Just asking so that we can avoid things like this.
We were walking at 6:30 pm in the evening and the streets were crowded

I was trying to see if anybody was looking at us because there are usually lots of security officers there but unfortunately there was none of them at that time. Well if you don't want to get physical you better try to grab people's attention by raising your voice or shouting if there are any people passing by that is !

I'm sorry for the trauma, but you did well my friend. Many times people have looked back and thought I COULD have done this or that, but you walked away without drama, and only loss is a lousy mobile.

Yes, I agree that it would have been handy to have a bazooka and blow them away, BUT, you would spend the next month of Sundays filling in paperwork, forms, having to appear in court etc etc... I think your time is more valuable than that.

Unfortunately, gives us Greeks a bad name...

I'm glad you are O.K. physically but sorry for you emotionally, man that must have been a very frightening experience.

Also loosing your phone is really bad.

I would be doomed if i had the wallet with me

They would get credit/debit cards, ID card etc.

I am sort of glad that most of the times I leave all the gizmos at home except from my watch

And I am really thinking about insuring it now

Well panicking never helps

One move at a time and you might have a small loss

However i was extremely worried about the girl when i saw one of the guys approaching her

Hey Velitsko,

Glad to hear you and the girl are okay after that encounter!! A tricky situation very well handled, buddy!!

Why the hell didn't you just clonk him over the head with that heavy GMT-IIC? That would have surely made all of them turn tail and run!!!

I'm glad you're okay file! You handled things really well.

I know you're from Salonika but from my experience, Athens really sucked, we got stopped and hassled by beggars/druggies almost everywhere we went. Lucky for us, things never took such an ugly turn. It's a shame as Greece used to be one of the safest countries in Europe up until the late 80's/early 90's. I remember being able to walk the streets and catch public transport at night without any worries. Not anymore unfortunately.

And speaking to people thing have been getting worse not just in Greece but generally everywhere.

Although i wasn't around, the 50's and 60's were a golden era compared to the present and where things are heading.

I was walking in the city center with a girl and suddenly a guy stopped us. Well initially, I thought that he was a beggar as he asked for 1-2 euros and I told him that i didn't have any money on me( honestly i didn't have any money my wallet was at home ), but then he raised his voice and asked me for money and I replied: "hey man i have no money". Then, he said let me search your pockets and when he tried to approach me I thought that that was the time to punch him but seconds after the thought I realised that there was one of his buddies near the girl and the guy that was trying to approach me had a screwdriver.

Then i told him "ok listen I have my mobile phone with me but I want my sim card". He said ok and then i gave him my phone after taking out my sim card ( luckily i had my old 30$ nokia with me so I didn't care that much). Then he started talking to the girl and telling her in greek that he is really sorry for all of this but the girl with that was with me was not greek and i was SO worried because usually they attack foreigners here in greece so i was trying to grab his attention in order not to bother the girl that was with me and realise that she is not greek( the girl was sort of shocked ).

Well in the end, he called his buddies and they said that they were really sorry for what happened ( what kind of criminals are those guys ) and that they got out of jail 2 days ago and they were begging me not to call the police.

I told them: "just leave you got a phone and leave us alone"

If that guy would realise that I had a rolex well things would be much more complex I guess I was lucky and honestly I was really worried for the girl

Anyway I am happy that nobody was hurt and who cares for a 30$ mobile phone

Take care guys/gals
Frostie,

If what those idiots said was accurate about just getting out of gaol it will not be too hard for you to pick them out from an identification folder and press charges.

Do follow it through please. It does not matter whether the phone was worth $30.00 or $30K! What if they stab someone else. Follow it through................Screwdrivers can still easily kill and injure victims of crime.

Regards,
Michael

Here's an idea. Just carry around a picture of JJ with you. If this ever happens again, just show it to the muggers and they will run like hell

Glad you're OK but I do think you need to contact the authorities. You would feel terrible if they encounter someone not as quick thinking as you and things turned ugly and someone gets seriously hurt or even killed.
