34yo here - Briefcase from State bags for daily use, victorinox backpack for travel. Both can fit my 17in work laptop and some other random stuff while still being slim and minimalistic.

I don’t use a laptop. This Hermès Kelly briefcase can handle my 12” iPad Pro and my 9.7” pro at the same time if I need. It handles all the essentials to and from the office or on business trips where I don’t want to go Tumi.

I travel with a tumi backpack as my carry on, plus a small briggs and riley 2 wheel case. in an office, may depend on the culture

I got lucky and upgraded from my victorinox messenger bag to this Tumi T pass laptop/briefcase bag. Has the original shoulder strap and dust bag. Paid a whopping $10 for it

Interesting you mention Filson, aren’t they owned by shinola? I know shinola made watches for them weren’t sure if the brands were associated in any other way though. The filson watches also appear to be more rugged watches and very well built from what I’ve seen. Always wondered why shinola didn’t hold their company to their standards

No but plenty of stuff can be bought to portray it. Ie. Rolexes.

Class can also be exhibited through material things (regardless of price). So yes, in this case, class can be "bought" in a store.

Just my .02 here, but material things don't necessarily equal class. I'm sure we all know at least one rich a-hole as well as some very classy people who may be in less fortunate circumstances.

I was referring to briefcase vs. Backpack debate. Evidently material things don't matter.

My point was - if one had to choose between those two, a briefcase adds class. IMO

Cheers

Understood and agree - which is why I go with a briefcase for my daily routine

I don’t think you know what class is if you think a material thing endows you with it.

Now, ifyou think a brief case is classy, that’s a fine interpretation. But it doesn’t give you class. Only your actions can do that.

And yes - perhaps we can divide class in 2 categories - character and style. I was referring to the latter

I use a canvas messenger bag from Colcasac. Sturdy and light, two compartments plus a few inner pockets. Its casual - not business.

This is a beautiful briefcase.

There is nothing I would sling over my shoulder instead of carrying a case like this.

Yeah, this is well said Abdullah, and I think clarify the point I was making in my earlier post about walking in to a meeting with a classy briefcase compared to a backpack. The briefcase does not give me class, any more then a backpack takes it away, it’s just for me, walking in with a classy briefcase gives me a bit of a swagger, a little psychological boost. But that’s just me. Items, whether they be backpacks, briefcases, Rolexes; never make the man.

PS (I don’t think Turbo was implying that either).

With Hermès they still make anything (almost), you just have to custom order. I don’t believe stores are stocking them.

Ordering new is about $8k or $9k, I think.

Daily I use a Briggs & Riley rolling briefcase.

When I fly, I switch to a Samsonite laptop backpack, smaller and easier than the rolling case.

Messenger brief

My go to is a messenger style briefcase. One of my pet peeves is people who walk along the aisle on a plane with a backpack on, basically hitting anyone sitting down when they turn. Don’t want to end up being one of those guys.
