I agree with just getting what you want from a trusted secondary seller rather than spending a fortune on something you like but don't necessarily love. I had a little apprehension about going this way at first. Luckily, with all of the feedback here about trusted sellers, I started perusing websites and found the watch I wanted at a (secondary) price I considered acceptable, I made the purchase, and I am very happy I did.

He replied back saying that one of the watches that I am interested in (DD40) will be here soon and he was going to call me to tell me about it soon. Honestly, I really used to WANT Pepsi but after all this crazy hype - my desire for Pepsi has actually started to dwindle. Yeah I’ll reach out to dealers and see what they say |

Make it clear you're looking for other watches. If they don't come up with more then go to anther AD and try again. Forget greys unless you're purely short-term, or long-term you've money to burn. |

My only question when considering that watch is, should I go for diamonds?

Only buy a watch you want and if the price isn't a big deal then go grey.
It makes no sense to put up with all this complication and then make a loss. |

[QUOTE=shkure;11322614]You should buy that DD for sure OP. But either ask for it to be bundled with a Pepsi (which most likely wont happen) or ask for a 10% discount (which will likely happen). I just got a 10% discount on a full Everose Rootbeer. After the discount there is no way you loose in the DD and it gets you closer to the Pepsi.
Excellent job getting 10% off on the full Everose Rootbeer. But I don't know if I would agree with "no way you lose in the DD". OP, call a trusted Grey and see what they are BUYING that champagne DD for....you might be surprised. |

I like the DD better than the Pepsi!
That being said, just buy Pepsi from Grey and be done with it, especially if that’s all you’re interested in. |

The absolute lowest i see the yellow gold/champagne/roman DD in Chrono is USD 40k. I would comfortably say that the OP can go to any gray market dealer and get $35k for it if unworn. OP, have a few calls to local grays and see what they would offer. I would be shocked if its below $35k. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Day-Date at $34.5k at your AD is a lot better buy than $20k for Pepsi at grey.
I am surprised that they give you pretty good discount, nowadays is very hard to find any discount for Rolex. This Day-Date is not the best looking for this model but it is one of the iconic timepiece for Rolex. The main thing is you buy only if you really like it.

You’ll find you have significantly more leverage with the very same AD if you don’t want to buy the same watches everybody and their dog wants to buy. Hard as it is to imagine there’s plenty of amazing brands and products out there that ADs will bend over backwards to sell you |

My golden rule is only buy a watch you really want. Sounds to me like the DD you're being offered isn't the exact one you want, so say no and wait for the right one to come along.

Try to bundle it, or ask for a WG DD to bundle if you’re not much of a gold person

What a world we live in.
People buying something they don’t want (in excess of 5 figures) just (JUST) to have a possible chance to be allowed the honor of buying something they want (in excess! of 5 figures). To those people, I would highly recommend a cold shower followed by a trip to the looney bin PS: DD and OP with champagne dials are no longer in style. Since the 80s...

The costs involved here might be insignificant and irrelevant to some, so it's really not of any concern other than aligning themselves to acquire what they are chasing...hence Rolex marketing and distribution strategies are proving their effectiveness once again. The pull of the "scarce" Pepsi is so strong it creates a PM sale to someone not really looking for one, but suddenly considering it... |

Do not over complicate it
only play the game with the AD IF you want to enjoy the DD40. Do not feel pressured to buy a 35k piece just to get the Pepsi. When it comes in try it on see what you think and who knows. like one guy said maybe it will be the new grail and make you forget about the Pepsi.

Bundle the two TOGETHER at the same time, or don't buy it at all. AD's will love to string you along, getting you to spend more and more money.
Then again, you could save money and just buy the pepsi grey market, and actually get the watch you want. |

being "offered" this piece isn't anything special, don't let them feel like they are doing you a favor. This exact DD is has been sitting in my AD's case for months..

It's extortion, plain and simple. If you insist on playing the AD's game, then you can always say that you won't take the DD now, unless he gives you a Pepsi ... NOW! That way, you've gotten the two watches you have wanted immediately without relying on the AD's representation that you may get a Pepsi in the future.

Honestly depends on the AD
if they’re “honest” and don’t do back door business to grey market then getting your DD would be a great start of a relationship, not only to get your pepsi but for future watches as well However if they turn out to be the “bad type” and there are many of those now then no guarantee of even a Pepsi

My point is simply; for high demand items the seller holds the cards, for average/low demand items the buyer holds the cards. We can’t have our cake and eat it. |

As far as my reading of it goes it’s entirely the OP’s idea. “ I'm thinking about getting this watch to build a relationship with the AD...” doesn’t sound coerced to me. |
