Been there, sold 4 Rolex, bought an Omega and an IWC, did some resto work on a Tudor, and was still somewhat bored. Looked at GP, JLC, BP (there are some screaming deals out there on FF's now), and came back to Rolex & IWC.

I will probably pick up another ND Sub or SD, to have as a compadre to my LV, but if I had to do it over, I would probably get one white dial (Exp II), and one black dial (probably a SD), and then head to other brands.

Somebody said it before...it's just a watch. I bought my first Rolex as a present to myself for attaining a major milestone in my career. That watch made it 15 months with me only wearing it less than 20 times. Turns out, for me at least, it was/is just a watch. Head out to other brands now, as they are some screaming deals to be had.

IWC has some really nice watches out now, especially the ones that use the 80111 & 80110 caliber movements. The rate results are excellent, the finish of the movement is really nice, and the watches are very visually striking. The bracelet on the 3227 Ingenieur is a work of art!!! Plus, understated is the rule with some of the IWC's, as most people look at them and think, "International Watch Company".....that comes from Fossil, right? In my opinion, many of them are the epitome of flying under the radar.

Anywho...good luck w/ the search.

I love my Rolex. Yes, it's a great timepiece, and looks great, but part of its appeal is that it's a Rolex. People know what it is. While that may not be important to some, it is a factor for me.

BTW many people think that just because people don't comment on our Rolexes, that people don't notice. Believe me, many people do. Do you comment on each and every Rolex you see? I see one almost every day (two others today, in fact), but don't comment on them. Recently I had a professional encounter with a man wearing a gold Daytona. The context wasn't appropriate for a comment at all. What to say? "Cool watch. Use the chrono features for anything recently?" Perhaps he went home thinking that no one noticed his gold Daytona, but I assure you that's not the case.

The problem with you British is that you are so damn British.

Snap out of it man. Go get soused, eat some fish and chips, grab a bum on the street for excitement and, call me in the morning from jail.

Just last week I read the comments from Clarkson in The Times and whilst he is mostly comes across a boorish bigot, I'm beginning to agree with him on his opinions of Rolex.

I'm sick of all the BS that comes with owning a Rolex. I'm sick of the stereotypes.

Add to this, the lastest rubbish that's come out at Basel and this big watch/dj are for women garbage and I'm thinking I want out.

I'd never ditch the 57 OD (it's still at the watchmakers) but I've been thinking about losing the LV for something a little different.

I would love a BP FF but I don't think funds are available for that now even with the sale or trade of the LV.

Perhaps that's the problem, being able to afford a luxury watch?

I look at stuff that needs doing to the house and I think I'd be better off both financially and within my soul, if I ditched the expensive watches and just got on with my life.

I understand what you are saying. But, it sounds like you are letting others perception mold your way of thinking. Stereotypes are only valid if you play into them.

You noticed it 'cuz you're a WIS. Most people aren't. Most people don't notice. Since this came up on another watch forum, I've started running an informal survey of people I know on a casual basis but see regularly (the cashier at the grocery store where I shop, my mailman, clients, etc). So far I've asked three people if I wear a watch (keeping my left arm out of sight). One said no. One said he didn't know. One said no, thought about it a moment and then said maybe.

When I told them I did, in fact, wear one, and asked them what brand (making no attempt at this point to hide my watch), two said they had no idea, one of whom laughed and said he knew nothing about watches and wouldn't even recognize a Rolex if he saw one. I had to agree with him (silently) since he was looking at one at that moment and didn't realize it. The third guessed Seiko.

In the year plus I've had it, two people have recognized and commented on my watch. Both were watch salesmen.

Non-WIS people around here neither notice nor care what watch you wear. I'm willing to admit it might be different in other geographical areas. I can only speak for my town. There just doesn't seem to be this whole Rolex stigma thing here.

Jeannie, I would have to agree most people do not care what kind of watch others wear. But wear revealing clothing and everyone is aware!!!

Wouldn't buy an IWC unless it had cal.8000- haven't looked into 5000, but I'm sure its nice too- others are just too generic with the ETAs.
The PAM movements I've looked at turned me off... I'm not familiar with their whole line, so please, feel free to enlighten me.... but to my limited knowledge many of their pieces utilize movements that may be found in pieces costing under $1500; with engraving colored screws. To me a little finishing isn't worth the $4k premium. I know a few use the Harwood, which I'm sure if great as it was the first automatic movement... I just don't like the idea of outsourcing the main component of the piece.

I couldn't buy a watch without in-house movement. Ha, I really wanted a Portuguese chrono till I found out they run off Valjoux 7750.

yeah, i'm a little tired myself - rolex is a good watch, but it's not the be-all-end-all of horology that some folks make it out to be. i'm glad i chose one for a daily wearer, but 1 is definitely enough for me. if i do get another watch, and i absolutely don't need one, it will be something off of the beaten path.

Jim,

Its a fact of life, there will always be things that need to be done around the house. If you sell your Rolex to fund other projects, the hunger will come back and you will probably regret selling it - This is what happened to me.

Tired of Rolex? No, not at all. I enjoy other brands from time to time but seem to always be glad to strap a Rolex Oyster to my wrist.

As to another Rolex....not right now and likely not for a long time, if ever.

As to pride in ownership....I'm glad to own one based on where they have been but not sure where they are going.......I'll live in the past if I must.
