I agree. Saying that TRF is a great forum would be an understatement.

Look through the countless threads that are full of 'your great', 'thanks for sharing', 'i love you', 'we're the best', 'what would i do without you all'.
Come on, tell me it's not bile inducing.
I hear it on the telly (in the background while i'm reading). Mutual congratulation. I think it's bollocks.
PS. I never thought i'd say this but 'merci' to our French friend and why didn't you beat the Irish.

Look, Martin, if TRF is so "bile inducing" and it's all "bollocks," why do you even participate here. That's what I don't understand. There are plenty of other watch fora on the net that are much more contentious. If you'ld like, I could PM you some of their names and URLs. But I don't see the point of you bad mouthing TRF and continuing to participate. That's what puzzles me.

I'm not saying that TRF is a bad site. Far from it.
I'm saying all the self congratulation and how brilliant everyone is is pretty awful. I'm sure you can see that.
As for other watch sites, i only came across this one when i became an owner. I'm not WIS, i'm a free man!!!!

Well, all I can say is, if you've frequented other watch fora to any great degree, you would begin to understand why the members here are so appreciative of what TRF provides. Maybe the accolades get to be a bit much, but I think it's in large part a reaction to some other fora that are on the net (and not only watch related ones - I've heard some horror stories about car, gun, and all kinds of other fora).

I think that other foras dealing with cars, guns etc inherently create an element of competition among their members...i.e. "my car is faster than yours", "i am better at shooting than you"...whereas the worst scenario for TRF is that one may say "my watch keeps better time than yours" or that "the Daytona sucks, long live the Sub"
So it should be normal and healthy that we TRF members are friendly and nice to one another since our passion is about Rolex (in particular and this is also important) watches and horology. Some forums need that element of competition and dispute to survive...TRF imho should stay as it is!

Different people appreciate watches (their own and others) with varying degrees of enthusiasm and pleasure.

Owning a nice watch, be it a Rolex or whatever, is a privilege and good fortune. Some watches are difficult to come by because of scarcity or the cost of acquisition. In congratulating a member for acquiring a new watch, other members are simply in effect expressing their appreciation of possibly one or more of several feelings such as: a) sharing a scarce or rare watch; b) sharing photos of watch that show a watch that one may not otherwise see; c) appreciating another's positive experience, etc.

All these are real expressions. People generally come here to relax and escape the issues that they may otherwise have to deal with in real life.

I would much rather have and engender a positive, friendly, informative and supportive forum than one which condones negative and devisive activity.

This is a great place to air opinions (including dissenting ones) and to draw upon the vast knowledge of its members. By no means are people lock-step in their opinions. I know I'm not the only member whose heart isn't all aflutter over a Daytona, doesn't like NATO straps on Rolexes, or doesn't like the trend of women wearing a man's 40 MM watch. But, I know that everyone has their own tastes and opinions, and people don't mind dissenting voices if you do so politely. After all, someone is buying the leopard Daytonas! Just saying "Submariners suck, Omega Seamasters rule" doesn't convey any information, and is just insulting.

I'm pretty grounded in the reality of the vast extent of not just evil in the world, but widespread incivility throughout society. I don't, however, think there's anything "bile inducing" about the polite treatment we afford each other on TRF. To the contrary, I would be thrilled beyond belief if people "in the wild" started treating each other the way people do on TRF. If anything, my daily commute to downtown Los Angeles would be far more pleasant if that were the case.

Well mopsey, as Ed said, if this place sickens you that much, it's simple a matter of closing the tab. Far be it from us to go out of our way to torture you, although one would have to seriously question what else we have to do with all the time we have on our hands.

If your wish is for the mods to treat you like an adult, so be it. As an adult, you have the power to decide if you wish to inflict all this misery upon yourself, draining those bile ducts every time you see what you choose to interpret as self-congratulation. As an adult, you may also appreciate that whether or not such self-congratulation continues is entirely beyond your control and that you may as well get used to the idea that it's here to stay. As an adult, you may choose to simply go with what is within your control and either accept the nature of the forum as it stands or relieve yourself of this gut-wrenching angst by simply not accessing the website - the last time I checked, nobody was holding a gun to your head to come here.

So, you wish to be treated as an adult, I will treat you like an adult and expect you to do what is within your control and what is best for yourself. From your outpouring of pain on this thread, the obvious adult thing to do would be to leave.

On the other hand, having had it laid out to you on no uncertain terms that no amount of bleating will change the nature of this forum, any further complaint will simply be the act of a petulant child who stamps his feet and demands the unreasonable. In such an event, the message you would be sending out to me is that you are not prepared to act as an adult and demand instead to be treated as a child, and at that one who has spat out his dummy. I have no compunction about responding accordingly.

So, once again, I will treat you as an adult with the intelligence and maturity to make a reasoned choice. You can choose to act as an adult, or you can choose to be treated as a child. The outcome of this will be entirely of your own making.

Pardon me for the congratulations, Steve, but that is a well-reasoned post. Perhaps some of us have become jaded, or, dare I opine this, find it "cool" or "sophisticated" to be blase about things, revealing only our personal shortcomings. It seems all too easy to forget the excitement of getting our first Rolex, Omega or even Rado ( to JJ), and one of the key characteristics of this forum is that we don't allow this excitement to be forgotten, and we don't allow other to pour selfishly cold water on a new owner's excitement for the sake of their own image.

It's a very sad day indeed when someone stops appreciating the "new car smell", and damned if we're going to let the fun be taken away.

WOW!! Just went through this entire thread.....and what can I say??

Martin (mopsey).....I am a little surprised and saddened by your numerous outbursts - just didn't expect that from you.

You are a highly respected member here......so what suddenly went wrong? Why this sudden turn? It took you over 800 posts to realise you were the wrong man in the wrong place?

Take a deep breath, my friend, relax and maybe take a few days off TRF. When you come back, you can pick and choose from the numerous posts that would have accumulated during your absence and then just reply to those that appeal to you.

Go well, buddy - JJ

I'm happy. A watch dealer once told me the only reason watch forums exist is so that the members can post pictures of their watches and others will ooh and ahh over them. I called bs and told him to check out this forum. Yes, we do gush over each others pictures but I have connected with quite a few folks here that were it not for geography I'm sure I'd be hoisting a pint or two with on a regular basis. Enjoy the strap Jim and I look forward to seeing you this summer when you can pay for it in beer.

I've had the honor of throwing back a few pints with Martin [and Simon] at the end of our London GTG. Martin's a good bloke. If we were all at a pub this discussion would be interesting, strong opinions would be expressed, but friends we would remain. Some of this does not translate via keyboard. We've all rolled our eyes at certain repeated inane questions.:thinking And he has a point that TRF can be a bit overly sweet at times. However, I'd rather error on sweet than sour.
Martin is a great bloke and a friend of mine. TRF is a great forum.

I respect your opinion, Dan, but looking at the exchange between Martin and Ed, it's difficult to understand why Martin would choose to escalate things to the extent of calling it "all bollocks" when Ed was maintaining a reasonable approach to the discussion. I can't see how Martin's replies to Ed were in any way reasonable, especially when nobody is being coerced into interacting with the members that he complains about.

And I hope that this discussion does not deter Martin from attending the London GTG this upcoming Sunday. I would love to continue our discussion over a pint or a nice single malt.

I hear you and you have a valid point. Ed, ever the diplomat, tried to steer things back to common ground. It's just that things like this tend to take on a life of their own. Anyone who knows me will tell you I don't suffer fools gladly. If I thought Martin was a fool then good riddens. But I found him to be a good guy who's company I really enjoyed.
