I think we were quoted something like $185 over the phone when I asked, but it was fully covered by our insurance so I didn't pay too much attention to it.

My wife had it done as well and she was surprised at how high up they went and how unpleasant it was.
I guess once you know, you're ready for it. NHL players in the bubble are tested every day, and been over a month. That would suck.

He was freaking out a bit prior to, and I didn't watch the actual insertion. I thought it was just a cotton swab of the interior nostril and didn't fully understand why he was so scared. Oops... I absolutely hate needles, yet I would rather get a shot than do that thing again...unfortunately, I think we're going to have to do it again in November prior to Aruba. Don't get me wrong, I know how lucky we are to be healthy and have the ability to travel...but damn this test!

To get to travel back there I'd probably go with the slide your stupid swab in one ear and out the other, as well. Have fun in Maine.......and take pictures.

Yup it's no picnic. Me and my wife had one a few days before our son was born so we could enter the hospital. Definitely very uncomfortable - had tears in my eyes.

Truthfully, the test is easier than a Nasolaryngoscopy
Every 6 months my ENT puts this scope through my nose down my throat and into my lungs all in one shot He also uses this metal curette to scrape wax off of my ear drum Both cause the same sensation of discomfort and watery eyes as the virus test |

I got tested about a month ago, had a serious cold and couldn't go to work (obviously), got tested just to be sure. Not a pleasant experience... But oh well. Result was negative, just a cold.

I suspect when law enforcement sees an out of state tag on a car, they stop it and check for the proper paperwork or confirm a quarantine destination is being directly driven to.

I don’t think so. We’re getting close but we aren’t the Soviet Union yet. “ Papers please“!! No!

They're also going to ask us to fill out some form about the consequences of not quarantining and things of that nature. We'll see how it goes - all I know is that we wanted to follow the rules so we wouldn't be stuck in Maine for 14 days...bringing the work computer just in case!

I know someone that had the test last week and was told the swab "had to be inserted until it hit something". That sounds pleasant and professional, seems a little unnecessary.

I would guess “hitting” a droplet of saliva would be sufficient since that’s currently the most dangerous substance on planet Earth.

I know what you mean, I had mine at a drive-up city test and it was like a Prostate exam through the nose.

Yes of course it is. Any other way would be remarkably unconstitutional. I’m only speaking for the United States obviously but we are talking about Maine.

The police aren’t going to ask for anything. Heck, 25% of the people walking around Bar Harbor two weekends ago didn’t even have a mask on them. Drove me nuts.

Anatomy class! Below is an MRI image. The single arrow points to the nostril. The double arrow points to the adenoids in the nasopharynx. That is the swab target area. The distance from the nostril to that tissue is 8.7cm or 3.4 inches. If you swab only the nasal cavity just beyond the nostril, the sensitivity of the test goes down and you get more false negatives. The virus tends to be found in higher concentrations in the nasopharynx.
I haven't undergone a test yet but it does make me squeamish. That said, I just had a dental filling done, and I'd rather get the swab even though the filling wasn't too bad. COVID swab path by uscmatt99, on Flickr |

Please understand that while not pleasant, if the person administering your test only swabs the entrance to the nose (the vestibule) and there is not some mild discomfort, it is NOT a valid test and may give a false negative.
Unfortunately, we are seeing this type of poor testing at some community test sites, as the folks administering the test do not want to hurt people. However, there's more harm by not doing it properly. Please make sure your test is properly administered. The NEJM has a good video on how it looks: https://youtu.be/DVJNWefmHjE This is from 2009, but is correct for all NP swabs, including for influenza testing. Sent from my IN2025 using Tapatalk |
