Very Cool. I had a 1938 business coupe that originally had a single drivers seat, the rest was storage space. My dad and I made it into a Street Rod, 327cid, Turbo 350, 12 bolt 3.73 Posi car.

Well, I didn't make my post to compare the relative merits of Chevrolet and Honda, or the longevity or appeal of either.

My point was that having been born in 1949, I remember when Chevrolet automobiles from the 1950s were everywhere.

Then I qualified that, because in those days, you wouldn't see many as finely outfitted as yours.

Sorry that you were offended.

Agree, the type of black paint lifecycle matters.

Why would anyone procure a 'presteige' car and then settle on the paint???

No, No, I get that, sorry, didn't mean to come across that way, besides my '55 was nothing but a 'Plain Jane' back in it's day. The point is certain cars in certain time periods will always be classic. There is a night and day difference between a '54 and a '55 Chevy. Truth be told of the 'Tri-Fives' the '56 is considered the step child.

Good question.

However after speaking to a friend at Mannheim remarketing, the company that handles a majority of lease backs for major manufacturers it’s a real issue because approx 5 to 6 of 10 Porsche Volvo bmw merc audi cars off lease are either white or black. This affects resale and auction prices.

The feeling is that charging people $800-1500 for better paint choice and quality isn’t worth it and that it should be no charge.

(Kinda the premise of the post)

Ahhh, ok. Have seen in Fcar circles where Arrest Me Red is more $$ than silver, for example. Aston Martin is green of course.

Maybe it depends on the marque?

Of course a Gulf paint scheme is a different $$$$ animal depending on the automobile.

A few years ago the pigments that are used to make red paint went way up in price so I can see that being justified for certain reds, I wouldn't pay for an upcharge myself. I remember when the 63 Sting Ray came out, my dad bought a black split window, the Sebring silver was a $100. upcharge, that was a big deal.

About 80% of Porsche sports cars (911, 718) are white, black, grey or one of the silvers. I don't think its because people don't want to pay more (guards red and racing yellow are free along with white and black), but because they want it that way.

Re Black getting dirty quickly; the best line I heard was "black isn't a color, it's a hobby".

Good thinking!

In all seriousness, we drive a Lexus RX350 (white) and a Volvo XC60 (white), which I don't think of as "prestige" cars. When I think of prestige cars, I think of Bentley, Rolls, Maybach, and the like.

Either way, I choose cars almost exclusively in white mostly because I like the way they look and they hide dirt fairly well. I've never really given a thought to paint color specifically, I'm just drawn to white cars and that's what I end up with.

I've owned my share of white cars, too, and here in the desert, it's a wise choice. I've never had a black car before and actually once swore I'd never own one, but here I am with a black car and living in the desert.

I myself have never owned a Black car though I have to admit when freshly washed and detailed it looks great ...... for about 10 minutes until the dust and whatnot starts to appear?

Especially during the Spring with the pollen!! I go crazy!!

My wife's MDX was Black and it drove me nuts whenever we'd use it on the weekends for family outing. It never bothered her of course!?!

I just won’t do the nice car, nice paint anymore.
This is the latest; dirt is virtually undetectable!

I bought a prestige car and then Seth came along and showed me what a prestige car really is.
I ponied up for the upgrade metallic paint but I actually never liked the wheels on my Mercedes, but I’m too cheap to buy new replacements as 1. there’s nothing wrong with them and 2. I’ll probably just give them a bunch of curb rash anyway.
And, I’m like $5K closer to a real prestige car!

I almost always get black. Not metallic black but black. I special ordered a S5 Audi a few years back and did silver which on that model was an upgrade. At least the silver I chose. Much easier to keep clean, but just not as "cool" When I ordered my AMG back to black.....Black is a PITA but love it when it is detailed. I enjoy messing with the paint so works for me. However,,,,I am thinking about doing a matte gray or black wrap on it in the spring. MB offers matte finishes but they are 3-10K upcharges depending on the vehicle. The more the vehicle the more the upcharge...I did grind on that decision quite a bit when ordering but opted for some other options instead of the matte paint.

So to answer your question, yes. Stock black paint on a special order.

56 is my favorite as well.

Most people can't tell the difference between the 55 and 56 except the real gearheads. The 57 is easily identified. I was also a big fan of the Nomads.

I had 57 Pontiac Hearse that I drove for a while.

The early 50s cars were never considered cool until fairly recently. Basically it was all 55-57. Even the 58 style was not really sought after much. American Graffiti may have brought a bit of cool factor to it later.

I had a lot of hot rod friends back then with Model As, 55-57 muscle and Scat Pack Mopar, Ford Cobras, Chevelles, etc One guy even went on to race Funny Cars. (Gordie Bonin...240 Gordie)

I am ordering a new Porsche 911. I won't pay for the metallic color uncharge. the "regular" colors are fine. seems like a scam to me.

Not really, those of us old enough can EASILY tell the difference between a '55 and a '56 !

Regardless, both great cars of the Harley Earl era, I'm pretty sure his stamp was on the '56....
