for various reasons (size, color, shape, look) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
