I love the new explorer! I wonder what the two tone 36mm looks like? It's too bad these are still pretty hard to get. I have had no luck

But, the “smartest thing Rolex has done in 20 years” is an interesting question… to add to your list of “return to 36” I’d say:

1) Add Cerachrom to the Daytona.
2) Figure out BLRO cerachrom and add the jubilee to the GMT.
3) Return thinner lugs to the Submariner.

This is a fantastic review OP. Thanks for sharing. You picked up on one of my favorite elements of Rolex, and that is good bracelet taper. When you compare it head to head to the 39mm version it does look a little small. However, you don't wear two watches at once. On its own it the 124270 looks perfectly proportioned and absolutely amazing.

Really if you own any Explorer, you have all you need. Yes they work as part of a larger collection, but it's such an easy GADA (go anywhere, do anything) watch and just works with whatever you're wearing.

Rolex hit an absolute home run with the 124270. I hope you enjoy the heck out of it and wear it in the good health!

I 100% agree with your impressions and timeline too. It took about 5 days for me to fully appreciate what I've got and I haven't taken it off since. I think I got mine the week before you but man, I have not taken it off. I've worn... a hulk out for a dinner, but that's it. I was wearing this watch the moment I wake to the moment I sleep, but now I don't take it off while sleeping, it's that comfortable!

I love the 124270. I really wasn't a fan before I bought it, but I MORE than get it now.

Could it be a one watch collection? Yes. But how you arrive there would be only after having a collection and selling it all off. I don't think someone getting this as their first luxury piece would be that satisfied knowing that wearing a statement piece isn't really that awesome, they would buy the next piece and that would be a MISTAKE!

I completely agree on how you get to an "Explorer collection." I've cycled through a dozen watches before pairing down to my (39mm) Explorer. I picked up the new 36mm as well, but I've yet to wear it because It's for my son. But I've looked at it a lot and could absolutely have the new 36mm Explorer and nothing else and be quite happy.

Great review. I’ve had my 124270 for about a month now and it hasn’t left my wrist. My other watch (no date sub 41) is collecting dust. Won’t be rushing into it, but I’ll probably sell the sub soon enough. I guess you buy an Explorer because you want an Explorer, but you buy a sub because you want a Rolex. The new Explorer was made for real watch enthusiasts and it was released at the right time for me. I was really getting sick of the brand, but they’ve restored my faith. I was lucky enough to purchase from an AD with zero purchase history. So it can be done.

No, I haven't seen one yet.

I need to start stopping by the local AD more often.

They aren't as conveniently located as my former AD.

I'd probably buy it, too, even though I'll never let the 114270 go.
