The fact that there is a thread about it means it's getting the needed attention, which is perfect.

How come the 16570 is not extremely popular?

No reason for them to be more popular. God forbid something be affordable. The new explorer wears like a wall clock on a oyster band.

It's a nice watch, but the E2 doesn't have the same heritage or history as the other lines.

Not popular?

A few years ago the Forum was crammed with Polar Exp II incomings. It was the BLNR-of-the-day back then.

It seems that there is a single model that is at the forefront for a 2-3 year run before it's knocked of by the next must have.

I expect that the Kermit II will be the next watch-du-jour

No silly Pepsi bezel to flop around. Thin case. Sapphire crystal . Probably my most comfy watch on the 78790SEL. Best vintage Rolex value proposition at 5-6k.
$5-6K? Please tell me where. I have wanted an 5 digit for a while now and I should have purchased last year when you could get them in the mid to high $5K range (it seems just last year). Now I'm seeing them regularly in the 7-8K and some examples look terrible.

Apparently (I wasn't on the scene at the time) GMTs were once seen as a bit try hard and the Explorer II was cooler and more desirable. The black dial one specifically. They're still undeniably cool but people want more clasp and bezel for Instagram . My theory.

To me the Explorer II has always seemed to be the 2nd tier of SS sports models that people bought when they couldn't aquire Subs or Master II's at retail or justify spending on them in secondary markets.

1655’s are going for $15-20,000, with Rolex moving further away from what they once were the 40mm EII will get there.

These are soon $10,000 no cheaper. Full sets $15-$20,000 depending on condition/variant/etc. We are there now for the price jump. It’s there.

Recent price jump on these is insane. No other way to put it. Really sucks for those of us that didn't pick one up a year or two ago and are now basically priced out. I refuse to play the "vintage" market when prices are being artificially driven higher and higher.

I wish they were less popular!

I had the SEL no holes black dial from 2011 to 2019. Back when I bought it these were the runt of the litter, nobody wanted the Exp II and I couldn’t figure why. I paid 2750$ for it...I gave it to my GF in 2016 and she wore it for 3 years. We sold it early this year for 8.5k...

Not quite $5k range, but I got 2 earlier this year for $6,500 and $6,100 (both white dials). K and P series, so both holes case SEL. The former came with punched papers and the latter had just been cleaned up by one of the prominent West Coast refinishers and both have thick, sharp lugs and clean chamfers. Negotiate what you can but be ready to pull the trigger when you find what you like and hunt as long as it takes (took me a few months, then found them back to back and decided to jump on both). Both from solid sellers on here.

If you call it a "less popular" GMT, then the prices are still reasonable. Like year GMTs in not great shape seem to be going for $11k+, and clean models well above that. Same movement, just not a rotating bezel and a different color scheme. A lot of watch for the money, comparatively...

Pretty decent example for $6500. In my humble opinion.

I went out in 2008 to buy a preowned GMT to compliment my dressier watches...I had no idea that the Explorer II even existed. When I spied the polar 16570 and tried it on, it just seemed like the perfect size and aesthetic for me. No bling, no flash...just a solid and as yet indestructible watch. At it's heart it's a 16710 and if I wanted ( and I may ), I can pop a 16710 bezel on it and have a Pan Am or Oreo style GMT. It's not precious and I like that.

Owning black and white, I think Explorer II is a great watch, it was indeed way underrated, but closed the gap with current pricing. I don't see it going much from current point as it is a niche for WIS only and most people wont take it as a Rolex icon.
.
BTW as much as I love it, it dosn't fit my 6.5 wrist as nice as other sport models. Too flat.

Way back before the artificial shortage game it was deemed a lesser watch by most because it had a fixed bezel (even if it for years shared movement with the GMT). I guess it has the same relationship to the GMT as the YM has to the Submariner. I have been wearing mine daily for 10 years without issue.

Have to agree but thanks to these so called social media sites many have lost there own brain power to think for themselves and many buy only what's hyped as best, rare, hot, investment etc. And to the OP wear your watch in good health its a great watch.
