well, you keep the pepsi untouched for so long so apparently you never plan to wear it but want to cash out the profits someday so here is another chance to do that. $ wise it is about fair, especially when you are dealing with an AD.

If it were me I wouldn't, as the daytona white is still in production tho hard to get at retail. But I wouldn't keep that Pepsi sticker on for that long either:-)

No way, a discontinued NOS classic for a current model. Just look at the rows of 116500s in the dealers of Tokyo. In 10, 20 years your GMT will likely get you a Platona.

Yes, DavidSW is asking just under $27,000 for a NIB white dial, but for the OP to risk getting an equal value why do anything? He has a $25K watch, keeps his $2500, and has $27,500. DavidSW or another Gray isn’t going to buy it from him for $27K, he’s lucky to get $20K or $21K. So he has to spend the time, energy to find a buyer at $27,000, not easy.

If he’s not wearing the GMT, which he isn’t, this is purely a financial decision. If he plans to wear the Daytona it’s an even worse deal for him.

I’d put more appreciation potential, long term, behind a discontinued watch than a still in production one. But then I think it’s absurd to pay 2x MSRP for a watch still being made.

OP - why not just buy the Daytona outright? Is it an option for you only with the trade in? - Meaning: will the AD sell to someone else if you don’t do the trade?

I think the AD is contributing $2500 cash towards the OP, not the other way around. Also depends on how much the OP bought the GMT for.

If you do it and don’t plan on wearing Daytona...make this a stipulation of trade

Serious question.

Do you actually like Rolex watches...or are you just speculating on another purchase to put in the safe? No wrong answer, just wondering.

And what was the thinking on the stick dial? It took a while for that dial to be given the air of rarity it received.

My crystal ball stinks. I would love some insights from someone who picked a great model to sock away.

I read it differently, ‘Daytona in exchange for GMT and cash’. But it isn’t entirely clear.

Yeah, what the OP bought the GMT for is relevant, But no way to know. I’m just referring to overall values.

From the pure watch enthusiast perspective (which is the only one I operate in), I probably wouldn’t...but I love GMTs and 5-digits in general. The GMT is more interesting to me than a new, albeit very lovely and desirable Daytona. They’re not making any more of your GMTs, but the factory continues produce the new Daytona.

However, like others have mentioned, this is more of a financial question. For that, I defer to the wisdom of those who have done the math!

A quick search shows me one going for $23k... I wouldn't do it. Honestly, I wouldn't do any trade an AD offered. They wouldn't try, unless it was to make money on you.

Easy solution: sell me your GMT, buy the Daytona. Let someone who really appreciates a piece like this, and a loyal TRF member, wear it with pride.

If the GMT is how you describe, there is no way I'd trade it for a new Daytona.
How many NOS 3186 GMT's are out there?
How many new white faced Daytonas?
Wait they are still making Daytonas.

Your problem is your AD now wants the GMT and you probably will never be able to purchase a Daytona from them at MSRP.

I would say the GMT is a vintage collector piece. I'm a Daytona fan but don't think it will ever be a collectors item .

No way. I bet you could get close to 30k for it now and 2x that in twenty years. Put it up for 25k today and it will be gone in minutes. AD knows this.

Initially I thought "yeah get the Daytona" buuut that GMT isn't made anymore. That GMT is a rare bird and far less common than the Daytona. I think that GMT is worth hanging on to. The Daytona is wonderful but still being mass produced. Keep the GMT and keep it pristine (coming from a guy that generally hates safe queens...)

I would. The premium for the 3186 is overrated (in my opinion). The premium for the white dial Daytona is not.

Should I make the trade

When I was looking for a GMT Pepsi in 2007, It took a little time to find one. When the AD called with the good news I left immediately left to pick it up. When I got there the AD told me that he was holding one for another customer but the customer changed his mind and went with a different watch. I had waited several months for my watch and so I asked if the other one was also for sale. When he said yes, It probably didn't take me longer than a few minutes and told him I would take both of them. I have worn one of the watches and stuck the other one in the safe. The watch is such a classic and seems to get better as time goes by. I have a 2002 Bluesy, a beautiful watch but the GMT gets most of the wrist time.

Keep the GMT, you'll be able to get your hands on the Daytona eventually.

Thanks for your input, I especially liked the one that asked if I was drunk. I am not going to accept this offer and will let him make a counter offer. If the AD and I can't find some common ground, I am going to put the watch for sale on the Forum.
