Starting over - 5513 vs 14060M

Lol you certainly are throwing a wrench into the mix! But two 5513 glossy dials in row sure look nice! They have a distinct roundness and warmth while still appearing modern which is appealing. Out of curiosity, are you very hard on it? I don’t plan to be completely careless, but it will be doing some fairly active outdoor hobbies!

Can’t go wrong with either choice. For me I ultimately decided that I’m not a vintage guy, love the way they look but worried about service and parts (and cost). I was able to find a really nice 2 liner for far less than a 5513.

Finding 5513 in good condition is not easy and would be costly. Also, you should know about every detail when buying vintage which is another issue. You can get 14060 2-liner which is the best closest thing to 5513 and widely available. Another option would be late 4-liner which has the same mechanism as the current 114060 and vintage feel at the same time. 14060 would serve better for daily use and sporting activities.

I'm not particularly hard on it, but it could stand up to robust daily wear, I have no doubt.

No issues with waterproofing, I wear it as part of a rotation mainly on a nato and don't baby it at all. I was looking at getting a 14060 but came across it by chance for not much more and have never regretted it. The 14060 is still a great choice though

I understand the appeal of vintage watches and the 5 Digit watches are beautiful and I have owned several over the years. With an active lifestyle I would go with a modern 114060 or SD4k if you want to part with the cash. I would buy slightly preowned but with a lot of warranty left. I do not have time to deal with the issues that arise from older watches. For me it is always something and then the issues with service or repair take away from my ownership experience. If you want to change straps get the right tools and you can make the change very quickly with a new model with no case holes. Good luck.

Just because of the potential fragility of a 5513 with the activities you described, I'd go with the more modern 14060M.

Funny. I just purchased a 14060 today. Been doing a lot of research on them recently. The most interesting thing to me about the 14060 is that Rolex kept the holes case and hollow endlinks right up until they moved to the 6 digits. Even though the date was updated with both these features long before it got the 6 digit update, Rolex stayed true to form with the 14060. I really like that.

I LOVE the look of a matte 5513. But I would more so HATE ruining the dial on one. While I’m sure a proper service and test every couple years would prevent it, it’s just not an exciting risk! Doing it to a gloss dialed model that would receive a gloss dial replacement is less worrisome

Most of my research came from searching the reference number in this forum and reading the different thread topics and posts. A lot of the questions I had about the 14060m others did a long time ago and they were answered by members here. Specifically I was looking for information about the 2 vs 4 line dials, COSC certification, hollow end end links, blue parachrom hairsprings, etc. the 14060 is an interesting model in that Rolex was still producing different variations up until it was discontinued for the 114060 .. there’s a lot to take into consideration when buying one.

If you want on the history of the submariner in general, Rolex Magazine and Rolex Passion Report have a lot of information regarding the history form the beginning.

I would go for a 5513 tritium, 2 liner. I have had a 14060M with rehaut, never liked it, I actually just sold it. To much text for such a little watch. You don’t notice the text as much when you have a sub date, but you do with a sub no date... I I ever get one again, it will be a 5513 Maxi.

This is the route I chose a couple years ago and for me it's the perfect watch. 6 months earlier I'd picked up the 14060 tritium dial and was perfectly happy with it but then a 14060M full set 2-liner came available and I couldn't pass it up. The plan was to sell the 14060 but you know how these things go. So I guess my point is you can't go wrong with either 14060 reference.

I am keen to research this further as I have my eye on one at the moment.
Incidentally, I have a 114060 which I wear almost daily. It is a great watch.
This lead to an itch to explore the 14060.

I've had a couple 14060M's over the last few years, and they are a great watch. Classic and timeless. They're also a bargain right now compared to other Rolex steel sports models on the secondary market. If you're looking for something to actually wear and use frequently I would go with the 14060M vs the 5513.

Check out a 16600 sea dweller. They seem underpriced in my opinion. Or another great option is the IWC 353602 Aquatimer. In my opinion the best aquatimer and you can find a complete set for around $4k
