My "collection" includes just a single Rolex watch, a 16710 BLRO. Also an Omega Speedmaster and a Casio G-Shock. Not much hype in that bunch.

Well... 5 out of 6 of my watches are SS professional models so I guess there's nothing I can prove. I'm not anti-hype, nor do I simply buy into the hype, I just love these watches.

My last Rolex purchase was in 1985. My most recent watch acquisition is a Citizen Eco-Drive. I like them equally.

I own a TT Daytona. Which is probably the most unpopular Daytona reference out there. Even among TT Rolexes, the Rootbeer and Submariner comes out ahead of it in polls. Had the opportunity to purchase the black dial 116500 when I was looking for a Daytona but wanted a white dial to balance out my black dial heavy collection. Went with a white dial 116503 in the end as the white 116500 was already reserved by another client.

But am growing to like the 116503. The bezel is a scratch magnet but otherwise I have no complaints about this watch.

Tried to work a trade with one of the popular TRF re-sellers. A rising tide raises all ships, except a 36mm TT DJ w/diamonds. I guess I need a flood.

Just paid full price for a new bracelet for my Bathyscaphe.
I just bought an IWC Big Pilot 43
I have 2 panerai’s
Last Rolex purchase was a TT Wimbledon
I am almost violent towards people in the City of London when their only watch is a Hulk or a Pepsi, and they don’t actually like watches.

I still wear my 34 mm OPD.
Not a single one of my Rolex is less than 15 years old.
I don't own a Submariner.
I have never started a "Will this retain or gain in value?" thread.
I don't care for Daytonas.

it’s all hyped now, no matter what you have in Rolex.
I started in mid 70’s with a grandfather ‘s gift. learned about Rolex in 1967/68 when ‘my dad got a classic DJ SS.

Do doesn’t matter when you started. Based in my collection , i could be accused of hype. But the SS White Daytona is the one I wear the least.

I will not go the IWC, GS or Breitking or Tudor way, not attracted to them

Started with my first 16610 in 1997….loved the submariner then and now. Been through most every rolex model, in one form or another, over the years.
Basically narrowed down what I like over those years, and as it turns out, I happen to like some of today’s popular/hyped models. I also dislike some of today’s hyped models.
It doesn’t make a difference to me either way, I just buy to wear and enjoy, hyped piece or non-hyped piece.
I think loving a nice watch since I was a kid in high school/college , starting with what I could afford…Seiko, Swatch, Casio, etc….makes me think, in my mind anyway….I just love a nice watch, and have an appreciation for the hobby, journey. If I own a really popular watch…. It’s because I’m enjoying it! Same goes for an unpopular watch I might own.
If you’re a recent hype/fanboy, or a journeyman…..doesn’t make a difference to me.
To each their own I always say.

First Rolex was a 114270 Explorer (pre-hype days). I now have a 116710LN GMT2 (chose this over the BLNR, doubt I'd let it go if a BLRO comes in).

I also have a Seiko and a Citizen watch.

I don’t feel the need to prove that I am anti-hype. I collect what I like at retail and many happen to be popular. Guess I have common tastes.

I have been in the game for 30 years and started with a Submariner. Since then I have owned most of the models and all of the metals in some form or another. I have a lot of watches but I am currently into my Submariner-C ND 114060, an Omega Speedmaster, Seiko Divers and some Doxa's. Other than the Submariner my Rolex watches don't see much wrist time.

I bought my first Rolex in November of 2007 when hype did not exist, end of story. For this reason my AD gets me watches that I want.

In my case it would be what I’ve turned down, Daytona C and SkyDweller blue dial

In addition, I wear my SKX009j more than probably any other watch

Hmmm. I still own my first Rolex -- a TT DJ bought new in 1984 or 1985. Although I don't wear it anymore. Got a platinum Daytona almost five years ago when they were not hot, and selling for 40% off while the white SS Daytona I originally wanted was a 40% premium. I wear it every single day, even though the price has doubled.

I turned down a BLNR as well as a YG/green dial Daytona which my wife absolutely hated.

I'd still like a SS Daytona, but that likely isn't happening. I'm content with wearing the same watch every day, although I love watches.

In 1998 I chose an Omega Seamaster over a Sub. From a selling/value increase point I realize that wasn’t a good choice, but I still have the Seamaster and would still have the sub, so resale is a meaningless measure to me. When I wear the Seamaster for a day or two I often wonder why I bothered buying any other watches. I like my Rolexes a lot, wouldn’t part with them now, but the Seamaster could easily be my one and only. Which I thought it would be when I bought it.

Watch collection comprising of Longines, Omega, Otis and Rolex, reasonably balanced, just need a light dial and a watch with a display case back, maybe just one watch.

What about your collection proves you are anti-hype?

IWC big pilot (x2) with eight strap options in addition to my Rolex collection.

VC 5500 reverse panda is my next target.

My first wristwatch at 5 or 6 years old was a diver inspired Timex. It was on a rubber strap and water resistant to like 3 ATM I thought it was the coolest thing in the world that it could play in the mud with me and then go in the shower. This one rotates regularly along with my Rolex and Brietling.

I prefer my Speedmaster Racing 40mm reverse panda over a Daytona. I like the Daytona fine but between the 2 I like my Omega’s classic vibe. I own a Squale GMT and appreciate their history in the industry. It is not a Coke, LN, or Pepsi homage, it’s black with like a yellowed tropic style lume and 24hr markers. I liked that better than the Rolex options. These exist and rotate alongside of my 2019 SubC Date.

I also have a Hamilton Khaki. I just get what I like! I’m eyeing an OP34 in the future either new or vintage… haven’t decided, but definitely NOT a bright colored dial.

I like many Rolex designs and plenty of them are “hyped” but I’d never wear them because I can appreciate things that are not my taste. I won’t buy a Pepsi or Hulk just to “flex” but I see what others like in them. They are just not my style.

Interesting question,

I bought my first Rolex in 1984, purloined and replaced with a TT 36mm Rolex Datejust in 1986. Back then Rolex was affectionally known as the Texas Timex. I buy watches because I like them, I don't sell them or trade them. But that said I have passed on an Air King to my son and to my SIL, an Omega Seamaster.

My current inventory includes:

Rolex TT Datejust
Rolex 16570 Polar 3186
Rolex Date Sub 126610LN
Rolex Cellini
Omega Moonwatch
Omega X33 Skywalker
Nomos Ahoi no date
Tudor Ranger
Breitling 42mm Superocean Heritage II
Tag Carrera Cal 5
Tag Formula 1 Chrono CAU1117
Tissot T Touch Solar

And my wife and daughter have their Rolex and other day watches as well

So, hype? No. I like watches and I like variety, but I'm a strong Rolex fan.

Me too, I enjoy getting the latest Casio GShock/Pathfinder/Protrek as much as getting the call from the AD. Getting a Rolex is now pretty rare for me as I don't play AD games. But back in the day, I could walk in and get a model I wanted for a discount. Now I'm content to be called and pay list. Crazy.

Interesting question and answers. I guess a lot of my collection qualifies as hype models. But I buy 'em only at AD msrp and I buy only what I like. I don't think about what others may think about them. I wear them because they look great and I feel good when i wear them.
