Porsche & Rolex. Good luck with getting a discount.

Good points

I'm going to cheat.

Lexus/Mercedes for the DJ/DD lines. Porsche for the sports line.

Which I suppose makes the Skydweller maybe like a Panamera.

Sort of Porsche.

Like Porsche that you can get whatever you want if you spend egregious sums of money on them over the years, but at the same time that doesn't guarantee you preferential treatment.

Not really like Porsche that you can't customize your watch no matter how stupid or garish the end result looks.

NOT a Mercedes or any other German car. Please. There's a reason why the best advice is to lease a German car or sell it right before the warranty expires.

It's a Lexus. It's made by Toyota. It's extremely reliable, it's well made and it's attractive.
Its tricky because vintage German cars are relatively reliable and they can run for a million miles with proper maintenance. Modern German cars are built to last 36,000 miles :)

LOL...EVERYONE on this thread cracks me up.

Please see OP's #3: "...maintenance is not wildly expensive."

A Ferarri? A Porsche? An Astin Martin? What world do you people live in?

NONE of the German cars or European cars have reasonable maintenance. I admit some of the older models had somewhat reasonable maintenance if you were best friends with a mechanic and knew how to get cheap european parts. But even the newer models are POS if you ask me because you can't even diagnose now without a computer.

The only cars that come close is LEXUS but they don't have quite the history and panache that the German brands have.

One of the things that sets Porsche aside from the others is reliability is generally good and maintenance isn't that bad (as far as expensive cars go). I have a 911 and a Macan, the service cost is admittedly slightly more than it was when I was with Lexus but its certainly not in an entirely different ballpark. I just use the dealer, could save more with an independent mechanic which you can find to work on Porsches, even modern ones.

I think we have to ignore OP's #3, because Rolex service IS expensive. I'd change #3 to this: most of their models have a very similar case profile because that works for their clientele.

Going with that, Rolex seems like Porsche, in all the good ways.

True.

German cars today are SOOOOOOO over rated. Buy or lease a Japanese car. No regrets for me anyways. Don't miss my Audi for one minute.

Land Rover Defender, just keeps on running doing the job it was built for. Also a design icon, often copied but never equalled.

The LADA Niva. It's been around for 43 years now. Just recently got an airbag system; prior airbag was the driver's face. Look at those classic beveled edges and polished hub caps.

Maybe Honda and Toyota/ Lexus are like quartz watches. The expectation is that maintenance will be very cheap.

I think Mercedes and Porsche are relatively affordable to maintain if you compare against other brands who produce $100k+ cars.

Isn't Rolex cheaper to maintain than AP/ PP??

Actually the Lexus is hideous. How this got approved by the board is beyond me. Identifying this mess with a Rolex is an insult to Rolex.

I like Porsche, and would love to eventually own one - though I feel the market Porsche appeals to is quite specific. I think Mercedes is closer comparatively due to it's greater appeal and mass market audience. Mercedes also king of marketing with the F1 over the last few years...

Mercedes much like Rolex has evolutionary designs, well made, mechanically innovative, low maintenance, built to last a lifetime or two if properly looked after. The Porsche comparison is a valid comparison to Rolex safe queens, Porsche’s are garage queens. Most resale Porsche’s I have seen have very low mileage, must be a reason.

in someways rolex is more akin to ferrari... like rolex the hardest to get ferrari models are often the mid tier models(ie mid engine V8). Obtaining a high end (day date, full PM) piece or V12 grand tourer can be easier relative to the mid tier “sports” models. And both have plenty of unobtanium for the true enthusiasts. Also both are difficult for those without “relationships” to acquire.
