Would be interested to hear what your "big deal - minted" Ireland theory is actually based on? Certainly plenty of Rolex over here......and no shortage of BMW/Mercedes either....and no one looks twice at them.

There is not a lot of people wearing Rolex down south, yes there are plenty of BMW’s & Mercedes owners but I have only seen a handful of people wearing luxury watches. There is only the one Rolex AD in the city of Dublin & there are no Grey Dealers so that puts this into context don’t you think

Hi Larry, yeah I have worked out how to take photos with the phone at last. As a sixty three year old I come from a very different era, so it has taken me some time to master new social media devices. Yeah I am still loving the Daytona

That's is why I use my Rolex watches every where, including job. People have no idea what I am wearing and it pass unnoticed except to my attention!

Dublin is one of the richest cities in Europe, and certainly has plenty of people wealthy enough to own a Rolex. I personally know a guy who owns upwards of 6 - from days of yore when they were easier to get. When his Father had his stolen he just sent him one of his “spares” (a gold DateJust).

On the issue of others noticing, I have only had mine (an SD43) for a few months but as far as I can tell nobody other than my neighbour, who is really into watches, has noticed. Until I started wearing a borrowed Hulk recently, to see if I liked the smaller sized watch. In only a week I have had three people comment, though none realised it was a Rolex.

I suspect it is the colour rather than it being a Rolex that people have noticed, it is not often you see someone wearing a green watch!

I completely disagree with you, as a native Dubliner who has lived in this city for sixty three years, I have seen it all, if Dublin is as you say one of the richest cities, why is there so much immigration among our youth mainly people in the medical profession, why is there nearly 10,000 people homeless, whole families been put up in B & B’s on a weekly basis, why is there so much unemployment in this great city. I do not want to turn this into a political debate but I think I am in a better position to know more about Dublin than you do. It is not that long ago that we came out of a recession that took it’s toll on the people of Ireland So you know someone who owns six Rolex’s & could give his father a gold Datejust, I can assure you that is NOT the norm over here. There is only one Rolex AD In Dublin & no Grey Dealers why is that, it’s because not a lot of people can choose to buy Rolex’s. As I have visited the one Rolex AD in Dublin Weir & sons of Grafton Street, they also have another store in Dundrum, on numerous occasions I can tell you that the staff are finding it hard to shift stock, not only Rolex but all the luxury brands that they are agents for. Yes people do purchase luxury watch brands but it is not as you portray it, like everywhere in the world there are affluent people over here but certainly not on the grand scale that you seem to think

There are many factors related to one receiving a compliment on their Rolex.

Cultural factors, demographic factors and economic factors lead the list. In many cultures it is unclear if silence means a failure to observe knowingly. In many countries it depends upon the circles and locales you frequent.

In some urban zones you will see less Rolex penetration due to disposable income and the way it is spent. As for Dublin itself, there are many reasons Rolex could be afforded - but maybe Omega (or another brand) is more prevalent.

In a broad brush, Dublin is Ireland’s economic hub. As the seat of the national parliament and the hub of Ireland's import and export trade, there are likely more Rolex owners than other Irish cities.

Dublin is also home to many multinational corporations in IT, media, financial services and Pharma. Bank of Ireland, CRH plc, Ryanair, Smurfit Kappa and Paddy Power all have HQ’s there.

So I’d say reticence to comment is more prevalent than the number of Rolexes on wrists.

Now in Dublin, Georgia - if someone notices your Rolex it would be a different matter...

I was walking around an antiques fair and just left a tent when I heard someone ask from behind, “Is that a new Explorer?” I turned around and realized it was the antiques dealer. I was pleasantly surprised by his interest in my watch and we chatted for quite some time about all things Rolex.

Not sure which parts of Dublin you hang around but I see plenty of Rolex in the wild here when I'm out and about. I've never commented nice watch though unless I know the person.

Commenting on watches is generally not observed anywhere in the world I've been and isn't proportionate to how rich or how many Rolex owners around.

For example I spend a lot of time in Hong Kong where people serving your coffee wear Rolex, never had comments about my watch over there. Don't really care if others notice if I'm wearing a nice watch or not tbh.

There is plenty of money in Dublin, but Irish people generally don't spend money on watches or luxury items, mainly stuff like holidays, cars and booze. If you think Dublin has a homeless problem, then go check out places like HK or SF, a lot more homeless and they definitely places with money. But true, not many WIS in Dublin, I see people commenting how nice a person's Michael Kors watch is.

I am sure that this young person has great aspirations and thus knows of the finer things in life. Many smart, young people start in entry level positions such as this example.

I have an Explorer II polar and had a friend's wife say it was a cool watch. She then took a close look and said"Wow! It's a Rolex." She then berated my friend that he should get one too.

I take on board what you are saying regarding HK or SF having far more homeless, but what you have to take into account is the size difference & the population of these cities, as compared to Dublin, But I do agree with you that people over here just don't spend money on luxury items such as watches. As to where I hang around in Dublin, I spend most of my time in the city centre

I come from what is often described as the worst place to live in England , A poor working class Town but I still often see many Rolex out in the wild .
I've seen Hulks and a couple a ceramic Daytonas including a woman wearing one.
There are still quite a few people that work in the Oil industry around here so maybe them and the usual professional types plus the odd drug dealer
I think the main reason might be that we still have a AD in the Town that has had the Rolex franchise for 60 years

It seems strange that a decent size City like Dublin doesn't have more owners

It is funny you should have said that about drug dealers, I was just about to say that myself.I am from the north inner city in Dublin & if you were to believe the powers that be you couldn't get a worse place to live, where gun crime is almost a daily occurrence. But even here the drug dealers are more likely to be driving around in BMW's rather than wearing a Rolex, though you do get some that do both. But I am not talking about where I live, I am mainly in the City Centre of Dublin where all the business outlets are centered & I rarely come accross anyone wearing Rolex

I was in London all day yesterday, visited 2 museums, Harrods, and a bar in the City, before dining at a somewhat expensive and well known restaurant.

The only Rolex I saw on wrist was my own, and on one of the sales assistants in Harrods.

I do not infer from this that nobody in London wears Rolex.

I'd say Dubai is all smoke and mirrors. It's rife with fakes. I spot 1-5 fakes on a 3 day trip to Dubai and I don't even go places like Barasti. Some 24 year old real estate agent trying to make it, is going to Karama Mall or ordering a Noob online to have the "look" and the "success" he's enjoying in Dubai (yet he's in debt and is sharing bedroom with another bloke).

Singapore on the other hand is a place where people do swim in $. I see so many amazing models there. Once saw a guy bike around with a 5164A on.

I've probably had a handful of compliments on my watches "in the wild". Recently was on my 5980 in Hong Kong. AD employers tend to give the compliments where's due when they notice what you're wearing.

Yes I would agree with all you said. Most people on the street wouldn’t recognize a Rolex, but further still would not recognize any luxury Watch brand. Agreed if you walk in to a Rolex AD they immediately know that you are wearing a Rolex & will comment on it, probably only to get your attention in the hope that you are there to purchase another one
