If you are more interested in an investment than the watch itself perhaps you should see an investment broker. Am sure there are better and more certain investments than gold Rolex watches.

You don't want to get fleeced by buying at bad prices so do your research, but many models in PM will lose money, that is the cost of doing business and frankly it is the definition of a luxury good, many SS Rolexes were once prohibitive luxuries but then became trade-able investments available to any Tom and Dick with a credit card, and thus they ceased to be luxury goods.

Let me tell you a story about 10-15 years ago when every watch you purchased lost value.

That is more the norm.

Losing value on a watch isn’t a bad thing. It’s normal. It’s normally to pay for things you enjoy

Quite.....things in life cost money, they depreciate. Holidays, restaurants, luxury clothes, cars (especially cars), furniture, jewellery, watches.....yes, a few SS Rolexes currently defy this trend, but so what. Luxury goods are just toys, nice toys we buy for fun. If you want a profit, invest in the stock market.
The whole ‘Rolex and money’ thing sucks the joy out of the hobby.

Depends how much you want it, its like buying a 911 Porsche, may lose money, may gain money but its the enjoyment of owning and using.

If you're worried about losing money on a 40K watch it's not for you.

Am I destined to lose money on a 18k watch?

Why do we do the things we do?

Your motivation to buy a DD appears to arise from extrinsic value versus the pure intrinsic value of a DD for the individual.

I understand the viewpoint of SS values being strong and the DD value not keeping pace.

At this time the incentive for buying a PM model is appreciation of its intrinsic value. Otherwise you will be distressed about the lost extrinsic value - in other words what that $37K would be worth had it been used to buy 2 more SS pieces.

Just my 2¢...folks who besmirch your question are the same people who try to finagle free floor mats from a car dealer for their exotic purchase.

So let that roll off your back...

If 36mm I'd go 18238 as the 'oldest' since you still have the 3155, but a good one with little wear on the bracelet will be 13-15k€

This!

Isn't this kind of discussion is in breach of the AUP?

The OP is about breaking even or losing money. Any horological or aesthetic considerations seem coincidental.

I bought my DD40 knowing that I wanted the watch as my first gold piece and that residual value would most likely be lower than what I bought it at. That doesn't mean that I didn't try and find the best deal for me; I ended up going with DAVIDSW and have no regrets there.

Bottom line is if you're worried about losing money here, I'd probably sit it out for awhile until you can come to terms with that. DD40 kills, so totally worth it for me.

If one purchases to keep and enjoy. Not one cent lost.

Most luxury item purchases will depreciate quite a bit with ownership. SS Rolex currently is a bit of an anomaly and if resale value is a major factor in your decision, a SS Rolex would be a better choice than a DD.

There's a DD40 thread on here from a month or so ago. A member stated that he received 25% off from an AD. I'd take that deal in a heartbeat over a SS Daytona because I like the aesthetic more. However if considering purchasing these pieces at regular AD MSRP prices it's really something to consider. Whats more important to you the potential for appreciation or the beauty and enjoyment of the piece? Then again you could just buy both.

If you are buying a watch only to worry about its retained value then my advice would be not to buy that watch. Buy a watch that you want to keep, wear and enjoy.

But, ultimately it is your money and your decision.

Plan on losing money, if you buy the watch and sell it. Only buy to wear and leave, hopefully, leave to a family member.

Do you only buy watches for investment or value retention? Both are the wrong reasons. A Day-Date40 is a lifetime achievement timepiece, and is something you wear and pass down to the kids. It sounds like the wrong watch for you just the way your tone of the post comes across.

Yep...that’s bang on right. It may go up a few grand, down a few grand. Who cares it doesn’t matter. As others have said think about what’s chucked on cars, holidays, equities that go down etc...a few grand is peanuts when you think about how long this watch will last for and who you can leave it to when you peg it. Just buy it cause it’s a truly great watch or don’t...because a Small amount of money means more to you than the watch itself.

On the converse, if you buy a daytona at retail then wear the heck out of it and never sell it, did you gain money or lose money?

In other words the Op is not ready for a precious metal purchase.

Op,

Just stick with SS man. If that few grand is going to change your life well your not ready to play with the big boys.

You don’t seem like you really want the watch for the enjoyment of it, you appear to be mote concerned about its value retention. Shop around, maybe a Tudor day date is something worth looking in to.

It is nice to know you’ll be able to recoup most or all of what you spent. It’s also nice to get exactly what you want and not worry too much about resale. I say decide what you want, negotiate the best deal you can, and get on with enjoying your watch. Working quite nicely for me.
