I've said it numerous times now - precious metal watches are freakin flying out the door at the moment. Covid has made everyone rich. LOL

Prices are at all time highs for them on the gray market. Yes some of them are still below MSRP but that difference is shrinking fast.

IMHO your lucky you got 5-10% off your other pieces. Alot of ADs I talk to are a big fat 0% off full gold pieces. Platinum purely on price point may be slightly negotiable as $60k+ on a watch is HUGE money for 99% of the population.

The stock market has been a nice ride for anyone in individual stocks and think we will see a lot of that gain.

Anyways, I just received 10% off a PM Sub last week and just had to ask.

I disagree with people here about not asking for discount. Would you not ask for a discount on a $150,000 car or gladly pay sticker? If you’re in business then you know everything is a reasonable negotiation.

Appreciate the thoughts here, will let everyone know here how this journey goes!

Never hurts to ask for a discount. The worst they can do is say no.

Don’t forget if they don’t budge on price, you can probably try to get like a BLRO or SS Daytona thrown in the mix.

The more expensive the watch, the more I be inclined to ask for a discount since even 1-2% discount can be a substantial amount in normal daily use.

Don’t believe the talk of being cheap asking for a discount.

I would pay up and ask for something as a sweetener like a every day watch like a SS Daytona

My AD asked to borrow my Platinum to show a client who had shown serious interest but didn’t like the 12 month delivery .

Hopefully you got a SS Daytona for the favor?

A used platinum Daytona just sold online for 83K. That may over the new list. It wasn't but a year or so ago they traded around 50K used from a then list price of 75K. The whole sports line, except TT, is really hot now so I would not expect any discount.

Of course, the "discount" is just temporary as you will be declaring and the taxes in your home state right!?

OP, looking forward the the incoming but personally I think more than a token discount will be tough. Good luck!

Ask them for their 'best price'.
If you were selling 'them' a watch, they'd try to knock you down on price, and wouldn't be embarrassed.
Same principle.

I agree with you here, but when you're someone who haggles over 1/2 per cent it can be quite draining and also that person becomes a pain in the arse.

The pain of haggling over .5%, still works both ways, and applies to both parties 'bums'.

I bought a Platty in 2013 for £38k a big discount back then ,I was then allowed to buy the first Black 116500 they had arrive then then first white 116500 .

They really look after me , So if they want to borrow a watch it’s a total pleasure to help them out

Yep 100% ask for a discount. When buying things in the 10s of thousands you'd be a fool not to ask for one.

Goodluck and I hope you get a good deal.

Agreed. I would be embarrassed to NOT negotiate (aka ask for a discount).

Thanks for the feedback - I will definitely be asking for a discount, especially since I have bought a few watches in 3 months. Will let everyone know how it goes, worth a shot!

For a platinum watch and with that purchase history, you should definitely get a discount. Question is how much...

My 1st Rolex purchase back in 2006

One AD said no discount because people that buy Rolexes do not ask for discounts.
Another AD said 18% off.
Guess which AD I purchased from.

Could have had one around 2016 for about 18% off but couldn’t swing it at the time. Fast forward to summer 2019 there are none to be had and zero discount. Many AD’s were asking for huge non refundable deposits for the promise of the possibility of an order. I found one at a local AD here (not my usual) and purchased it in a October 2019. There was one preowned from 2013 with a link missing and no Diamond dial and they were asking same retail as a new one with a Diamond dial. The Rolex market is different depending on the market location. Up here in Toronto, zero discounts on anything and the AD’s sell directly to the GREY market. I know. I’ve seen the ledgers... to the OP, always ask. Worst they can say is no, but I’d be surprised if you got one with a discount. I really would. Good luck and enjoy!

Back in 2017 i was offered one at a discount. And there was on stock. Mine if i wanted. Even got to try it on. I opted for the blue white gold.

Just a year after i think, i asked for one at same price. Not only was there a price increase but no more discount. And the one on stock was spoken for already.

One of my small horological regrets.

Supply and demand will dictate the outcome. If an AD has several people willing to pay full list on a watch like a platinum daytona, then they will offer 0% discount. However, my view is that it is always better to ask for discount. If customers stop asking for discount, it further reinforces the power imbalance we now see, where customers are almost laughed at for trying to buy SS sports watches, and we hear things like "We don't discount Rolex, even PM". It's easy to forget that people may be dropping six figures on luxury goods and we are made to feel grateful if we get what we want at retail, and to feel rude for asking for discounts. At ~38% commission they could throw us a bone generally.

Not always. Laws changed a couple years ago. Depending on the state and the seller. They may need to charge tax.

I asked which watches they'd give me a discount on. The results given my choices was the Pt Daytona. Ultimately it and the Smurf were the watches which were really in the running so it worked out well enough.

In my opinion, if you ask your AD to get you a particular watch, you should not ask for a discount. You have asked for the watch, and you already know what the price is.

If they call randomly and offer you a watch you have not requested, or if you walk in and see a watch on display, then I think it is OK to ask for a better price.

Ah. The good old days when the “Rolex store” still sold Rolexes.

It find it pretty astonishing that a Rolex AD would discount any reference in this current market.

Why should they? There is no reason to leave money on the table, especially given Rolex absolute market dominance.

I would be willing to bet these were small family owned independent stores that are still discounting PM Rolex...and that is big reason they won't be Rolex AD in the future as Rolex will move onward to larger, multi chain stores that won't erode the brand with loose pricing.

Can't cry about not being able to "afford" the required Rolex build out when you aren't getting all the $$$ possible on your sales and EASY sales @ that.

When spending that kind of money, you should ask for any terms you feel would make the purchase easier. Who cares what an AD thinks of you asking. They are lucky to have customers of your level.
