I don't understand why there is a $40K premium for the blue dial. It's not like the old days when you could buy the black or white dial from your AD but only get the blue dial at the AP Boutique. Today you can't get any 15500 anywhere but the boutique, they're all boutique specials. And there's a plethora of blue dial watches available today including the 15202, only made with a blue dial and the PP5711/1a which was mostly made with a blue dial.
It seems like the dial color of choice for the 15500 should be black.

agreed - I wonder if the blue is the most coveted simply due to the fact that it is more rare / perceived as more special ...

Black, white or gray dials are much more suited for daily wearing - but I suppose rational thinking doesn't get us far when it comes to highly exclusive (and arguably overpriced) wristwatches

its simple
if all dial prices were the same, I and most people would order blue - that's why prices aren't the same.

It's because of exactly this. The blue dial was boutique only so it was selling for full price whereas the black and white would sell at a 30% discount back in the day.

Even though this isn't the case anymore this mentality hasn't been broken. Add to that the general hype of blue across every brand and you get what you are seeing.

But I agree to me black is the best color for the 15500, which is why mine was black :). Also, if AP made the only watch version of the 15202 widely available, I'd sell my blue dial 15202 for that too in a heartbeat.

The blue does look nice, but the white/silver and black tones are incredible in person

Agree the black dial is the best on the 15500st, even moreso on the OR models, and for men the white dial is probably best on the 37mm models as blue/slate shrink the perceived size of the piece from a distance, which you probably don't want on the smaller dimensions

I'd just appreciate it for what it is, and treat the non-blue models as being an absolute steal while it lasts

I bought my 15500 blue for $60k not too long ago.
And I hated myself for not buying it 2 yrs ago when it was around $40k thinking I should just wait on the list and wait for the call (which never happened).

But to see it go this high at this rate is insane and doesn't make any sense.

It’s because blue or green photograph better. Black grey white, it’s all of the same. Add color and suddenly you’ve made something that looks different, and thus better.

See prices of Rolexes. Colored dials are also more desirable. 126660 is an excellent exemple of that.

Just saw a blue 15202 on a wholesale page for $109.5k, watch only and missing a link or 2. No boxes or papers and obviously worn based on condition in photos so $123k for a new complete blue dial isn't that far off unfortunately

The topic was talking about 15500ST (not 15202ST) for $123K.

If 15500ST can command that high price, 15202ST will go up to $150K easily.

This secondary market is going crazy.

I’m pretty sure we are in a bubble stage now. The question is when it burst how low will things go.

Impossible to say unless one knows how many are held by "collectors" (or hoarders) vs "investors" and grey's. Previously I thought that the Zeitgeist slowly turning away from luxury watches was the most likely scenario for a return to the old normal, but seeing the annualized increases of many 100% over the last couple of months, a more explosive end of the current craze seems more likely.

Those who are confident that the trends from the last couple of months will continue should acknowledge that that would make the blue 15500ST a $1M watch by year's end.

That’s what watch dealers want people to believe though - that the market can only go one way which is up. The way prices have shot up over the few weeks make no sense at all. Just dealers throwing numbers out there to see who will take the bait.

Gone were the days to get a discount of any kind at the boutique

I do count myself very lucky to get 10% off my 15400 blue from the boutique but it was probably about 5 years ago now

Yes, but if you had that watch with a factory black dial you'd find it even more stunning, haha.

My 15500OR with full bracelet must be over $100K now, I will keep mine forever.

Just because it's listed as unworn doesn't mean it's actually unworn.

Experience has taught me over the years that you're most likely to come across dishonest grey market dealers who advertise timepieces they do not physically have in stock and condition needs to be verified in person.

This mindset is what Ponzi and pyramid schemes are built on.

Unhealthy for the watch industry in the long run, in my opinion.
