As an owner of both SS Ceramic Daytona's, the BLRO and the BLRN and both the Polar and Black dial Explorer II's the logic I would put to it is this. Decide and buy immediately as the prices will not get any cheaper and are moving dramatically up. Is the Daytona-C worth current asking price? Not for me, but I bought at significantly less and would not pay the amount now. The one that I would consider paying current asking for is the BLRO and I like it on the Jubilee. The colors are amazing and the Jubilee bracelet adds a cool retro vibe for me. This watch is overpriced but it is not ridiculous yet but it will be. The play that gives you the most bang for the buck and is somewhat low key is the Polar Explorer II. I have the last generation and did not see why they updated it other than the movement. The white dial would be different in your collection and the price is right. What to do, BLRO if you want to spend that much, Polar Explorer II if you are being more reasonable. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I ditto an above suggestion to buy a really sensational vintage PM, of whatever flavor. It won't be crazy expensive, will shake up your collection, be a really gorgeous piece, and might even satisfy your itch. (Hahahahahahahahaha! Who are we kidding. )

I'm going to go grey. Definitely open to preowned. I'm kinda all over the place because there are few Rolexes I don't like. But I've narrowed it down to 3 models. But within those models, there are a lot of options I am considering.

I'd like your advice on which specific reference would fit in with my current small Rolex collection (16013, 126200, 124060), but also maybe the best "buy" at current insane prices.

1. Explorer II : I'm truly dial agnostic on this. I like white and black equally. I might slightly prefer the 5-digits due to their smaller size and look. For these I think I want to either go brand new and get the newer models with the updated movements, or if I go preowned just go 5-digit.

2. GMT Master : I think I like the BLNR and BLRO equally with a preference towards the Oyster bracelets. I also like the discontinued LN, but probably slightly prefer the BLNR/BLRO. I also like the 16710 but only with Pepsi bezel. No interest in any TT or PM here.

3. Daytona : This was previously my ultimate grail, but it's lost some luster over the years due to how difficult they are to get and also my preference for watches with dates. Soured on chronos a bit too. But it's still a watch I've wanted for a long time. If I go "big" here, it would be the black dial ceramic. I slightly prefer the white dial, but not $10k more. Daytona is also one of the few watches I actually like the TT model as well, but only the white dial. I also like the older 116520, stronger preference there for white dial.

With your collection, I would recommend the Daytona as a perfect third piece. Having said that, the BLNR is my favorite watch (but maybe a little too similar to your Sub).

A GMT of any sorts over a Daytona. I prefer the functions of a GMT and wear one every time I travel. My preference is Pepsi on Jubilee. Daytonas are nice and I love my white 116500, but the resale price is totally ridiculous and not worth it imo whatsoever.

I would say go for the GMT - either a 16710 or a 116710LN as they are discontinued. Daytona is too expensive on the reseller market and I'm personally not a fan of the Explorer II due to its size.

It's crazy that just 1 year ago these Exp IIs were all selling for the high $7K/low $8K range. I thought that was insane compared to just a few years ago when they were sitting around $4K. A rising tide lifts all boats...
I bought my 2006 Polar 2 yrs ago for $5,900!

What a trio?! Are you happy with these 3 or on the hunt for the next piece? Graduating to two-tone, full gold, AP, PP? Where do you go from here?

The Daytona would give your current collection the most variety, but the prices are definitely pretty substantial.

You aren’t fooling anyone. The next watch won’t be your exit. If you don’t get a Daytona you definitely will keep chasing the next watch. Nothing compares to a stainless Daytona.

Grey prices so insane right now, I think I’d wait and enjoy what you have.

Thank you. It’s funny, in December (when I picked up my new Kermit) my AD offered me a gold day date, a gold Daytona on oysterflex, and a platinum Daytona —- I turned them all down even though I could have easily purchased all of them with the cash in my primary checking account (I’m not saying that as a flex but to that I could have snapped them up). But I only purchased the Kermit.

First, I’m not really a gold guy. Although I did seriously consider the platinum Daytona - however, I would not feel comfortable walking around with that watch on my wrist.

Second, the addition on the Kermit completed the trio you see there which to me is “perfect.”

To answer your question, I am totally content and love this trio.

I actually made a video last week about this

Which "exit" Rolex should I buy at grey prices?

Get a Daytona, OP. You're unlikely to get one at MSRP and it completes your Rolex collection.

I was thinking an exit watch would be one you get buried wearing.

Couldn't agree more. Classic GMT in a precious metal.

Exactly this! Very well thought out post.

Also, I appreciate that you keep your watches synchronized nearly to the second. Which of these beauties do you wear the most? I have a sneaky feeling that the Explorer II's get more wrist time than people would suspect.

Submariner, GMT and Datejust are nice watches but imho the Daytona is another level. The GMT 16710 is a beautiful and amazing watch and used to be my daily wear for many years. But I then bought the black 116500 in 2018 and I am wearing it everyday. My GMT and my two submariners (5513 and 16610) don’t stand a chance against the Daytona.

Thanks, it depends on the time of the year and in the spring/summer the BLRO gets a lot of wrist time as the colors are so vibrant. The polar Explorer II gets a lot of time all year long and the black dial Explorer II see a lot of wrist time also. Either of the Explorer II's could be a one and only if I had to do that.
