Lets be real. There is no alternative to a Daytona. The others are just chronograghs.

Daytona Alternatives
Great article you wrote! Thanks for posting.
The thing about chronographs is always the size for me. That’s really the appeal of the Daytona. It’s small for an automatic chronograph. Edit: I found it. That GP 38 mm chrono is beautiful. So is the AP 38mm chrono. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

No longer made, but the JLC compressor was really a thing of beauty.

The only chrono I’m interested in is the 321. Unfortunately it’s a bit like the Daytona in terms of availability
I haven’t seen it in real life, but I’m looking forward to it |

Daytona Alternatives
Vacheron 5500V if you have the wrist for it.
3 months after getting it I sold the Daytona. One is a $32,000 watch and the other... not so much. At a lower price point I'd be all over the new sapphire sandwich Omega speedy. I like it better in the flesh than the white zenith chronomaster I tried a couple weeks ago.

as an owner of a 6.5 inch wrist I don't have many options. Most automatic chronos are simply too large for me =(. The 38mm Zenith is my only real alternative at the moment.

Speedy. Classy closer to it roots. More compelling watch than Daytona IMO

A Speedy is a great addition/alternative to the Daytona, bonus if it's different from the basic black dial Hesalite.

Believe me, some day you'll understand. Before I retired in 2003 I knew the date and day of the week, as well as the details of my schedule every day. In the past eighteen years, though, freed from business commitments and being a slave to my calendar, I'm less conscious of the current date. I do keep a DayTimer for appointments and other commitments, but put on the spot for whatever reason I have to glance at my watch for the date. For that reason alone, in spite of my preference for Rolex, I'd choose a Zenith Chronomaster Sport over a Daytona without hesitation.

Rolex has done with watches what De Beers did with diamonds. Once you are able to overcome the brainwashing you will discover a world of fine, and often better, watches.

Tudor black bay chrono panda (or black dial) for me. You want something that is quality, that look somewhat like the daytona and most importantly imo, AVAILABLE at the store. The zenith chronomaster is cool too but not sure I want that 1/10 of a second complication instead of a standard tachymeter scale.

Speedmaster Pro., Zenith El Primero, Breitling Navitimer,/Cosmonaute, Tag Heuer Carrera 160th anniversary, Breguet Type XX/XXI. Each of these watches has a great heritage.

Daytona Alternatives
If the elusiveness of the steel Daytona is the allure, there really is no alternative. Nautilus maybe?
If the aesthetics of the watch is the allure, a good alternative would be the Tudor Prince Chronograph (discontinued) and the current Black Bay Chronograph. Now if you just want a good solid chronograph, there are plenty of more renowned chronographs from other brands out there. El Primero, Omega, Breitling, Carrera, are some that come to mind and all good looking watches that will serve you well. |
