I think it also reinforces mine too.. strains and vaccines change annually, so why not, as typically the shots are free

20 years. Haven't had the flu since.

Making the vaccine is a guess every year. There is no good way to predict what strains will prevail at the time they need to start manufacturing the vaccine.

I’m not saying it’s a scam. It makes people feel like they are being proactive. But it will be a minor miracle if it actually helps you.

Preventative maintenance is what I think of when I hear anti-vax comments leading up to each flu season.

But the good news is that Xofluza (a “day after” flu shot) can treat flu in people 12 years and older who have had flu symptoms for less than 48 hours.

So if you don’t go the preventative maintenance route, check with your doc to get on the Xofluza waitlist

BTW if you’re over 60 and got the shot early - the CDC and ACIP provided additional information on vaccinating too early:
“Vaccinating early – for example, in July or August – may lead to reduced protection against influenza later in the season, particularly among older adults.”

Never.

Making a flu vaccine is like hitting a rapidly moving target.

Placebo effect at best. Show me a peer reviewed study that proves efficacy and it may change my view.

Otherwise, the preservatives and stabilisers in these vaccines are not something a sane person would willingly inject into their body.

I have not had it this year yet, but will get it. Had it every year for years.

In Iraq they used to stick you coming out the DEFAC at Phoenix, had a little diversion of screens set up at the exit. like a contra flow system. Check your ID, ask if you were allergic to eggs and if not smash. Job done ha.

Well they said it was a flu shot..... Twitch, Twitch

Never had prior but my wife has me getting them lately as we have a 6 month old. I was also pitched it hard by a doctor while in school. He was a smart guy. I don’t see the down side really it doesn’t cost me anything. That said, if my wife doesn’t tell me I should I wouldn’t lol

I get it every year, it's free for me.

I haven't had the chance to ask those that have died from flu after not having the shot if they regret their decision.

We get it every year, since the kids are 10 and 11, they bring home germs from school, we as a family always get them. This year not yet, hopefully next week we find the time for this. My wife needs it as a priority, she has no spleen from her pancreatic tumor in 2011, having no spleen subjects her to a rapid increase in infections, so her oncologists have said to make sure everyone in the house gets the flu shot.

All unvaccinated
I never got one until about 7 years ago. My GF/partner asked me to get it done “for her”. Her motivation? She lost her 9 year old daughter to influenza about 12 years ago. There is no way to know if her daughter would have survived had she been given the shot. Also, neither of us knows if we are getting added protection for ourselves when we get it each year. However, barring any evidence to the contrary, it can’t hurt, so why not.

I will this coming week. I also believe in your right to choose. However, I’m a research type of person and smarter people than I (basically any major health organization) have recommended taking it. Majority of Doctors on this board have said the same. I remember reading a post from John (forgot his username, think he wears ski googles in it) who is a ER doc and has seen way too many people pass from the flu.

I work in the healthcare field in an administrative position, not a physician. I get it every year. I make sure my parents get it as well as pneumonia and shingles vaccine when they’re due.

It’s my understanding you don’t die from influenza, rather from complications due to influenza. A close friend of the family died last year. He was in his mid 70’s. Had the flu, got bad, went to the hospital, never came out.

Regarding “smarter people” in “any major health organization”; Last November, the Director of the CDC (that’s a major one, right?) made this statement: “Too many Americans are harmed by cigarette smoking, which is the nation's leading preventable cause of death and disease." She then vowed to "continue to use proven strategies to help smokers quit and to prevent children from using any tobacco products." ONE MONTH LATER, she invested tens of thousands of dollars in tobacco stocks. She resigned immediately after it was discovered.

If you can’t trust the messenger.....

I’m not sure any of us are in the position to explain or understand people’s financial motivations. Someone may hate iPhones but still believe in Apple stock.

Using CDC as an example, I would think the vast majority of their scientists and Doctors would recommend getting the flu shot.

It's largely an airborne, not a surface contact issue.

Here's a few facts to share:

People with flu can spread it to others up to about 6 feet away. Most experts think that flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

People with flu are most contagious in the first three to four days after their illness begins. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. Children and some people with weakened immune systems may pass the virus for longer than 7 days.

Symptoms can begin about 2 days (but can range from 1 to 4 days) after the virus enters the body. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Some people can be infected with the flu virus but have no symptoms. During this time, those people may still spread the virus to others.

Hey Bas, never too young to get it. I read that doctors recommend getting it as young as 6 months old. I'm sure you're a lot older than six months... Like I say better safe than sorry..
