I don't think that during the SARS outbreak Baselworld was cancelled. Like I said a month ago on this forum (and was flamed for saying) this virus is incredibly bad news for the luxury watch industry. Also for the world economy.

Who cares? Rolex can't even produce the models they have already put out. Maybe they can play catch up.

Not too many humanitarians here, more people concerned about a show and new watch releases. Really show how shallow people are. What a shame.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Although none of us know what will be going on behind closed doors, it's reasonable to assume that Rolex (and other brands for that matter) would have any 'new release' models under production.

Following Swatch Group pulling out of Basel, if a digital launch is chosen and deemed a success by other brands, does it signal the end for Basel...

If there is a danger of the spread of an infectious diseases, then cancellation is the proper course of action. Gatherings, especially of people from many countries, can really spread a virus. We've gotten some bad colds from just what my Grandson brings home from kindergarten.

Which is why Rolex should make an announcement so that we do not have to read 400 what is going to happen questions

I believe it is a watch forum so people will naturally discuss the potential pandemic’s impact on the industry.

If you logged onto a motorsports forum, they would be discussing whether Australian GP will be affected, or even Le Mans.

The financial boards are discussing this, too.

Wish people who make judgmental comments wouldn’t project their bias as if others don’t care about the root cause.

I agree, and am not surprised by this course of action. I'm a middle aged Dad with a toddler is preschool... he brings us virus gifts home all the time.

Agree with others. One more nail in the coffin for Baselworld.

This sucks. I feel for the bloggers and YouTubers who go and produce good content on their experiences at Basel world. Always looked forward to those.

Wow, this is incredibly interesting. How will this all pan out? Will the brands still launch their new products, or now wait until January 2021 to show their new models? I imagine they have product already manufactured ready for allocation, forecasts to hit that include incorporating newness into their sales. I could care less, not like I'm going to get any new rolex that comes out anyway, just wondering how this will all pan out.

Do you really need an announcement to understand why? The reason is clear as day.

Just reading the comments about the concerns of postponing the show to a further date tells you people aren't concerned about the root cause.

You can’t read minds - and frankly you’re coming across as supercilious.

But that’s your prerogative...

I really don't mean to come across as being prerogative, at all. And clearly I'm not trying to read minds, I'm reading posts which say it all.

Bummer. I wonder what effect this will have on the industry. I imagine the bigger players will be fine but what effect will it have on smaller brands and independents?

Let me clarify, it would show that Rolex cares about the situation by making an announcement. And I hope they are reading this and take my advice.

The Rolex silent treatment should not apply to this situation, this is not business as usual

a) i think the fear over this coronavirus is ridiculous.
b) rolex will probably quietly release watches without fanfare. my favorite release of last year - the meteorite dial daydate - wasn’t shouted about by anyone.
c) i think the fear over this coronavirus is ridiculous.

fear is the mindkiller.

We have really reached a strange time when a manufacturer of high end luxury jewelry is being expected to talk about new products in light of what is happening in the world.
