It’s a bit cheeky, but I’d actually take that deal.

Technically, they only want you to buy something worth $2000. They would just like you to pay $4000.

I think it's a pretty smart move to make a few purchases from an AD in an effort to build a good relationship, but those purchases must be items that I'd buy anyway.

The only concession toward that AD would be to choose to do business with them, rather than with someone else.

If an AD told me that I'd have to buy B in order to get A, I'd walk straight out the door.

I understand that one must often curry favor with dealers by establishing a purchase history. But this is utterly classless.

Now, on the other hand, what's the current grey market premium on a Sub? Let's say it's $2k; all you then have to do is pick a $4k piece of jewelry you think you can sell for $2.5k and you're ahead...

Seems crazy. Wouldn't it be far easier and cheaper to buy from a trusted seller on here?

I wouldn’t buy it there!
Try your luck at other ADs or TSs

As a lawyer, it is extortion not blackmail unless he had incriminating pics of you as leverage.

If a Rolex AD is using Rolex watches to leverage sales of other brands, I think Rolex HQ would be interested to hear about it.

If the deal works for you, and there’s anther piece you’re happy to own, fair enough.

Otherwise, walk away.

Agreed! I would be writing to the Rolex HQ to let them know about it.
It's time we started to push back against these practices when we can.

Thanks for all the responses! I think the general consensus is walk, unless there is another piece that I really want. In answer to that, there are many pieces that I want but buying one if those would probably end up costing the same price as I could go and buy a 2019 2nd hand sub and the same other item new but discounted. I'm talking some Tudor pieces (he doesn't have a bb58 or Tudor gmt) or omega 300m seamaster. If the exchange rate was more favorable then it may be a different story, I remember buying a watch in the late 90's and even after paying import duty it still offered a considerable saving.

I actually think this is quite common practise......

I've bought a 31mm gold and steel datejust for my wife and a blue dial gold and steel sub for myself in the last 8 months.
I can't even get on the waiting list for a 43mm Red Seadweller.
It was suggested to me that a "nice" jewelry purchase would help get on the waiting list.
I asked how much is nice?
She said I'll get back to you.....
That 2 months ago.

Still waiting.

I think it may be common practice, the difference is that some AD's say it how it is, some may hint and the rest just hope you'll play ball without them having to give you a nudge.

If you want both watches, buy them. If you don't, don't. It's a watch, not a dialysis machine.
