Nothing wrong with having 3 watches. He will love and appreciate the Sub.

Sometimes Rolex WIS assume our children will enjoy a Rolex because we do. That’s not always the case. Don’t force him to keep the Sub Because he may put it away in his sock drawer or, worse, sell it at some ridiculously low price, or trade for the latest iPhone. Get him the Apple Watch and maybe just store the Sub for him until he asks to wear it.

Sometimes when I go diving I wear my Seadweller on the left and my Garmin Descent Dive computer on the right. The Garmin does everything from GPS to pulse during any type of activity so there are functions that are cool and useful but on a regular basis I don't wear it. I always wear a Rolex, Sinn, Grand Seiko, B&M, etc. automatic watch.

I gave my older Son (33yo) a Citizen diving watch that he has worn for over ten years but I think now he does not wear a watch. He just checks his phone instead. And my younger Son (29yo) has never worn a watch, I am pretty sure he just does not care what time it is.

I am ashamed to say I probably wear my apple watch series 4 more than my hulk, expii and laureato all put together. I almost wish they weren’t as good as they are but they are just so bloomin handy.

Damn! I can’t believe it. He’s not a gadget guy but he said he likes the fitness tracking, along with other features that the Apple offers.
He’s still getting the Rolex in May but I’m a little less excited than I was.
Stay tuned for a future thread of the gifting.
I use my Apple Watch 4 every day for the fitness tracking in the gym. It’s also a good once in a while watch to wear. I will wear it to certain meetings when I don’t want a nice mechanical watch on my wrist. They are quite functional as well. Would I choose over my Rolex watches? No of course not but not sure why they can’t coexist together. Either way he is a lucky son to get a Sub as a gift!

Not to question your kind gesture, but when you bought a sub 6 months ago...might have been nice to save it for him.
Giving a kid your watch is a cool gesture, but if you’ve only worn it 6 months, aren’t you kind of just giving home a used watch? Not much in the nostalgia bank after only 6 months.

Apple Watch? It’s a tool watch for me. It’s used for fitness tracking.

The Rolex? It’s something that brings a smile to my face. I enjoy wearing it.

Fitness tracking. As someone who has been a fitness fanatic on and off since the age of 17 can someone please explain?

You put him through high school and law school and this is how he repays you?
Wanting an Apple Watch? I would disown him.

I’m sure that Sub will feel very special to him one day.

Maybe it's a sign. Apple Watch for the son, and Sub for the dad to celebrate the achievement of raising a son that graduated from law school!

I’m sure he’s going to be elated. One doesn’t ask for a Rolex so no sweat that he mentions he would like an Apple Watch. They are very popular just like an iPhone but no replacement for a cool timeless watch

I had an Apple Watch for a few months. I honestly couldn’t stand it. It drove me nuts. Was constantly buzzing or vibrating, alarming, asking me questions or notifying me of what not. I’m a physician and it was incredibly distracting while speaking to patients or doing procedures. I know you can shut all that off but that was annoying to me too. Something to remember to do I didn’t have to worry about before I went to mechanical and never looked back. New to my Rolex collection. Have four references now. And love them all. Few more before my collection is semi complete. Congratulations tocyou and your son that he’s so accomplished academically. Wish him the very best in his new job. He will Alove The sub. I’m sure he doesn’t know it’s in the cards and if he did he’d never have asked you for an Apple Watch. He’ll probably love both and I bet the tenth time his Apple Watch interupts an important client meeting he’ll put it in a drawer. My guess.

Here’s a different take...

An Apple Watch has become as much of a status symbol as a Rolex in most instances. It qualifies as an”expensive” watch for a majority of people and is arguably more recognizable by the average person on the street.

Apple watches are just a temporary fad. As soon as Apple starts to sell devices than can be surgically implanted, nobody is going to want the watch :)

But seriously, I dont know how anyone can wear those things. I wear a Garmin watch when I exercise and golf. I had to turn off all of the notifications on it because it was super annoying. Who wants their wrist buzzing all day?

I enjoy being able to disconnect from technology. I also think it's disrespectful to look at your phone during a meeting or when you are on a date. And I'm a millennial!

If you son really wants an Apple Watch, check out the Hermes Apple Watch. That might be a little more appropriate for his career.

I know plenty of people who love mechanical watches and yet own Apple watch as a fitness tracker that they use for jogging and/or gym. Since you say: "I’ve been wearing it regularly and my son seems to admire it.", I don't think you have anything to worry about. He'll use Apple Watch as a tracker and the Sub as a watch.

This. At this point, the son has no idea the watch his dad is wearing is actually his, so a positive comment about the Apple watch means little.

I had a similar experience with my dad. I had no idea the Air King he bought and wore for several years was actually my watch.

Yeah... I wouldn’t have worn it. I would have just dropped it off in the bank vault and waited for the graduation. It’s for him, not me.

And he’ll definitely wear it if he is starting out at one of the “big law” firms.

I think the apple watch has it's uses but you just cant replace the human emotions stirred with a fancy mechanical piece.
This, I did the same thing, wore my Apple Watch for about a year and then got into mechanical watches and sold the Apple Watch.

Apple Watch is for jogging and tennis/ sub is for business and pleasure. Doesn’t hurt to own something for both occasions

Apple Watch and Rolex aren’t necessarily against eachother
I have my Apple Watch for the gym, and sometimes I wear it on my right wrist while a Rolex almost never leaves my left wrist

From a resale and collectible point of view be aware that any inscription on the watch may affect the watches future value ..that said the watch is obviously a gift from father to son and this show of affection far outweighs a slight drop in any future resale value...great gift .

so why does one thing negate the other ..

can't your son be the kind of person that wears an apple watch for some type of activity and a rolex sub that came off your wrist for others? ..

have your cake and eat it too .. ?

My former boss "retired" his Sub for an Apple watch, He got the Apple watch about 2 years ago and after a couple of months or rotating stopped wearing the Sub. I met him for happy hour last week and he's still wearing the Apple watch but vowed to never get rid of the sub.

As for me: Rolex or Seiko on the left, fitness band on the right.

OP: Excellent gesture. Congrats to your son.
