A flagship is some combination of first, best, and/or most recognizable.

The SkyD is none of these.

Flagship - to my mind the watch or watches that is the most expensive in the makers range. In this case the Day-Date is that watch. In addition it is one of the few watches in the range that is made totally in precious metal.

Quintessential Rolex - DateJust, it is 75 years young this year?

But, you're right my perception of Rolex is dependant on where I am coming from, some of us like the style of the DJ and similar whilst others like the Submariner style, neither is right or wrong, just personal choice.

If I could only have one Rolex, it would be the DayDate. I have a 218238, and thinking about a 228238.

The Day-Date is the epitome of luxury and function all in one. It is a solid gold watch that can be worn on a daily basis and even function in a sports setting.

Day-Date is the king. The Submariner is more akin to the heralded loyal knight in the king's court.

Marketing is the answer.

Not that it isn't a great looking watch...

If you really wanted to argue what watch is the most important, that is the lowly Oyster Perpetual. Without that watch, none of the others would exist.

It was the first watch to show the date and day through a window automatically.

With Rolex you wear history.

This is up for interpretation.

I consider the flagship as the most expensive model. The Day Date maybe was 30 years ago....but it's not close now.

I feel the Skydweller is the flagship there....$50k MSRP (I'm only talking PM models...not ones with diamonds, etc.).

I get presidents, etc. wore it....but Rolex only had a few models back then. Presidents can go ahead and drive the E-class but it's never going to be the flagship of Mercedes. That being said, it's the only model that only comes in PM and not SS....so you could consider that as a reason for arguing for it being the flagship.

DD40 doesn't do it for me....looks like a DJ. Just my 0.02. I think dress watches in general never have done it for me.

The entry model to one of a company's product lines is rarely considered a "flagship."

Why?

From a logical standpoint, I cannot say, from an emotional perspective, I can say....

It's the aspirational watch for me. I wanted a gold tone Seiko "Datejust" like my dad wore back in the 70's. Well, at the age of 16 I got one. It was my dream watch and I still have it and treasure it like no other. But, my dad informed me that a DD Rolex was the ultimate dream watch. And, once I knew that, I noticed that there were three types of men. The first were dudes who dreamed of a DD but either faked it and wore a similar styled watch or an outright fake, the second were the guys that had "made it" and sported a real DD, and the third, and ones I most admired, the guys who either had one and rarely wore it or didn't have one but everyone knew they could easily have one or a dozen if they wanted to.

Fast forward to 40 or so years later, and I have a 228238 that I wear occasionally.....

I think it is the Flagship and what most people think of as the epitome of a luxury watch. Every Rolex fan should own one at some point, I'm glad I did.

I agree that the DD is considered the "flagship" watch within Rolex. It is an aspirational watch for many and a prized possession for those who own one.

Historically Rolex has not been known for complicated watches. So although the SkyDweller has a nice complication with the AC, it is more of a niche market watch and doesn't attract as wide an interest as the DD.

For a complicated watch brand, you would look towards something like Patek Philippe, whose flagship watch would be a perpetual calendar chronograph.

The word "President" also refers to the top suites at hotels. Presidential...
That Rolex is the big cheese, top dog, as far as I am concerned. It's definitely a watch I would like to acquire in the future.

I have to be honest it is a watch that I would very much like to own, but it is a tad pricey.
