I buy what I like. Unfortunately, I like Rolex SS sports watches.

Like many others on this thread I only buy what fits my style . I like tool watches with brushed bracelets my Rolexes are Explorer, SD43 and D-Blue . Waiting on Exp II from my AD and seriously considering the AK . After that I don’t care to add any of the other Rolexes from the present catalogue.

I have passed on a Skydweller.
I would pass on a Daytona/DSSD. I have bought my SS Datejust 36mm and a 41mm Sub. I buy what I like Sent from my EML-L09 using Tapatalk |

It doesn’t have any bearing for me.
There are watches I like that I’ll probably never get because they’re unobtainable. However, there are also watches I like a lot that I could buy tomorrow if I really wanted to. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

“I buy what I like” lol yet your decision was influenced by hype¿?
Not saying this is the case for everyone. But everyone that says no is telling themselves a lie. Hype and Instagram and celebs play a HUGE role in Rolex pieces. Just look at the values of the green/gold Daytona after John Mayer “hyped” it up. |

As the owner of two of the least hyped SS models, no. But, the fact that one can enter a hyped model and get out with ease and with no loss makes "trying" a watch easy bc if you don't love it, you know you won't get hurt. Knowing you'll lose 30-50% off an Omega/Breitling/panerai makes the decision to buy heavier. I have been guilty of buying a hyped model here and there because there's no risk. If there was risk, I would behave differently.

If anything it may put me off a little. I prefer not to run with the sheep, but if I like a particular watch enough to want it, its popularity doesn't make a difference.
It is easy to see why the Daytona is so popular but it just doesn't do anything for me. Likewise the BLNR, which my AD offered me last year. Not interested. Each to our own. I would own my 116610LV regardless of its popularity. Pity I didn't spring for it when they were still on sale at ADs, but I was waiting for a particular milestone to celebrate with a Hulk. It's popularity cost me a premium, but it was a watch I had wanted for some time. |

Not in the least.
I wouldn’t pay $1000 for a BLRO or any green sports watch, simply not my taste. Watches aren’t investments or social media status objects to many of us. |

Kind of in the opposite way of most. I dunno why the hype fad Instagram blogger stuff really drives me away from the new and hot models for the most part. It makes me feel like that model has lost its originality and cool factor. I like my 5 digits and down to two 6 digit models that are outside of the hype stuff for the most part.

Platinum Daytona is a watch I can't come to like. It feels great, but the color combo is a big turnoff. I was scarred as a child being forced to wear brown corduroys and to this day its hard for me to wear the color brown. The ice blue isn't for me either. If there were more color combos, I'd be all over it.

I would say 90%+ of ppl buy PURELY because of the hype.
Seriously man lets be honest who would wear a green sub all day everyday? Or a Turquoise OP for man or any of the new colors they are all disgusting. Its all hype these days. Nothing else. |

The coloured bezels remind me of my sisters Mickey Mouse watch when she was 7yrs old. The Daytona looks classic, the DJs look classy and the LN Subs look traditional and nice - but all these coloured bezels with silly names can only be sold on hype, no one over 14yrs old would actually choose one if they were in cases at $10 each. |

This is a very very tough question. I buy for myself and also a couple of my watches have the "a little bit" of an investment side. But most of what I got I really use and love.

My foundation pieces (Sub/ExII) were purchased without any social influence. The others, I purchased with the mindset of filling a hole and not overlapping styles, rather than letting the style cues that made me choose those foundation pieces guide me in future decisions.
Was that caused by hype? No, it wasn't. Was that decision influenced by what I read here? Likely, at least to some extent. It's taken about 10 years but the further a piece strays from a 5 digit Sub, the less I like it. Pieces like the ExII, SKX, BB58 that have similar style features, I really like. |

Absolutely not. I’m a simple guy; want to have what I like the most and the one that really sings to me. I don’t care a bit about which one is the most popular or the best one to invest in.
I mean, who cares about what others think about your watch or how many people are looking and waiting for it. If that’s the reason you are buying it, you shouldn’t. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I have to admit ... it did for me. My AD called me with a SS SkyDweller. I went in and purchased it immediately. How could I not? EVERYONE was gaga over this model and it was highly sought-after. I wore it six months, pretty much daily, and ended up selling it for a 126610, which my AD also got for me. NOTHING against the SkyDweller, it is an incredible piece and for those of you that own them, please wear them in good health. But, it turned out it just was not for me. I was KIND OF interested in one before I got the call, but didn’t consider it a must-have. But, when I did get called... I HAD to get it, right?

Action talks louder than words. So many sheeple have collections made-up of ONLY the obviously hype watches. Just look at their collections listed below their signature lines.
They also drive hype cars, wear hype clothes and enjoy living their hype lives. It’s amusing to watch, actually. |

At this stage of my life, I look for usefulness, more than (colors) flash on my watches.

Just what I like
I tried on the BLNR and BLRO a few times, on different bracelets, not quite for me. Same with SKYD. Also anniversary DDs, certain Daytona configs etc. I don’t buy them because I’m depriving someone who possibly really wants one from owning it sooner, just for greed. So I pass if I dont like. |

I have bought a hype watch from time to time but hype has never affected my purchase decision. I know this for a fact because I have never sold any watch I own. The more hype a watch has, the less I wear that watch.
