Move from NY to TX?

I go to Dfw area every other week and its awesome. It makes me feel where I live is a rip off I see myself in Dallas within a few years.

I’ll offer my two cents.

I’m a Native Texan. Born in Dallas, Tx and spent the majority of my childhood growing up in North Dallas. I moved to the Northeast to finish college and attend Law School; currently living south of Boston. While there are many aspects I enjoy about living North especially the Fall, being so close to the ocean, the scenery, and the first snowfall I do miss the South and look forward to moving back. Considering my wife is from Massachusetts, and we are both gainfully employed in the Northeast, need to be prudent in the planning; however, when the opportunity presents to move back home, will take advantage of it.

Shes an allergist at a private practice here in NY. There seem to be a ton of allergy practices in the DFW area.

I think you will love Texas. There are more people flocking there for lower taxes, job opportunities, great weather and quality of life probably more than any other state. Several cities in the state consistently make the best places to live list. I have a high school mate who relocated from NYS to Austin area for IBM job maybe 20 years ago. He loves it and says will never leave. That speaks volumes. Best of luck whatever you and the wife decide.

I live in Frisco. It is definitely booming, and many of the people who live here are from other places.

There are plenty of houses being built, the schools are good, lots of restaurants and retail.

It's safe, quiet, affordable and the commutes are not terrible, and will get better as they are currently doing improvements to improve traffic capacity.

The downside is that is geographically uninteresting. There are a few lakes nearby, but nothing to get excited about. Culturally you can go to Dallas (45 minutes away) and find almost anything that interests you. Good museums, opera, symphony, live music, art galleries are all there. But it's not NYC by any means.

It's a good place to raise a family in relative peace and safety, and a good value for your money.

If you want peace and quiet, a big, new nondescript mini-mansion and can handle the summers, it may be right for you!

Been in N Dallas for a little over 3 yrs now. It is growing on me, but it is a big, flat city. It is huge geographically and you won’t leave your “pocket” to much as traffic is not ideal. It has restaurants and shopping galore. I really don’t find the summers that bad. It isn’t as humid as Missouri was and there is always a breeze it seems. I think having a pool is great.

In my field I’m having a hard time finding friends. I’ve always made friends at work, but it has been difficult here. Also, everyone thinks this area is exploding and moving here. While good in many aspects, traffic is getting worse and depending on your profession, competition for your job may actually drive your salary down a bit. I can’t believe some of the offers I’ve had.

Frisco is still growing like mad and schools are having some difficulty keeping up. Before you decide on buying I’d really explore the area more. While I’m not in Frisco I think I’d rather be closer to Dallas than I am. Richardson is doing very well still and way more central giving you more access to the geography.

If I were to move here, I’d recommend getting a month to month or 6 month lease on a house to explore more. Also unless you want to live on your car, your work commute should be a factor. That is another issue when I think of it. I had some decent offers (not mind blowing), but they were in Fort Worth. To make commute worth it, I’d have to move. Not really ideal. Basically research research research. Good luck.

I’ll add my thoughts as well. Live in DFW and have for the past 6 years. It’s a great place to live in my experience but I’m in my late twenties.

Shopping, food are all excellent maybe not NY level but definitely up there.
Summers are hot but I find them bearable, and I spend some times outside for work.

Landscape is uninspiring but you have Americans super hub, and can now fly to almost anywhere out of DFW. If want any more info let me know.

I know. I've heard just about everything. Lived in NY my whole life, but honestly, I'm tired of the lifestyle and what comes with is. Traffic everywhere. Annoying winters. Commuting time is not great. Housing market is obscene. State income tax.

We recently spent a week north of Dallas and I really liked it. No traffic, huge roads, tons of places to eat, very nice developments. A little heavy handed on the whole "Texas" identity, but I had a great time. I know visiting and living in a place are two different things, but we have some family that made a similar move and they seem to love it.

I think I'm just over it. Yeah, the city is great in bursts, I love pizza, and a lot of friends and family are here, but I think I'm ready for a change. Don't want to spend the rest of my life living how I'm living now to only take advantage of nice weather and an easier lifestyle when I'm much older.

Been looking at places around Flower Mound and Frisco. Some very nice new developments with new houses being built as we speak. A million dollar (or less) house in TX in a brand new gated community seems great compared to spending a million in NY to get some 45 year old shack in a nice area in Westchester or if I'm forced to, Long Island.

At a crossroads. I'm planning on getting my MBA over the next two years. So realistically it wouldn't be something that happens immediately, but I think I want to push for it.

I’m sorry to hear you had such a poor experience wherever you lived. I’m extremely happy and I could pickup and move to any city in the world tomorrow if I wanted to. I’m not tied to any specific region for work nor is my wife.

Native New Yorker here, no way in hell I would ever ever ever think of even living in NY again...even visiting has it's limits.
I spent a career in the military moving all over the place, now I'm in the Dallas area and love it. Frisco is quite nice but most of the activities I'd like to do are in Dallas, Plano would be a better compromise but houses are a bit more. Lots of great choices to the north, with small compromises between them.

Spot on. I lived in Richardson and absolutely love that area but houses are a bit expensive comparatively speaking.

Lived near Destin back in the day, best place hands down I've ever lived. Safe and gorgeous. General career opportunities are limited though. All of Florida is generally great though.

Just remember one thing; Most northerners including NYers usually always move to the south to retire. NO southerners ever move to the north to retire. At least none of them I have experienced in my 55 years on the planet. Your derogatory label is offensive, as I'm sure there are plenty others here who have relocated from the Empire state to greener pastures.

I can maybe offer some advice.

I just moved down to Houston from New Jersey. There's a lot I like here and a lot I miss back home. For one, the people in Texas are friendlier imo. Also the cost of living is much better and I feel like I'm getting better value for my dollar. Also, so many food options, although I do miss good Italian food/pizza.

Downside would be the weather and I left most of my immediate family back in New Jersey, so I miss them a lot. I'm not married and am still in my early twenties so maybe this would be less of an issue for you.

Yes I am aware people generally retire to warmer climates and lower taxes. I do not blame them. Life is short. I for one am only 31 and nowhere near the age where I feel it necessary. I also find southern summers intolerable with my thick yankee skin

I feel like a fish out of water in every single southern city I have visited and I have been to most of them.

Try Romano's on West Gray. Two brothers from Brooklyn came down 20+ years ago and started their fast casual cucina Italiano. Their adult sons are now working alongside them. Great thin crust NY style pizza and red sauce pasta with some other specialties.
