I just assume she is on a Rolex forum she is at least considering Rolex.

well first off, good on you, and lucky him, i like you already.

i'd say something in gold, and on leather. a classy dress watch.
depending on your budget you can go Omega, JLC, or up to Patek Calatrava

She said he doesn’t like gold and likes subs, plus she is on a Rolex forum. He has a nice collection but think he is looking for his first rolex, and budget around 8k.

I think the Oyster Perpetual is worthy of consideration. Should fall within your budget, it is a simple, timeless watch, quite versatile, and is available in a 39mm case, a very wearable size. No date feature, but such clean lines. A classic. And, at the same time, a typically rugged Rolex.

I think, too, it may be more readily available in the current market then sports models like the Submariner. Have a look at the Rolex website and see what dial colors appeal to you.

And yes, I said what colors appeal to you...while you want to choose something he will like, of course, part of what makes a gift like this so special, I think, is what the giver brings to the selection...

Sometimes we receive gifts that we might never have thought to pick out for ourselves, but when someone close to us, someone who knows us very well, and perhaps sees in that gift something in us or about us that we might not...it makes for a unique present.

It's not simply a watch he will like. He could buy that himself. It's a watch he will treasure because you chose it...because it represents something about him, something that you see in him, that you treasure about him.

So, follow you own intuition. If you are luke warm on a given model, pass it by. When you see a watch that says to you, "THAT's HIM"...and you feel a sudden lift from that thought and feeling...grab it.

Last thought...enjoy the process. I'm sure you will choose the right one.

Get him a steel Daytona. Walk into a Rolex AD and pretend you know nothing about the hype and demand...

I like the silver fluted jubilee date just. Sub is great too. Both are a little more than 7-8 but not that much. White dial OP or explorer 1 would also work. Rolex is probably the best buying new. I also liked the zenith a384 used of course... JLC reverso great opportunity to engrave something... I also like the omega ploprofs.

Agree with this. He needs some color in that collection.

Tudor S&G Chronograph on Bund Strap. So much watch that fits your budget. Has great Rolex breeding. Totally a sophisticated watch for a young man or woman...good luck!

If you don't mind to share his age?
IMO, age is one of the factor too to choose a watch.

After hearing your budget, looking at other comments, I think a blue datejust 41, smooth bezel, either jubilee or oyster, which ever they have. Got the datejust, got color, within budget, and the smooth bezel is pretty versatile. Reference number is 126300. $7650. https://www.rolex.com/watches/dateju...6300-0001.html

Seems like he wants a watch that stands out from the crowd and airs on the side of bigger watches, so I would say 39 is an absolute minimum.

Submariners are great, but everybody has one. And special ones don't fit in your budget.

Next we go DJ, I love my DJ41, and it is one option you should consider. 126300 with smooth bezel could fit in your budget. However I would look at another watch as to me it seems like he wants a sporty watch that flies under the radar yet isn't too common.

I would suggest Explorer II. You can find a 16570 or maybe even a newer 216570 in your budget. Black or white dial. I prefer white, but based on his other watches, I'd probably go for black 216570.

Another watch that fits the bill is Yachtmaster 16622. It shares many features with a Submariner but is definitely it's own watch. It's sporty, yet not common and slightly unusual.

Final curveball, 116400GV Z-Blue Milgauss. It is not common, but not under the radar as it calls a bit of attention to itself with all the colors.

If he were me (or I were him or whatever), I’d want you to know EXACTLY what I wanted. Anything that I didn’t want would not be loved as much as what I really wanted. So I’d suggest subtly finding out from him or a friend what he actually wants.

Aside from that, it seems he is not a Rolex fan (regardless of the question being on this forum), so maybe a Grand Seiko snowflake or something.

If it were me though, I’d add some color. If GMT or Hulk weren’t too hyped, those would be a good fit. If a Yacht Master wasn’t too blingy for him, a used 16622 might be a good fit too.

Help me pick a watch for my husband

Tudor Black Bay GMT would be a good one. Haven’t followed the thread though.

Btw, nice of you!

If he has been eyeballing Submariners, no date subs can be had from the greys slightly above 8k fairly easily. You said it, just sayin.

He isn’t really a two-tone kind of guy so I don’t think his and hers will work here. I LOVE the blue dial datejust and think the silver or white would be nice too.

For his first Rolex around 8k I would opt for the explorer ll or a submariner. I think you can find all 3 around 8k from a TS on the forums. The explorer ll is a 42mm watch. It wears really nicely. The sub is a 40mm watch. Looking at his collection he can pull off any of the 3. The polar explorer ll is a favorite on the forums if he needs a date.

Sub no date or DJ blue then, can't go wrong with them

Good recommendation. She could also get it with the blue dial, which she mentioned she liked regarding the DJ.

Maybe a 39mm White dial OP. The dial is a egg shell matte. Very understated watch, what I love about is. It doesn’t attract attention.

7-8 k is an odd number in the luxury watch market. Do you want to buy new or pre-own. For 8k, a sub no date would be a great choice, is is probably the most iconic watch and design from Rolex, it is perfection and a classic. It was Steve McQueen everyday watch, Sean Connery wore one while playing James Bond you can’t go wrong. And at tha price , you can either get a new one and a vintage one. Another brand that’s very popular is Tudor’s Rolex sister company, the Blue Black Bay 58 is pretty popular right now. Cheers.

I'd go with the DJ41 black, with jubilee bracelet, a great all-rounder in my opinion.

Personally, can't go wrong with a 116500LN Daytona. Kind of hard to get though if trying to purchase brand new. Maybe a TAG Monaco Calibre 12? Beautiful piece. Quite chunky though.
