Day Date for sure. I too am somewhat drawn to the 5205 but between the two the DD is so much more watch. Also, if you’re looking for wrist presence the DD has it and then some.

Patek 5205. Never mind the name, just count the complications.

The Patek is nice but the DD just pops IMO, and I think that I would choose that.

In this case, I would not even blink. Patek.
What a piece, WOW. Never seen this model before. This is the first Patek I really like.
Can you tell me please the reference? Is this a current model?

You’ve listed a piece which is an ultimate grail for me and something I will one day have. That is the Day Date.

There’s just something about it for me. It’s robust (somewhat) and also versatile. As happy at a swimming pool as it is at an expensive restaurant.

Probably the Day-Date to wear daily, you've earned it. I'm not keen on that dial layout of the Patek.

DD rules them all, not to mention the President bracelet.
Easy choice

You have only excellent choices to make! I think you already made a perfect choice: DD over Daytona. Daytona is amazing, but the dial is hard to read—especially with these not-so-young-eyes anymore...
Patek or DD?
I would choose the DD. The history with the DD is so striking. And for me: the DD is the Rolex. So comfortable, reliable, easy to wear with a tuxedo or swimming suit.
I was almost about to buy a Patek but I think the reason for me was the elite hype around Patek. Many models are just too small for me. Maby the pilot model would be the one Patek for me. But the only problem is that Patek is not a Rolex.
This is a great DD video:

Hi OP,
The equivalent patek to a rolex dd is a 5711/1r if you like a more sporty look or 5277r if you like a dress watch feel:

I’d go for Patek if you’re considering the above

Current collection: Rolex Datejust 41, Rolex Submariner 116610LV

I was in a similar situation earlier this year, deciding between a 5146j or DD40. I went with the DD, my first PM watch I wanted full gold and to feel the heft. I also mostly wear casual clothes. Having said that one day I will add a PP, you just have to imo

DD40 imho for daily wear, durability, and a classic style that has endured not just today's fashion and rapper / hip-hop fad, as Rolex's DD has many decades of provenance.

If you truly want very high quality and exclusivity like us longtime collectors, then imho you want to wear a fine timepiece produced in very limited production by F.P Journe. Another important factor is to ask about service times of other brands and compare them to Rolex / FPJ.

Am sure with reading and education you'll learn FPJ ranks over other perceived high-end brands. Many lux watch collectors know FPJ is the real deal. Of course a Rolex is solid build quality and reliability even during daily use (and dare we say abuse). Rolex timepieces are very rugged.

DD is a sports watch really in precious metal, pretending to be a dress watch.

Patek is a complicated, haute horology dress piece. It's not something you'd wear everyday or to the beach.

If you have a collection of other watches, that maybe isn't an issue.

Personally I try on both, one should sing to you, if neither does leave them in the store lol

I would say go for the 5205. That blue gradient dial looks so much better in person. It is a good choice as an entry into Patek.

Hard choice. As others have said, depends on your daily life style. If you are not going to get your hands dirty, I would go with the P. Otherwise, R.

Do NOT buy the 5205G...I own exactly that one. Get the 228235. You will have NO regrets with that watch. It can go with a suit, it can go with a pair of shorts and flip flops, and it can go with jeans. Super versatile watch.

Unlike what others have said. The blue in 5205G only comes through under a ton of sunlight or artificial light. It's dark most of the time. I bought it without seeing it, expecting it to have this popping blue colour and when I got it, it was short of happiness.

Both are very nice watches but the Rolex DD can be worn everyday, casual or dress and never miss a beat. PP makes some great watches but no one does it better in PM than Rolex with a full metal bracelet. Then add in price and Rolex seems like a bargain. As mentioned earlier you can get a PP later if you desire but for this choice it would be the Rolex DD.
