It sounds like you really just wanted the Sub date. I would recommend NOT to do the same thing again by “settling” on the Explorer. IMO, you should just sell now (not grey) and use the funds towards the actual timepiece you wanted in the first place.

Keep it. You've got a great watch with the added sentiment of being a gift from your wife. The flashy part is all in your head. It's stainless steel, like countless other watches out there. Nobody notices.
I agree that you should add the Sub later, maybe for another milestone. They would make a great pair covering any occasion/ style and will last a lifetime. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk |

Agree. Save and add the sub. You'll want a flashier DJ after wearing the sub for a few weeks anyway and the pairing of the two will be great.

You’ll get murdered doing a trade in with a grey dealer towards a hard to source SS pieve. Sell it outright and buy what you want. The worst offers I ever get when selling (and I mean bad) are from all the grey dealers. Usually the same few guys.

Sounds like the Submariner is what you wanted and the compromise purchase isn’t going as planned.
I highly doubt you will like the watch even if you kept it because it isn’t what you wanted in the first place. Sell the DJ yourself or you will take a significant loss trading it in to a grey dealer and get the submariner. |

I purchased a Sub (first Rolex) earlier this year and felt it was too “bland”... I quickly traded it for my Datejust that I absolutely love!

I totally get it, especially if its a fluted WG bezel.
Post it in the classified and get what you want. You can get a box and papers 5 digit sub for 7-9k USD if you are patient, or around the same that you spent if you don’t want to wait. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It's a great watch, but trust your gut and sell if it doesn't sing to you. I'm doing exactly the same!

I had pretty much this exact experience with an OP 39mm rhodium a year ago (almost to the day). It was my first Rolex and I'd thought for months about it. Put it on my wrist and thought it'd take abit of getting used to. 4 days in I just couldn't click with it. A beautiful watch but didn't feel very "me", and I didn't at all get excited to put it on. 10 years of wanting a Rolex, and the conclusion was anticlimactic at very best. I figured it was buyers remorse, and the reality just didn't live up to the expectation of the dream.
I ended up going back to the store, explained the situation, and the AD returned it with a full refund (very gracious). Fast forward 6 months and I started questioned whether it was the cost, or if I just didn't click with the watch itself. I got really friendly with an AD outside of my area during lockdown over emails, and after numerous conversations, he ended up offering me a BLNR. I picked it up in August and have never once felt a second of regret, and a day hasn't gone by where I've not been excited to put it on my wrist. The point is, when you know, you know. Don't put yourself through a year of wearing something that you know you don't love, you won't be able to get it out of your mind. Sell it, and save for what you love. |

Sorry, I might have missed this, but is the DJ41 fluted or smooth bezel? If smooth, I think the DJ is actually less "blingy" than a ceramic Sub. I suggest going straight to your AD and let your SA know you would like to purchase a Sub or SubDate. Depending on your location, you might get called within a year. Visit from time to time and chat watches with your SA during your wait. I'd continue to wear your DJ and when the time comes, add the Sub and you'll have a wonderful duo. If you can't see yourself with the DJ long-term, sell privately to end user for best return. Not much different than selling a car ... private sale, more work but higher return versus trade-in, no work but lower return. Good luck!

Since you already bought DateJust from AD, it might not be that hard to get your new Sub. from AD again, you might have to wait for awhile but it shouldn't be that long.
For the time being just wear your DateJust and you might start to like it better. After you get your new Sub from AD and you still have no love for DateJust just let it goes later.

Submariners are attainable at retail in Canada if you make a bit of effort to visit some ADs. If you purchased the DJ from a Toronto AD they should sell you a Sub at retail.

Like others have said, keep it. Wear it. Enjoy it. In a year, get a sub. Then you will have a great duo.

If you have a 126334 expect to get around 8000 to 8500 from places like Watchbox, Bobs, and DavidSW.

If your main apprehension is that it's too blingy...you're going to be disappointed with a sub, they get more people's attention than a date just. It gets my attention much quicker than a date just for sure. I'd say to start going to AD's and expressing interest in a sub. The same AD even. That way if you do happen to be offered one you can grab it. Personally I could never sell my first Rolex, and never will, but if you dislike your date just that much see if a friend will buy it off you when the sub comes.

This 'milestone' stuff means NOTHING to a buyer, dealer or potential buyer. You and you wife were obviously not on the same page when discussing the purchase. In fact, how did you end up with a watch you don't seem to like? And, so soon after the purchase. Doesn't matter. Get that reference out of your life as soon as possible. You'll get the most value if unblemished and you'll have your hearts desire sooner. Gotta' ask, didn't you try them on before buying? I assume there were extenuating circumstances which led to this situation since jewellery stores are notorious for bringing out the, as you call it, "bling" in diamonds, gold and watches. Oh well, just my opinion. Hope you get the Submariner of your dreams. Let us know how things work out. All the best in 2021. Sent from my SM-A520W using Tapatalk |

Have your wife contact the AD and ask if it's okay to return the gift/watch. She can honestly tell the AD that you'd be much happier with a Sub. Perhaps you'll get on a list and have a replacement sooner than later.

I had a DJ Wimbledon dial in two tone. Yellow gold. Thought it was too blingy, hard to read, did not bond. After a couple of months, I traded it to the AD from whom I bought it. I did not take much of a hit. I got a DJ 2 with a blue dial.

I am sureee many do. I don’t want to come off ignorant to that. Just not sure that would be a selling point for me personally to flip a watch. |

I Wanted a DJ as a child growing up seeing my brother with one. My partner made it happen and got it for me. She opened Pandora’s box and from that moment the flood gates of wanting another one opened up. Point is we will always want but make sure you want it enough to get rid of the DJ which looks like you thought about a lot before the purchase. Point it, it’s normal to then want something else and different but make sure it’s worth it. Will always love my DJ even if I don’t wear it like I said I would. And yes another Rolex came along after but giving up the one I always wanted never crossed my mind. Save the money up no matter how long it takes.

I hear ya on the polished center links. I wish the DJ would go back to an all brushed bracelet. If I decide to got for the DJ41 I think I would choose the Jubilee bracelet. I actually think it's less blingy compared to the Oyster with PCLs.

DJ41 Buyer's Remorse - Flip into a Sub?
Quote:
Good move. Wife’s suggestion makes sense. She will appreciate that you honor her request. I know how it feels to make a mistake and to want to trade out of it. I know it feels flashy to you, but it’s likely not as flashy as you think. It’s just your own perception; and yes, that matters. I get it. But it blends in pretty well. Often copied. It is one of the most copied designs on the planet. Seiko, and so many other clones. Just hit pause, wear it a while, and then make your move. There are a large number of us on this forum who will say that no one is looking at your watch except you. I know it’s hard to accept, but observe the people with you. They are far more concerned with themselves, their problems, their needs, etc.. 99% of them are not paying any attention to you, what you say, or what you wear. They are looking at their iPhones! Seriously. That’s my 2cents.

Keep it and add. Everyone has a sub. The DJ is like the jack of all trades, you can dress it uo or dress it down. A sub and a DJ is the only 2 watches you will ever need.

Personally I love the Rhodium Dial. I'm also not a flashy person and I consider that watch rather tame and elegant in a subtle way - maybe it's because I've never owned one? I do like the way it looks such as on this guy (Anthony Jesselnik):
It's a Jubilee bracelet version and I don't think it is too flashy at all. But anyways, I'm just saying me personally I think it's a beautiful watch and you should keep it, meanwhile sign yourself on a waiting list for a Sub at various ADs . When the time comes you can probably sell the DJ41 then (or better yet, keep both). I own a DJII on a white dial and I rotate between that and a Sub Date for work, they're both perfect for everyday wear IMO.
