Icon14 Five Years of Platinum

Such an amazing watch. You did the correct thing by enjoying it, that is what you are supposed to do. I'm turning 50 in January, and I did ask my AD to get me the Platinum Daytona with Baguettes. Let's see if they come through.

Thank you all. I do love the baguette version too. I've thought about trying to source the dial (without trading mine in) and being able to switch it up every few years, but have never really pursued it. Like the 5170P, it has diamonds but they are so subtle.

It's kind of sad that when I bought the watch It was less than MSRP by about 10K. I thought I was done with collecting and wanted to have a one watch collection. As it was the fates had a different idea. Two of the watches I wanted to trade in were under bid by the buyer so I kept them and traded them for other watches I wanted more. The sad part is what's happened to the value of the watch since then. For most a 100% growth on something would be considered a blessing. For me the difference between wearing a $65K and a $130K watch is immensly expensive. I wear it far less now then during the first year I originally owned. It's insured for the MSRP price. I guess I could get appraised and increase the policy but that's already pricey. Although I do wear it, it's no where near as much as I'd like to. Turing it into the baguette version would amplify the problem. Merry Christmas.

Wow, that's too bad. When I got mine, DSW sent an appraisal for MSRP. I asked him to send one for the purchase price, which was around 40% less.. I didn't want to pay to over insure it. Now the insurance value (which insurance has inched up a bit) is 1/2 or less than what I could trade it for. I don't really want to spend twice as much to insure it. I know, if you can afford to buy the watch, you can afford to insure it... Anyway, I still wear it every day and don't worry about it, but a few of the news stories here have gotten my attention. Either way, I'm going to continue to enjoy it. If I had bought it gray today, I am sure I'd want to insure it for that amount. If it gets stolen and I don't get a large enough insurance settlement to buy one again, I'll live. Values of all these watches have gotten stupid IMO, but that's another discussion.

I agree, for the price of one of these on the grey market you can buy a house in many parts of the country. Merry Christmas and enjoy your PtD!

It's a real beauty! Is it very heavy, though? I once held a smaller diameter Rolex made of platinum and found the weight to be shockingly heavy! I'm sure you get used to it but if you're like me and change watches every few days, going from SS to platinum has got to be an adjustment.

As a follow up I reinsured it with Hodinkee today for about market value; nothing could have been simpler. Really far easier than with Jewelers Mutual. I can't really attest to the price difference but also with Hodinkee the premium is payable in two six month installments.

I forget what it weighs, but even with two links out, I think it's over 1/2 a pound. But you seriously only notice it when you first put it on, or if you consciously think about it. I wear it for hours at a time and never think about the weight.

I'd be kinda curious about the premium. I think mines around $600-700 and includes a $10k policy on my wife's gold Date. But mine is way underinsured.

Thanks for sharing the great background and good to see that watch worn as a daily. That is a true grail right there. Appreciate all of your contributions to these forums.

Five Years of Platinum

Wow good on you. A platinum Daytona that actually gets worn. Incredible. I hope to post my Daytona C and plat dd with that much love in five years time.

To be honest I’d trade both for a plat dd with baguettes.

Yeah, he was such an interesting a good guy. Too bad he got tired of the direction TRF was going and checked out. Now he was swapping wheels and doing brakes with his! I don't do THAT.

Thanks. I don't post so much these days with so many threads on the same old same old topics.

I hope so too. Those are three awesome watches! Not sure I'd do that trade but there are no wrong answers choosing among those watches.

An awesome thread, great to see a watch being worn as it should be and not kept in a safe just in case it gets scratched.

Congratulations OP and thanks for sharing.

I don’t have a Platona (sadly!) but I insure my 5990 for the mrsp that I paid. I need insurance clearly, would be crazy not to, but I don’t need to profit from a theft. I always said I’d give up watch collecting if I had one stolen, so I don’t need a grey market payout to enable me to replace it. By not insuring at the inflated prices, I feel like I’m finding a good balance between risk and cost.

I said the same about motorbikes by the way, I said if I binned one and escaped with my life, I’d consider myself lucky, be grateful for the fun I’d have, and move on. And that’s exactly what happened. Same as watches, god willing I can enjoy then for life, but one bad incident and I will move on.

Yeah, I kind of feel the same way! Although based on your sig, you would still have quite a selection to choose from if you lost your 5990! I didn't buy this to make money. I sort of felt when I bought it that it would bottom out around $10k below where I bought it, and was ok with that. Obviously things have changed. While I would kick myself if it were stolen and I only got back my price + a little, I don't really want to pay $2k/year to wear it. I had stopped insuring my DJ for the last 25 years or so, and probably saved more in insurance premiums than I spent on the watch to begin with. The places I go with this watch never make me feel uneasy, so hopefully it will be fine. I guess I can afford to pay the insurance or to absorb the "loss" of having underinsured it. I choose to do the latter.
