If I was absolutely dead set on a Daytona and refused to pay grey I’d rather buy my wife a watch and maybe another something for me that I really liked if I thought it would help.

But no, absolutely no chance would I buy something I didn’t want. I think you’d be looking at something gold anyways to get a Daytona. Or at minimum 3 or 4 other pieces. I don’t think it’s worth the effort.

Wow - that acronym really rolls off the tongue!

ps if the two for one, then flip or keep was a good and easy option that works it would be universally used.

That’s a silly methodology

Best of luck just to get on a list because getting a DJ41 will only get you that ..... maybe

And you may still never get the call even if you rinse repeat 3-4 more times

Only bundle, don't settle for likely false promises with moving goal posts in the current environment.

Also, at the current silly secondary prices, I wouldn't hesitate to dabble my feet into other brands like AP or FPJ.

None of the current Rolex SS offerings interest me enough to do this. I also won’t pay over list to greys for any of the “hot” SS pieces.

I’m satisfied with what I have from Rolex.

I wouldn't but it's a choice some make. The way I see it is we've already worked for the money to buy these items. Why work more just to make a retail transaction? These dealers are taking advantage of the supply situation by offloading hard to sell or high cost/high profit items to those who just want a watch.

Imagine a watch shop with a large tip jar. The employee says I might be able to sell you the watch you want but you're going to have to start filling the tip jar until we say it's good enough. Then we will sell you the watch. No thanks.

Be patient. The market dynamics will change in due time. If you require instant gratification, pay a premium at a grey...right now, the name of the game is patience.

I was dead set on a Blue SkyD, especially after i got the TT White SkyD, i wanted one without the gold. I had been on the list for a year for the blue SS.

Then on my 20th wedding anniversary this year i bought 2 YG president watches from my AD, 1 lady’s and 1 DD40 for myself. A week later I received a call from my AD that my Blue SkyD was ready and another 2 weeks later I got a BLRO...

There's far more to life than just Rolex.
That's the problem with these doods...

It's just about the one watch. SS Daytona, Pepsi, Hulk..etc

Everything else is "Not Hot" and they don't want it.

So, since they won't organically purchase watches to build a relationship with the AD, we get situations like this...

I'd advise against that strategy. Arbitrage assumes some semblance of control, but buyers in this market have very little. You'd very likely purchase the piece they want you to purchase and be waiting indefinitely for the piece you want to purchase. Also, if you're caught buying and immediately selling a watch, you would damage your relationship with the AD and the AD's relationship with Rolex, if that's a concern.

If you do plan to go this route, I would at least ask that both pieces be sold at the same time.

Just curious if there is an arbitrage opportunity:

Gray has Hulk for 16k for example

A) buy a non-hot model from AD for some amount, sell it at a loss of 2k
B) get a hot model from AD at retail

So technically just pay a 2k premium (for example) instead of supporting grays.

Obviously the maximum loss I would want to take is the difference in price from gray prices and retail price

Anyway, what are some good candidates for models I can purchase (that is good enough for me to get on a list) but still have some resale value that would limit my loss?
You do realize that gray you don’t want to support is doing exactly what you describe as your alternative, before selling you the Hulk... they don’t get these hot watches from the ADs for no reason. So you’d really be competing with the gray rather than avoiding him... and since that gray has done what you describe pretty often, the „tariff“ to get into that game would hardly be at one unwanted watch...

I wanted a Sub, wasn’t able to get one as I had no purchase history so I moved on to my second choice and got a Seamaster. We can’t always have our number one choice. Sometimes circumstance dictates our options and we just have to play the cards we have available.

I have since bought an Explorer from them without being on any list. I might get a sub, I might not. At least I have some great watches to enjoy in the meantime.

I suppose what I’m trying to say is just because you can’t buy your first choice why not just buy your second?

People who say that you have to purchase a watch that you don’t want to get on a waitlist for a watch you do is the false narrative that grey buyers use as justification to countenance paying grey prices.

You can get any watch with waiting or simple relationship building. It doesn’t take kissing ass or anything of the sort.

And the “time is money” platitude is silly too. What does that even mean in the context of looking for a watch? All just justifications for unwise financial decisions.

If you want a hot piece, build a relationship, get on a list, check in with your ad. Have some patience. The search is the fun part!

This. In fact, they will arbitrage you for nearly double that difference. That's why so many TRFers recommend saving yourself a lot of time and money and just go gray. Too many other things in life to spend your time on. One AD tried pulling that crap with me. In order to get a BLRO, not only was I required to buy a PM piece retailing for at least $30K, it had to be one of the slowest moving models. I told them flat out I was better off buying on the gray market.

X2. This is more of how much you respect your self over a piece of jewelry. AD games or the need to prove yourself to them is also off the table. For goodness sakes it’s “retail sales” of a factory made product they make a million of a year.

I don’t do it for cars or houses and I certainly won’t do it for a watch. In the spirit of buying a luxury product, I’ll buy what I want, when I want it on my terms. Watches are not “investments” nor are they a item anybody needs. If I have to pay a fraction more to maintain my integrity, then so be it. YRMV.

If you go grey, you will get what you want now and guaranteed.
If you buy one non-PM watch from an AD, chances are your wait for the Hulk will be infinite, even if they say that they put you on the list.
It's impossible to outplay this market, everything is priced in in the greys' prices.

None. If I'm that desperate I will go grey. More likely I will just forget it.

I have bought a SS black Sky Dweller and a Hulk grey because I couldn't get listed anywhere. All our other Rolex watches have come from the same AD, plus a few other brands besides. The relationship has developed to a point where I will be able to get a BLRO from them if I am prepared to wait. Which I am.

So far as I can tell, my AD doesn't BS about lists. It may not be something as simple as a list of names in date order, but some kind of wait and allocation model operates. If they say they will get a watch for me, they get it - eventually. If I know I'm in the system I'm happy to wait my turn.

My next Rolex incoming will likely take a relatively long time. There are a couple of other watches that I wouldn't mind in the collection which will keep me occupied and happy in the interim. Not to mention the beautiful collection that my wife and I are fortunate to already own.

Lmao, it's apparently clear in 2020 that Rolex watches are literally an addictive drug, and has some serious addicts willing to do anything. Soon enough there will be a thread about selling grandma's tv to fund a purchase.

I love Rolex and it's my favorite brand, but no matter how much I love the brand I will not pay thousands over retail and most importantly I just don't believe that as an example, a Daytona or BLRO are worth their market value.
I sure as hell wouldn't buy something I didn't want, that's bonkers.

Edit: I would like to say that if a person has the ability to buy at a premium second hand, I don't have an issue with that, I just cannot do it myself.

Why buy if you don’t want makes no nonsense.

The story of the AD and building a relationship is tired now as everyone tries to do that, be nice, tall watches, but a watch for friend , bring on a list, etc etc.

There are no lists , either they like you and remember you or don’t. They know if you are serious, or not.

Just buy grey If so desperate and then hope you like it.

But if I were most everyone one good SS tool and a DD is enough to be happy and then buy other brands that are easier. And forget PP, it’s they same exact story.

Best
