Why aren't Watches Made of Silver?

A Lange & Sohne uses solid silver dials.

Silver won't tarnish if you have a sealed environment like a watch and especially if that environment contains copper as a sacrificial oxidation metal.

Edit: I take that back. After reading a bit more it appears that Rolex indeed uses an alloy for their „white gold“ that has large portions of other metals. So not really „gold“ in that sense but like I had said before I really don’t care for any of that either way. Give me nice stainless steel any day over the other stuff.

White gold is gold alloyed with other metals to the point it becomes “white”

18k white gold contains the same amount of pure gold as 18k yellow gold does and you’ll see that Roles WG watches are usually more expensive than their yellow gold counterparts

High end white gold watches are not rhodium plated - hence they have a warmth to their colour not present in steel or platinum watches.

White gold jewellery is often, but not always, rhodium plated to achieve a finish closer to platinum.

My and my wife’s wedding rings are unplated white gold. Personally I prefer the “warmer”look which is closer to palladium.
