The watch stand is a must, i used to lay them on micro fiber cloth. This is much easier and less thought involved.

Rest it in its own personal position to maximize accuracy. Even in a winder you have 4 positions to choose from.

I had this dilemma too so decided to design a 3D printable watch stand. Now my watch is secure by my bed and not going to get scratched.

Lots of great suggestions here.
I use the following rules and I’m fully aware that they make no sense whatsoever :)

Oyster bracelet, I either sleep with the watch on or sometimes place it on my nightstand dial up
Jubilee bracelet, nightstand dial up
Leather strap, in my watch box or on rare lazy occasions on my night stand face up. There is a reason for this, one of my dogs have gotten the taste of leather straps... it has cost me an IWC strap - somehow the watch head itself seemed somewhat unharmed (it is a beater anyway)

I’ve actually asked my dealer this question before. If you’re looking to just take off your watch and leave it on a counter top, the preferred way is to rest it on the crown side. This allows for the least amount of watch real estate to be exposed to the surface that it’s resting on, and therefore, prevent less noticeable scuffing. It also keeps the watch in the same position as if one was wearing it on their left wrist, while in an upright position, with their arms parallel to their body. This position also prevents the caseback from rubbing against the inside of a bracelet. For these reasons, this is how a dealer presents a watch to you.

I do for sure! I wear mine occasionally and when i wake up I’ve had scratches on my face. I don’t know what happens at night but it’s not great for my face.

I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted so I modified one of these Apple Watch stands, https://www.containerstore.com/s/app...=apple%20watch

I cut a piece of styrofoam into a wedge shape, pulled out the stand from the base and placed it in a way to lessen the tilt in the stand. It was too steep to hold a watch properly without it. Then cut up a old microfiber cloth and wrapped it around the top. The hole in the stand is perfect for case backs to sit in so there’s no sliding around.

As to it's functioning, physics play a role. On it's back or face, there is less friction on the pivots than there would be laying on it's side. Also, on one side the balance will work harder to "tick" than it does laying on the other side.

Tuck it in for the night however you want..... it will still be like that in the morning.
