It's more the mentality than the expense that puts most people off buying a Rolex, when you can buy a watch for £50, spending 100 times that amount is just not conscionable for most normal people, even tho with a bit of saving many could actually do it, most people have other priorities for their luxury spending, we are a select group.

Seems certain purchases are above scrutiny whilst others are sometimes frowned upon. Doesn’t bother me. What you choose to do with your money is up to you.

I agree! Had this conversation yesterday with a guy. Within reason it all depends on what you want and how bad you want it. My wife and I choose to live quite humbly on a budget but I enjoy the hell out of my watch collection and she has her vices too. We drive sensible cars, live in a sensible home, take sensible vacations, split when we eat out (more for the calories than money). We only spend excessively on what brings us joy.

Agree with the OP, most of the things in life nowadays are actually a waste of money.

Example my office colleagues thrives on showing off their Starbucks almost everyday. That’s a good 4bucks a pop for your Americano not to mention those with whipped cream and the works.

Me I like to save money on these trivial things and spend on things that don’t lose value or even appreciates. After land, bonds, savings and watches, I’ve been into gold coins, rings and bracelets. It may not be liquid right now but when push comes to shove, I can always sell and convert these to cash.

Even the watches I have, I am converting to Rolexes and Tudors when I can, even 2tones.

Well done OP.

Thanks for all the positive comments.

I think it's all about being supportive of the things in life that make us happy. All of us... I know that I get twinges of the same feeling when I see people "wasting" their money on things like Starbucks (then I go buy some Starbucks stock and I feel better. ). Most of us really enjoy our watches. We are not trying to make a statement or anything. Same with the coffee crowd or $1000 phone crowd or whomever.

I find the idea that my workplace or coworkers would judge me on how I spend what they pay me as counter to the whole idea of working for pay. We should all enjoy our lives as much as we can. It's fleeting.

I agree. Since I started this journey of owning mechanical watches, I learned to remove Starbucks from my daily routine. I also bring lunch to work. That avocado toast reference was so on point. For unknown reason, I don’t feel deprived without my Starbucks coffee. But I am happy of the savings I earned that will go towards purchasing another timepiece that will most likely outlive me.☕️

The average American has only a few thousand dollars in their savings so wearing a watch, such as a submariner, would indicate that you’d have mor $ on your wrist than some do in the bank. So yes, it is a lot

Curious to know what type of "non-profit" you work for. Before I retired, I worked for a for-profit, Fortune 500 company and worn my $550 1675 GMT every day. (from 1976. My wife's wedding present to me). Only two people ever commented to me about it, including one VP. I don't think I would have worn my newer, recent $8K Exp II if I owned it then. It probably would have subliminally affected my boss' attitude toward a raise.

I agree with the point about daily savings/smart frugality making room for big purchases - but to be honest no one is going to go through the mental gymnastics to see a Rolex and think "oh that guy must have been smart in saving Starbucks for awhile". People just don't do the extra work like that when making judgments/forming impressions. The impression will be the impression, regardless of the truth behind it.

I guess in real life there are lots of things to spend money on cars guns and wild women. It can be a real juggling act but the watches seem to win ... lol

I work in Private Banking, and have for too many years. I learned from clients many years ago that the difference between them and the rest of the folks out there was that they generally went the extra mile to succeed and that most spending was not actually a spend, but a transfer of wealth. I tend to look at watches in this way, and I try to follow that ethos.

Totally agree with the choices arguments. My entire collection could be had for the price of some country clubs in the NE USA. I don't belong to any of them, but like my collection. And, on balance, it's worth as much or more than what I paid for it.

Good OP. Obvious when you say it, but it never hurts to state the obvious.

We like nice things in this household. There are lots of expensive undertakings and pass-times which we don't go in for, including many cited by the OP. And a few that we do - which most other people would regard as bonkers. Each to their own.

Issues arise when somebody has to have everything but can't afford it, and/or believes their minimum subsistence level is the sum of their their luxury consumption. Not that it's any of my business. They're not harming me.

I quit smoking after a heart attack. A few things I own, including some very nice watches are a part reward from the money I no longer burn. That and still being alive!

I love how some know how much coffee co-workers drink, how much their houses cost, what hunting property they do or do not own, what options are on their SUV, where they eat lunch, how much they smoke and/or drink and what phone they use but want others to pay no attention to their watches.

People aren't going to change.

Honestly, when I see someone wearing a Rolex, I presume it’s a fake. Rich people think replicas are funny and enjoy fooling people, I’ve found. I don’t presume anything about people wearing Rolex. When I see a guy wearing a gold Rolex, I presume he’s armed. Or has a Napoleon complex, just being honest.

Great believer in if you give 100 people £100 - they’ll spend it a 100 different ways - no rights/ wrongs

That said - for past 30 years apart from the odd 1 or 2 splurges - i’ve Remained pretty focused on my own goals. Nice house/ nice holidays/ motorbikes/ watches. A lot of that’s been achieved through cutting out the stuff that doesn’t matter ie. take out coffees, make own lunches, recycling via eBay, etc .

This...thanks for posting what I was unable to articulate. If we try to justify watches by what we don’t waste money on, then we’re playing (and validating) the same game we hate them playing on us. Wear your watch and forget the naysayers. (and here I sit at church wearing my g-shock because I don’t want to deal with the raised eyebrows and side glances...so forget everything I’ve just said). I need to take my keyboard warrior courage out into the real world and just wear my watch. Thanks for being a part of my intervention.

Writing a post in church? Their judgement must be worse then if you have good taste in watches
