I'm guessing that, for those who like to sit around talking watches on the internet (or those who wanted a Daytona a few years ago), TT is rarely the first choice. However I think there is a massive population segment that prefers TT. But they're the guys who buy a TT DJ as a retirement gift to themselves and wear that same watch for the next 30 years, or ladies who are looking for jewelry that also tells time and find that the TT go best with other jewelry they own. Stereotyping big time here, but you see where I'm going (in terms of how myopic our view is of overall preferences in the market).

Now, there may be a lot of people out there for whom TT is a second choice for a different reason: It's more affordable than PM. Perhaps the above-mentioned customers would really prefer 18k YG DD/DJ, but it's just not financially feasible, so they "settle" for TT. Very different, though (since they still went to the shop looking to obtain TT).

116613LB, and like several others, it was my first choice. In fact, I came into Rolex not knowing anything about the SS hype or "shortage" through the AD, so I literally scanned the entire Rolex catalogue online as though I could have anyone that I wanted

Hard to argue with the love of the CHNR. Stunning!

I just can’t decide. I badly want a TT for my 50th birthday in a bit less than two years.

TT Daytona or Sky Dweller are my favorites but getting up there out if my comfort zone.

I love the CHNR, both Subs and strangely the new Explorer. I have no idea which way to go! This is typical for me though. It took me nearly 3 years to pick my dress watch.

Was offered this and it was absolutely beautiful.

Always loved the Bluesy but just weren’t a fan of the yellow tex on the dial if I’m being honest, but soon as they brought out the new Bluesy with the white tex so crisp & fresh I got one straight away soon as it came out and I love it, I would honestly pick this watch over any SS sub or SS gmt any day of the week, but I don’t get caught up in all the hype I only buy watches what I like not what everyone else thinks you should have

I always love precious metal. PM timepieces look the best, TT second and SS last.

I have all of them, I wear PM timepieces more often than others.

I have three TT pieces in the collection (Black dial Skydweller, Submariner 126613LB and a CHNR) All were first choices as I had identified the need for them in having a diverse collection.

One week old today and yes it was my first choice. I ordered it exactly to my specs from the AD and love it.

I have one watch that I wear 24/7, the TT rootbeer. For me the most beautiful Rolex. Bought it cause I loved it, not because I had an opportunity.

My son is a high school senior and has impeccable taste in style. He is always very fashion-forward and knows what pop culture will like in the future long before I do.

He saw my two-tone blue Submariner and thought it was beautiful. He started buying Jordan shoes before they were all the rage.

If he likes two tone, then I guarantee that's what kids today will like as they grow up.

I have had either all YG gold or stainless for over 35 years. When I started looking at the Daytona, I went for the two tone. I have never warmed up to the ceramic bezel on the 116500 stainless and I already have a YG DD40 and YG green dial GMT-C, so went for the two tone. I have had it a little over two weeks and happy with the purchase.

Just as Dannp astutely observes that different folks buy TT for different reasons (including availability of SS), I think that it is also productive to think of what TT brings to each watch rather than whether all TT watches are good or bad.

I am not a TT lover, but certain models are aesthetically improved as TT pieces. Bluesy and rootbeer are spectacular watches that I would proudly own. (Although I may go CHRN in that battle just because, wow what a watch.)

TT is valuable not only as a point of access for certain models of Rolex but also as a way of bridging the gap of appropriate settings to wear a watch, particularly in the professional models. Like many others, I own a TT white face Daytona because I knew there was no way I would ever get a shot at a SS. Now that I own it, I love it, mostly because it bridges the gap between tough SS piece and dressing up to full PM. I can wear it in a bunch of different settings where I would not wear a SS Daytona and a bunch of settings where I would not wear a PM Daytona.

It is worth wondering whether oyster flex occupies a space that TT once did in terms of allowing a watch with PM to dress down.

I bought the root beer, because I didn’t want to wait for the Batman. There, happy! Lol - I loved it at first, then started noticing things I didn’t like, so sold it back to AD, no money lost, no harm done. Guess I am a SS guy.

Me too. My CHNR hardly leaves my wrist and I get so much pleasure and joy from wearing it. I would like a BLRO at some point but had I been offered both at the same time I would have taken the Rootbeer!

My first Rolex was a TT 36mm DJ. Black dial with sticks, fluted with the super Jubilee. Initially wanted the same but in SS as a daily wearer until I saw the TT version. Couldn’t stop looking at it. Love the watch. Works for me with a suit or just T-shirt and jeans. However I filled my SS itch with the Explorer 39 MK2. Following the Explorer I got the Bluesy which I wear most of the time. Depending on the individual watch it doesn’t matter to me whether it’s SS, TT, or YG PM as long as its just something that I really like the look of. Once I am at that stage it would take a lot for me to part with it. My next acquisition will most likely be a YG 40mm DD. Which one will depend on the dial that keeps me staring at it. Which for me signals it’s a keeper.

I deal with predominately two ADs and they both have a list of watches that I want, which included a couple two tones. I currently own both (Bluesy & Rootbeer) and the third TT in the image was my first Rolex I purchased about 25 years ago. I can’t say that if both the TT and SS models were offered simultaneously that I wouldn’t take the SS, but the TT that I own were purchased out of desire, not settled for or to build a relationship.

Your reference to the Daytona brings up another interesting angle to this, that suggests TT may be more popular than we give credit for. Until recently, you could always get a SS Daytona, they were just marked up 30-40% over MSRP. Not hard to find, though. Then the thought process for some would likely be:

"Well, if I'm about to drop $15,000 on a watch, at that point might as well get the one that's half gold; it's stupid to pay the same for all-steel."

In other words, it was a value assessment, and while one would have preferred the stainless at MSRP, if they were paying TT prices, they were getting a TT watch.

I absolutely love two tone. The Root Beer in TT is, IMO, one of the coolest, most beautiful, and most interesting watches independent of price or brand. TT DJ, especially the Wimbledon dial and the new Champaign fluted dial are stunning.

I’m saying “be honest” because I think it’s a tough question to answer given how hard it’s been to acquire SS and pure PM. And I think many have been steered to (or slowly came to) TT just to get in the game.

This isn’t intended to be a knock on TT, not at all. There are plenty of lovely ones, and this forum has shown me how wildly tastes can vary. But my hypothesis is that a very large percentage of two tone sales come as a result of not being able to get the buyers true first choice. So I assume it’s an effective Rolex sales and marketing strategy. (I see a lot of TT featured in their advertising.)

Availability and secondary market pricing would say I’m probably right. But since you’re all out there, let me know.

Full disclosure, I bought a TT CHNR when it first came out even though it wasn’t the watch I initially inquired about. It was beautiful, I enjoyed it for a while, but I didn’t really wear it, and ultimately sold it. I know that reference is a first choice for many, so expecting to see it mentioned a lot. That, and the “bluesy” appear to be standouts in this regard?

Anyway, thanks for playing.

You must be very young.
When I scraped together enough money, 20 years ago, to buy a Rolex after 45 years my choices were a TT DJ or Submariner.
In NO way was I paying thousands of dollars for a "steal" watch.

Bluesy was my free choice without any pressure when I was 35 and had many steel sports Rolex watches in my collection

I’m not sure what age has to do with it. I’m not young, and I also bought my first Rolex over 20 years ago. I did pay thousands of dollars for a steel watch.
