Thanks. Funny part is I’m almost thinking I’ll be working less or not at all. All I really want to do is sit in the sun!! And go on vacation. Everyone tells me I’m nuts and I’ll get bored. But how will I know unless I try it. I really just want the ability to get up and go somewhere at any time.

Pretty much Dr's orders to quit or get really sick, so I opted to work on my own from home. Now working about 8-noon on my own terms and actually making the same of more than the 8-5 that was literally killing be from stress.

Would you prefer Buy side or Sell side?

I would say that if you are, for instance, financially independent already, then take the easier, less stressful sell side Wall Street job and make great money and have a more balanced life.
If you are earlier on in your career, and would really benefit from possibly hitting that home run of a buy side, high risk high return position and work your ass off, go for it. But assuming both positions are sweet Wall Street positions, providing great incomes and perhaps excellent feelings of accomplishment, go for the one that allows you to have a more balanced life. That's what I would do. I read the initial post and thought we were comparing a modest paying job to a seven digit job. It sounds now like both positions would keep you in Pateks and diamonds for the foreseeable future.

Always option 2. But that’s what it is in NYC.

Exactly what I thought when I read "skin in the game"

Being younger than you, I went for option 2 (90+ hours a week, lots of stress, had to invest a fair bit of money, worked with people I did not particularly like...) and got an amazing package but it was not bearable. Retrospectively, I was lured by the money but forgot that consistency is more important than anything else and that the body doesn't react well to a constant level of stress / travelling if you are no longer in your 20s. There is no point burning out especially if your financial sitution is fairly comfortable. Hope this helps! |

You'll never get back the time missed with your family. I know plenty if friends who regret making the choice to work more to the detriment if their family. And how many Patek and Rolex watches will make up for that loss? For me, having every minute repeater and impossible to get SS in the world wouldn't justify a damaged or lost relationship.

I guess I did #1, firefighter, then Lt . I LOVED going to work each and every day and night shift, weekends ,holidays didn’t matter ,it was like some look forward to deer camp or a ski weekend .
Worked 15 days a month plus a lot of shifts off. Golf leagues , motorcycle clubs ,all sorts of team sports, hunting ,fishing , camping trips with the brothers to fill up the off time . Still go out with my crew after “ last day in .” Retired at 59 , at the gym daily, hunt, boat ,travel , just spent a month in FLA, and planning which MLB parks to visit this summer . |
