I wore mine for years daily...just grew into other watches and my wife didn’t like me wearing a gold watch.

I’ve worn a gold Rolex every day for a year or so, holds up just as well as steel so far. I don’t find any issues with the “softness,” it scratches just as easily as stainless imo.

I acquired my 118208 (yellow gold with oyster bracelet) only two months ago and have been dailying it. I shower, sleep, garden, and shoot hoops in it. No problems as of yet.

The whole debate regarding 18k gold being too soft: I'm a coin collector. Up until 1933, our US govt issued the equivalent of ~22k gold coins for circulation in the economy. Many coins that I and other coin collectors collect are surprisingly in great condition. Gold is stronger than it gets credit for.

Life is short: wear your gold!

No problem wearing my 18k DD daily! But then it’s white gold—not sure I could pull off the YG bling!!

Any doubts I had about the security of the hidden clasp disappeared when I seen his countless fights with it on. That should count as stress testing

I wear YG DD as a daily probably 6 months out of the year minimum in several month cycles usually. No issues. These are robust watches designed for daily wear, they are not dainty fragile timepieces. PM or SS.

This +1

Wouldn’t wear it daily turning wrenches under the hood. But I wear my DD40 daily (24x7, swim golf, sleep etc) and it holds up fine. Gold is more durable than most give it credit.

Thank you all for the reply's, I honestly see no issue and love the watch

My next step is getting my hands on a 18238 to make the comparison.
I viewed a 1128238 and loved it but would need to compare them as the command a 4-5k difference in price. I appreciate these are luxury items but it also has to make sense to pay that premium

The same as all things some people claim a big difference in weight and feel, others say the differences are negligible so i am keeping my fingers crossed for an AD with both in stock

Rock this guy as my daily with zero issues and most would argue that AP's are more delicate than a Rolex.

If you love it, then time to get it and wear the hell out of it!

36mm Day Date yellow gold, the dial I am not 100% decided which is exciting as I like a few of them. I viewed a champagne dial which is beautiful in person but seeing some of the silver dials on here especially diamond set has opened my eyes.

I am going to contact watchfinder.co.uk as they have plenty in stock and have an office in Glasgow, after viewing a 18238 and 118238 simultaneously I will have a much better lay of the land

As per my other thread I started off looking at two tone Datejust models which I still love but my logic is.. Get the grail watch first for mostly practical reasons, I love it and find my self in the position to afford it then in the future if I wish to have a Datejust it is easier financially.
Simply put it is easier to have 6-7k for a Datejust than 15ish for a DD.

It makes sense in my head

Stunning watch! That is on a whole other level ad it is great to see it out in the wild rather than just being a show piece

A gold Rolex is an everyday watch for the generations. The proper fit is important so its not sliding all over the place and hitting everything. Same goes for any metal watch.

I suspect the watches for sale with really loose bracelets were ill fitting.
I have seen plenty of loose fitting watching rattling around on men, with a proper fit I can not imagine there being an issue

You will enjoy solid gold. There is a magic to it, looks and feel. In dusk, it has a glow to it like nothing else. A two-tone watch is still just a stainless steel watch with a few gold parts on it. Nice, but certainly not the same.

No problem wearing my DD all day, on vacation, the gold is beautiful, as another poster mentioned, that soft glow is so warm, a really calming presence I find on the wrist.

They're tanks, all of them, built to last. I wore mine in Aruba for 10 days snorkelling, swimming in the pool and ocean, out touring around, magnificent watch in my opinion.

18238 A serial(1999), YG, silver dial with sticks.

All amazing watches the tone changes so much in the varying light in each picture.

I have reached out to arrange viewing of the following, ideally at the same time

18238
https://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Rolex/...1611755&rank=3

118238

Who cares whether grandads used to wear them. Wear what you want rather than listen to people who use that excuse because they can’t afford one or pull one off. And I’m talking full DD40 as opposed to the £10k 18038 or whatever they are.

My concerns are not style or fashion opinion related, they are purely pragmatic.
My first question was about durability which has been answered and then balancing out cost/value.

I am sure everyone has there own process and this is mine

In terms of style or fashion I have no concerns about that at all, we like what we like. For example I am in my early 30s and most men my age I see with sportier models but they do nothing for me.
I'm an old soul anyway

However his was not the normal 18K presidential. Way back when the bracket links were hollow. Not until the last 30 years or so ago were the links solid.

He bought his watch at an AD in Hong Kong who replaced his bracket at the time of sale with what was known as the Hong Kong band back then. The links were solid 18K. The only way visual way to tell the difference was on the hidden clasp. Rather than a crown it was a flat curve.

The watch has been serviced by a RSC and it is considered original both watch and band. The band however is considered Rolex authorized original, not Rolex original. Back then Rolex permitted these Hong Kong bands to be sold on Rolex watches from ADs.

After so many years of wear there is quite a bit of stretch in the band. But I guess not bad for 45+ years of daily wear.
Same thing with me. My Dad bought me a Day Date back in the mid-70's, which I wore virtually everyday for 15 years. Back then, you could take your watch to a RSC (in L.A., they were authorized service centers, not owned by Rolex). When I went to change my Dial from Champagne to Black, they informed me it was not a factory Rolex Presidential bracelet but a solid god bracelet from Hong Kong. Only difference with your story is my Dad didn't know he bought a Day-Date with Hong Kong bracelet.
