Not in my book. I've worn a TT DJ for almost every day of the last 21 years. Don't see a single scratch other than the stainless clasp!
Never been serviced and keeps great time.
How's that for "durable" and "robust"?

Full gold on bracelet is too much for me, both in terms of cost and looks. A WG dress watch on leather strap with gold buckle is as far as I went. I sometimes wear it at the office or on special occasions. For everything there's SS.

Imagine thinking Rolex is a tool watch in 2021

For those that let SS go for PM

There’s a heft and elegance that go with certain PM pieces. And beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

*not all these are mine

It isn't just about weight, even WG has a nice warmer hue to it. I do struggle to optically see the difference between SS and platinum though, with the latter being noticeably heavier. Much prefer PM if an option.

I think you'll want both an SS and PM in your collection. PM does feel so sturdy on the wrist.

I traded a 116520 Black Dial and a Polar EXP 2 and a few bucks for a YG Newman Daytona last year. No regrets whatsoever.

Let’s be real here. Grey doesn’t look good on your skin. Gold (yellow or rose) is a much better fit.

If money is no object, you go PM.

I'm not sure I get your meaning. Are you saying only steel pieces have the cool factor?

Anyway, here's the deal. Rarely is one watch the 'end all.' But even if it is, it's not the metal the thing is made from that determines if it is or not.

Traded away an explorer polar 216570 and my batman 116710 BLNR on oyster for a new YG submariner 126618 at my AD and I couldn’t be happier. I have a Pepsi on jubilee as my daily, and love my now smaller, two watch rotation. I agree with those who mention the entirely different feel between PM and SS. My two cents.

I added my first precious metal piece in July - a WG sub then a RG YM on OF in November and I’m already looking to add a Day Date or a PM AP… so that should answer your question… go for it

You can rationalize anything.

Me, no, the PM just doesn't do anything except make me a little paranoid, wearing a watch that costs as much as a car.

I wore a 2 tone Datejust from 1986 to 1998 every day. It doesn't show scratches at all because of the way the jubilee bracelet and fluted bezel are designed but if you actually look at the watch under a loupe there are tons of scratches. When I went to a 2 tone Nautilus 3800 for everyday wear I learned that the flat polished gold bezel scratches if you look at it hard.....and shows it. The same scratch you can't see on a Jubilee band or a fluted bezel shows very obviously on an Oyster bracelet with polished center links or a Nautilus/brushed flat bezel. If you don't believe me look under a Loupe or microscope (which I have access to given that I am an eye surgeon). My 2 tone Datejust still looks pristine from 3 feet to the naked eye but under a Loupe the gold parts look like the surface of the moon.

The only advantage to wearing and traveling with a PM piece quite frankly is that you can insure it for close to it's value to replace. My PM Daytona if lost or stolen will get me back an insurance settlement much closer to what it's worth (40K) . My SS Daytona will not....if it's stolen I'm screwed because I will get 13K back and I can't begin to replace it for that (what I paid for it a year ago from AD)

Many of us who own both don't see it that way and the market shares our view on this. SS pieces go up in value far more than PM pieces relative to their price to purchase new. The movement is the same either way and the amount of PM in these watches has negligible value. SS is less easily damaged and looks better /makes a hell of a lot more sense in a tool watch in the opinion of most of us. Get what you like but from an investment standpoint SS rules.

To me a gold Day Date is the boring "issued with a key to the executive washroom" piece obligatory in old gents who smoke cigars and drink Balvenie on the rocks with their buds at the club because they don't know of anything more interesting/creative or individualist to wear. That's the one Rolex I don't own and have no interest in owning. But to each their own.

That’s an interesting take. Hodinkee Chubb states that it will insure market value so I’m not sure how far off this is. I’m just still on the fence with moving up to PM. The state of our world right now is unfortunate and fear is a part of my decision making.
