Hard not to go with a Seiko for this criteria - some great options in the sub $500 range.

Some independent brands may be worth a look as well - Brew watches...

I would also look at the Steinhart Pilots watches.

Seiko SKX or Sport 5. Very impressed with my SKX009 that I got for $300 or so.

I also suggest Seiko: 5s, Presage or Prospex.

The Prospex 'Alpinist' SPB123 looks great, maybe I should pay a little more for this one.

Hard to beat Seiko and stretching to get the Alpinist is a great move.

Seiko SKX 007 or 009. Lighter than the Turtles.

I have a few Turtles, too, do not find them that heavy. Especially on rubber vs. bracelet.

If go with the Hamilton Field King. It’s brushed steel with polished bezel and looks great in any strap.

Ok here’s my list

1. Hamilton Khaki 38mm field watch
2. Squale 1545 Maxi dial
3. SKX 0097/009 but get the Uncle Seiko jubilee. It tapers from 22mm to 16mm, that’s right 16. The Turtle can use the same bracelet too.

This is actually my favorite watch right now. It’s built well, but doesn’t feel heavy on the wrist. I found it new for $260 on eBay. Seiko PADI Turtle.

Timex Expedition Scout, about $30.00. Then I would get a Seiko Sarb033, and put a dark brown leather strap on it.

Timex Expedition Scout, about $30.00. Looks very similar to the Hamilton Khaki Field. I have the dark green canvas strap, dark gray dial, with a yellow second hand. One of my favorite watches. Then I would get a Seiko Sarb033, and put a dark brown, or black leather strap on it.

Without a doubt, i have recommend that watch so many times. When someone asks what can i buy for less than x$. It’s always a seiko sxk, a Hamilton khaki automatic, or a 2254.50 omega. I say unless you’re ready to spend a few thousand, you can’t go wrong with the Hamilton.

Id vote Seiko. Probably lean towards a turtle. I do love my Samurai and SKX.

On the NATO strap I wouldn’t be worried about the stink. I wear a NATO for work. I work outside. I sweat like a pig in summer, get rained on, get dirty and muddy. Its not as much an issue as you would think. I have a few different straps and like being able to change up look of the watch. Takes no time to slide one off and the other on. Have mostly blue sharks and love em. Maybe every couple weeks scrub it in the sink with dawn and switch to another.

I’d get any Rolex at a reasonable (Aka great deal) price, preferably pre owned with box and papers, have it serviced, wear it non stop for 8 years and resell for the same or better price.
