Manager at my old AD told me he got one watch a year at cost, maybe now things are different.

After chatting to a SA in Place Vendome (Paris) the guy said that despite five years service, he couldn’t get the watch he wanted - BLRO when it came out. Nicest SA I met in France. Sounds like they cop lots of entitlement crap and the old chestnut “do you know who I am?” He admitted that one of his greatest pleasures was selling a piece he felt was going to be worn and treasured. He admits that it is hard to pick that but occasionally buyers talk about the art of flipping with some pride.

I’m told by my AD they get 40% off. They are only allowed to buy one watch.

Somebody on here posted that they are allowed one a year and can't sell it, or something along those lines.

I don't know what the commission rates are, I'm sure it varies by ad, but luxury retail sales associates can do just fine. Sure, salary is probably incrementally above minimum wage but the commission and bonuses are where it's at. $75k to $150k is not unreasonable which is pretty awesome for a job that doesn't require any specific higher education and has zero responsibility the second you step out of the store.

I've been following the same SA wherever he's been since 1997. Met him at the now defunct Tourneau and he then worked at a couple of other stores before winding up where I shop now about five years ago. He's a watch guy through and through and I believe loves his job. I know him well enough to believe he does well there and lives a good lifestyle, glad I know him and consider him my friend.

PS: one of my most hated type of posts here is when someone looks down their nose at AD salespeople. You're not all that just because you have a Rolex. I never look down at anyone over their chosen vocation.

I would imagine it depends on what part of the country or world you live in. Higher cost of living in different areas

The tone of the OP sounded like that was exactly why he was asking.

My SA was gifted a rhodium dial Yacht Master after working at the AD for 20 years. They even let him keep the stickers on it.

Working at a place like Robert C Wesley in Scottsdale would be a blast. Honestly, I would do it for the fun if I had the financial means. You have a constant stream of knowledgeable customers to pass the day away talking to about something you are passionate about. Working for a place like Ben Bridge where you answer 35 calls a day inquiring about getting on a list for “The Bruiser” or “The Hulk” would make me dread every day

I was making a little over 4 times the minimum wage

Back then a Sport Rolex was more of a tool than a ...look at my wrist what I own

Today Rolex sport watches are 90% sold by the grey/black market - thanks to Rolex
Inability to manufacture, supply and distribute correctly and especially
their manipulation of the supply In order to eradicate the grey market..these policies
Have become a boomerang and everyone is laughing at the Rolex management.
Now they have created a Gigantic black market where everyone plays...

Very interesting, thanks for sharing!

its like any sales job, base + commission.

Good salespeople can make some good money. Why/how? Owners take care of their good salespeople. If you have a book of clients and repeat customers who TRUST you....your going to be compensated well.

Mercedes salesman can make 100k a year if they sell the s**t out those cars. And have people who only buy from them.

Interesting - thanks for sharing !

But just want to mention he's not just an average SA. This guy has a social media following and 115k Instagram followers so this amount of volume is probably on the very deep end of the spectrum

Folks at a local AD claim they aren't on commission. They always say come and talk to anyone - doesn't matter who

Not that it compares but in my youth I used to sell high end road bikes and mountain bikes. Tons of fun because I LOVED bikes and getting discounts on gear. I made literally dirt for money and any money I did come away from went into the local beer fund.

If a watch shop / AD were anything like the environment like that I would say it would be an awesome place to work for the love of watches.

I suspect it's basically nothing like that though and it would be in comparison to my hard sales that were tire kickers. Constantly. All day.

I think you should reconsider interesting people as the gross of people owning one are more or less the exact opposite of this. Or are we talking about steve mcqueen?

...or a 'Batchick'

I think that having to deal with the 'sad enthusiast' types would be hard, not that there's a lot to eyeball in ADs these days.

Not the same field but I work in luxury car sales, a sales exec can earn $200k here if he/she is good - around 4 times the average income in Aus for you guys based in the states. That said the range would start at $80k as well...

I can only imagine jewellery sales execs would be the same, top performers working a multi-franchise business would have to be earning mid 100's if not higher... Nobody is going to work suited and booted dealing with customers S*** for $50k a year

As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado.

Anyone wanna see second prize?

Second prize is a set of steak knives.

Third prize is you're fired.
