Hey OP. I have the original black deep-sea and also had the opportunity to buy the JC when they first came out. I didn't get it. I found the green writing to be too obvious so passed. Back to the original black. I had to remove the divers extension to get the perfect fit and I have similar size wrists to you.
I think the DS is very unique and different from other Rolexes. You have 2 beautiful models already so maybe look at something else? Tudor or AP?

When the DSSD was introduced I wanted one but found it ridiculously thick on the wrist and the bracelet a total mismatch.

Couple a years later tried it once more and bought it straight away, never regretted it. The old model still has my preference in all its clumsiness.

The last Rolex model designed with only function in mind

Well, I guess what everyone sees is subjective. I had the exact opposite experience. I can't imagine anyone would consider any Rolex ceramic bezel dull, they're all glossy and shiny and many accuse it of not being "tool" enough and more jewelry like, add the thick domed no AR coated crystal to the mix and the Deepsea is a beautiful shiny jewel. The dial is another story for the D-Blue, lighting has a lot to do with what you see, also it depends on what exactly you are expecting, more blue, lighter blue, darker blue, more black, etc.....
The bracelet, well that's an old watch, likely used, and as someone who's worn brand new crispy fresh watches before, nothing compares to a factory fresh bnib polish from Geneva, even your other models couldn't compare to that, it has nothing to do with the Deepsea or it's bracelet, unless that one was a fake.

For me, it was love at first sight and I've bought the black twice before, the D-Blue is amazing, my favorite dial (imitated by so many now) and could easily be my favorite sports model Rolex, with a big maybe second only to a white dial 116500.

But it's no biggie, we aren't supposed to like every model, good thing Rolex has many on offer. If I wrote a thread for every Rolex I saw in person and didn't like I would probably just come off as a person who doesn't like Rolex.

I think the DSSD is one of the very few Rolex that stand apart from the crowd. I own several different Rolex and the DSSD and the day date are the two that make it apparent to me that I am wearing something different!

I think I would like one but I've never tried it on. Good move OP checking it out in person.
If you don't love it, I think that is good. There are so many out there that I do like, it helps when one doesn't make the cut.

The JC dial looks very dark in certain lighting, and pops in other. I share your frustrations that it's plain difficult to see various references in person...

Edit: also I own a JC and it looks quite badass every time I take it out
I totally agree
The frustrations around seeing these watches in person is hard to get over, but the OP's initiative was commendable

I can't reconcile the OP's impressions of the particular watch.
As far as the dial goes, I wasn't sure what to think of it until I saw that dial in person at the dealer.
The dial pops like nothing else in the Rolex diver range and it blew me away for the first time in my watch collecting history
Maybe the lighting was not the best

I tried on my ADs personal JC (2019 version) and thought it fit my 7" wrist well, appearance and all without be too big or heavy, substantial, yes. It wasn't dull at all to me. The gradient dial did have a subtle yet gorgeous pop to it. Beautifully colored.

The DS JC was not sized to fit my wrist a bit over 7 1/2 inches but was close enough that I was able to see how it fits and how comfortable to wear. It was not as large as I thought it would be, not much larger then the Polar lug to lug but is thicker, but did not look too big on my wrist. What really surprised me was that the watch didn't have the "pop" I was expecting based on the pics and videos I have seen? In comparison to the Polar bracelet the JC bracelet had more of a dull look to it, the bezel was not glossy and the blue/black dial looked darker and looked mostly dark? I was in a office with florescent lightning not showroom lighting and I even went to a nearby window but no improvement. I was really disappointed in its presentation. This was the 116660 model and was a 16 or 17 but had some stickers still attached, could it be that the watch needed to be cleaned? To be honest it looked like a bad fake replica, but I am sure that it was a legit watch? Has anyone had a similar experience viewing a Rolex?

Wow, what you are describing isn’t possible. I get more compliments about my 116660 JC DSSD than my other Rolex watches. Dull, I think not...

My DSSD Blue pops and shines just as well as my other Rolexes. The only thing I can think of was the lighting was off.

Once again this is because the DSSD has the ring lock in there taking up what would have been a larger watch face and longer hands to match.

For example, these two are basically the same dimensions but the POC looks much larger in face, dial and hands.

Since they corrected the big problem with it, which was the narrow bracelet I like it much more. I might even get one eventually. I owned the original version and had no problem with the case dimensions, just the skinny bracelet.

The sub dial looks bigger because it is bigger; so is the SD43 dial and that Omega PO dial is much larger. If they got rid of the ring lock I would buy one the next day. It makes so little sense it is amazing.

I would wait for the 126660 as the bracelet is thicker and more proportionate.
I could never get into the DSSD as it was just too big for me and the bracelet tapered too thin.

When the SD4k 40mm 116600 was released, I bought it as soon as it come out.
IMHO the 116600 is the best dive watch but I have yet to see a SD43 or a JC yet.

Ive had black and green subs and the JC. Have to agree with the wow thing plus the writing on the inner bezel actually annoyed me. I did have the DE removed and it fit MUCH better but overall it was just too big. The green sub imo is the nicest watch Rolex make offers so much in different lighting

I had both the 116600 and the SD43 until I sold the 116600 to get a BLNR.
While I think the 116600 is the best of the 40mm SD's when I saw the SD43 it just really worked for me. Here they are together.

+1 spot on.

When I had the sub, SD43, and JC trying on at an AD the SD43 was the perfect middle ground.

I have 6.75" wrist. The JC was just to thick and big for me anyway. If your wrists are large enough there is no doubt it's a amazing blue and green dial...just wow.

Sub was excellent as usual, but side by side, the SD43 wore and looked a little bit more special than the Sub. Yes SD43 is a bit thicker and larger but felt it work comfortable.
