Okay so this took a weird turn! I did not include the 1055 in the original question to the forum as I believed those to be sold out. The 683 was/is lovely but the movement was bothering me. I was really wishing the 1055, with in house movement, was available. So I reached out to Panerai USA and after a few days they told me they were getting the final 1055s in during the August/September time frame. So, I scooped it up. Should have the watch in a month or two!

But, the 1661 is still not dead to me. The Boutique won't be getting one until next January, but I may add it as well. I figure a 42mm Sub in khaki green, and a 44mm Luminor in black Carbotech are different enough that they can coexist in the collection.

Finally, back to having a PAM in the collection soon!

Thanks for the help all, I sincerely appreciate it.

Congrats!
I had a 682 with a display back.
Much prefer the inhouse movement.

Adding both the Sub and Carbotech to your collection would be a great move.

After wearing the 1661 for nearly 3 months straight I switched to a ceramic daytona yesterday and it is way too heavy.

That happens. Then you wonder why would you even want to wear a heavy metal watch???

I alternate with a steel AP 44mm Offshore to keep the balance right lol. Looking to trade up to a RG 44mm Offshore now which will be an even bigger difference

I once owned a 44mm AP in yellow gold, but for me it was too heavy too top heavy.

Wow now that I look at the picture the watch looks ridiculous big on my wrist and I do have 18.5-19cm circumference.

Just posted a photo in another thread and it reminded me of this thread. Figured I should conclude it with a wrist shot!

Appreciate all the comments.

Fantastic looking watch Mark, huge congratulations.

You needed a Pam in your collection, looks fantastic, love the matt green, brushed steel bezel, with the bezel harking back to their heritage with the porthole like bezel and rivets.

Hello my good good friend! I appreciate the warm comments! It's a great watch. I cannot wait until we have a Panerai adventure in NYC!

Nice 1055 OP!

So, you mentioned downsides to the 683. No in-house movement is the only significant negative for you. Why? While not an in-house Panerai movement strictly speaking, the caliber OP XXXIV caliber is produced by the Richemont Group to specifications requested by Panerai.

No particular reason other than I'd prefer to have an in house to a system movement all else being equal. And, the .900 is the OP movement it appears, just made fully in house now, or so I have been told. So, essentially what i bought in the 1055 is the OP movement, just made by Panerai instead of Richemont - unless I have my facts wrong.

Again, there is no problem with the OP, I'd just prefer to have in house if possible.

All good! I recently got back into the Panerai fold and picked up a 959.

What I find odd is that the P.900 calibre is listed as the movement for the 683 and 959 on p.com

I bought my 959 pre-owned about 5 weeks ago. It is V serial that was originally purchased in early 2020. The model was released in early 2019. So, which movement do I have?

I honestly have no idea. It's pretty arcane how this switch over occurred.

I am not even sure that there was a switch over...I called the Panerai concierge yesterday for an explanation. They confirmed that the P.900 has been the watches all along (683, 959). I'll go with that! It is confusing though as the all the bloggers (Hodinkee, aBlogtoWatch, etc.) specified the OP XXXIV when the watch was first announced in January 2019. According to the Panerai concierge, the watch was released in April 2019 with the P.900. Can anyone else confirm this?

I have a V serial 973 Sub that was sold new this past summer. The papers say that it has the OP XXXIV. However, in a call to Panerai concierge, she told me that it is the same movement as the P.900 that's in the W series. The specs are exactly the same. I pressed her for more details and she said that "Panerai did what it takes" to make it a In-House movement. In other words, they stamped P.900 on the new rotors and now, just like that....IN-HOUSE movement !! The desire (market research ?) for a thinner case on the new 42's is what made it a necessity to move away from the P9010.

Interesting. My papers say it has the OP XXXIV as well (V series 959 Sub sold new in February of this year). Papers = OP XXXIV and movement stamped p.900 on the NEW rotors??? Was there a switch over? If so, when?

Anyway, I love the watch and thinner case, so all good, just confused on this movement thing.

We'll probably never know the facts on the OPXXIV vs P.900 issue. Regardless, new, thinner 42mm Subs are very well proportioned and look great. I enjoying wearing mine !
