I saw ACDC with Axel.

it was a great concert, no one expected it to be like Brian.

Honestly at that point I'd enjoy a Las Vegas impersonator much more.
Agree this is common sense but if it happened gradually we could have at least one acceptable example. Let's say the original members of the Rolling Stones are gradually replaced because of health issues or death or anything else and then there's just one of the founding guys but people are already used to the non OEM parts there. The last guy could also be replaced and the band could go on, but I know this is just in theory and we'll never witness something like that.

One thing not being mentioned here are the legalities. Generally a band owns its songs and when that entity adds new people or replaces old people there are legal documents that make it OK. A cover band, I’m guessing has to pay royalties to go on tour with someone else’s catalog and maybe that is prohibitively expensive.

Don’t know the legal stuff. Always seemed strange that Michael Jackson owned the Beatles library at one point. Think his heirs still do.

Not sure how all this works for a band planning to go on tour.

Very true my friend. It plays a large part that's for sure and not only in this specific case but in almost every aspect of people's lives. Reminds me the first phrases in Law's Empire by Ronald Dworkin “We live in and by the law … it makes us what we are …”

No and frankly at that point I’d rather see a top notch cover band for 1/10 the price.

You do realize that two of the Beatles are still alive don't you?

Right, and are they currently singing and touring in a band called the Beatles. And with members still alive, if three new guys started performing concerts as Run-DMC would that be the same.
My point stands.

I saw Foreigner last night and they were good but I kept thinking, 6 out of the 7 guys didn't even record an album. I think at the least the group needs to have the original singer and a main guitarist/drummer.

The NY Philharmonic and The Chicago Symphony are pretty good bands I hear.
Pretty sure there are no Original members left since they started in 1842 and 1891 respectively, and they both sound better than ever.

If we are talking about the crap that is pop, rock, rap, etc., it's not worth it either way anyway. LOL

It is the quality of the music that survives, period. If it doesn't then it isn't quality music, i.e. Whitesnake, et al.

Interesting perspective.

I think rock, pop and rap could be considered as "people's" music that lives or dies on its own. It's much like the traveling minstrels that traveled around playing to the common people and playing music that fit with the times and the mood of an era. Interestingly, almost everyone's favorites are deeply tied to when they hit puberty or were adolescents.

I'm guessing the Symphonies and the 'classics' are all heavily subsidized by benefactors or they would all but disappear.

I like tons of different kinds of music and it surprises me that a person that likes one kind can't realize the benefit and enjoyment from other kinds.

Those are just cover bands anyway. It’s not like they write their own music. You aren’t hearing the original music, you’re hearing the current conductor’s interpretation of the music.

Cover bands for sure, with their average audience age hearing the originals... and now longingly reminiscing.

Actually, they are not cover bands. They often play/premiere new music from modern day composers as well as play old works.
To say they are cover bands is completely ignorant.

Are you suggesting that I am that person who likes just ONE kind of music? If so, you are way off base as Classical isn't even my favorite or even second favorite.
But "classic" rock, pop, rap, is mostly junk for the masses. It's like food stamp music. And nearly all of it dies after the generation in which it was created passes.
Mahler, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Ellington, Basie, Bernstein, Porter, there is a reason their music continues generation after generation. There are some great rock tunes that will live forever because they are great music by good (rarely great) musicians, but most of it dies out quickly, thankfully.

I read somewhere that by law the rights revert back to the original owner at some point. Have no idea if that is true. I also read Paul has had many opportunities over the years to buy the rights back but always balked because it was always a part of a bigger package and not just the rights to the Beatles songs alone.

I vaguely remember John and Paul creating Northern Songs just so they would have the ability to own the copy right to their own music. Unfortunately at some point during the late sixties to early seventies when they were going through all of that legal mess they decided to sell Northern Songs.

I think again the article I read stated that according to law and maybe that was just British Law after a certain period all rights return to the original owner. The article itself for all I know could have been incorrect.

It's sort of like Lin Manuel Miranda and the Broadway show Hamilton.

Miranda invented the concept, put everyone together, spent 7 years writing all the songs/lyrics but the producers own the show. So when the show makes billions he get a piece but not that much in comparison. But he does own the music along with his collaborators.

I listen to a LOT of classical music and have two family members who play in symphony orchestras. They always play someone else’s music, which is exactly what a cover band does.

Whereas, the OP is talking about original artists playing their own music. Once all the band members are replaced they are essentially a cover band, just like your symphony.

They must play in very minor symphonies then, kind of like cheap cover bands.
Real symphonies play old and new quite frequently, but don't let your ignorance stand in the way of your opinion.

I saw Bob Seger last night. He's 74 years old now and can still bring it. What surprised me was that 3 other members of the Silver Bullet Band were there. They have been with the band since the 70's.
