Unfortunately I agree. Not having massive wrists I do love the 39m explorer, it fits me perfectly. Doesn’t make sense to have in my collection right now but I’ve always intended to add one. Would be sad to see it go to 41 and risk gray market markup to get a 39m.

Less concerned on gmt as I think the difference in size would be less noticeable

From a marketing perspective having different case sizes enables for product diversity and better customer compatibility (think small wrists vs big wrists), but from a manufacturing perspective having same sizes enables for much smoother and simplified manufacturing and repairs which turns into cost savings.

I agree. They seem to be making a concerted effort to differentiate their product line (discontinuing the the 116710LN, switching the GMT to a jubilee bracelet, adjusting sizes to 39,40,41,42,43,44mm, removing the OP39 to avoid competing with the Explorer I, etc). I would guess they have the sizing they want, but that's just a guess obviously.

39mm - Explorer
40mm - GMT and Daytona (AK and Milgaus might be discontinued in coming years???)
41mm - Sub
42mm - Explorer II
43mm - SD43
44mm - DSSD
My brain that enjoys structure and order totally loves this idea.

I think so, if the sub is now 41 then the others to follow. Will be years though.

No way is the GMT changing its size. BLRO was all new 2 years and BLNR was all new last year. If it were to change, it would have changed then. GMT will stay 40mm. Rolex is giving a 1mm size different through out the line and the GMT represents the classic 40mm size now.

Rolex is making the smart decision to make the sub and gmt distinctly different product lines.

In the 11 series they were very similar, for the 12 series we see real differences to give both a unique personality.

As such I cannot imagine the GMT case size increasing any time soon. The earliest a redesign will happen is at least 8+ years away in any case as it has only just been done. When the GMT changes were made in 2018 I’m sure they were well aware of the 2020 submariner plans!

This is very important to understand. Rolex has been positioning it’s line for a few years now. The 41mm Sub is not a new idea. It is in fact the last piece to finally be updated to the new current line up. For the most part Rolex has put all its cards on the table now. Any more surprises from futures model tweaks will come within the new model sizing structure for each family.
