While I agree, Patek's 5196 is still a classic choice and you can't go wrong with it. Don't overlook Vacheron either. Some great buys pre-owned for their classic dress watches.

Lange makes the best finished watches of any mainstream brand, followed by VC. Breguet is nice too if you like the unique looks. Patek these days is about on par with Breguet's finishing but their movements are quite small and their prices are quite high. I'd try on all of these brands and see what resonates with you.
