If you have a big collection, then you get fewer scratches per watch. My 16610 bought new in 2001 is still in great shape.

I’ve yet to own a watch i didn’t scratch within the first 5 days. I have a buddy that’s been wearing a 16610 for 20 years, still looks nearly brand new. I’m by no means rough on my watches and my hands haven’t been dirty or done manual labor in at least 15 years, but apparently i scratch them lol.

I never knew that scratches etc. were a such a big deal and upset a lot of Rolex owners until joining TRF in 2019. I bought my old 14060 in 1996 to wear every day, as it was made to be in Geneva. I've never let it be polished...serviced, yes. It's full of scratches, swirls and a few dings...I could care less! I know the clip below has been posted before, I just think it's funny and rather apt to this thread!

FULL DISCLOSURE - I do not like scratches. Not on my watches, my car, my motorcycle, my bicycles, my sunglasses, my shoes, the list goes on. In July 2021 I bought a white dial ceramic SEAMASTER 300M and STILL put a piece of scotch tape on the clasp. In August, 2021 I bought a blue Tudor Pelagos and while I would be bummed if I scratched the bezel, bracelet, case or crystal I have already scuffed up the clasp more than the Omega. On January 1, 2022 I finally got my SD43 grail and in the six weeks that I have had it, the clasp is already worse than the Omega and Tudor. (Banged it on the reef in Hawaii around week three. )
Strangely, my SD43 grail is the least that I am worried about scratching. I bought it to wear daily and because I do not ever see myself selling it, I am not as worried about scratches. Don't get me wrong, I am mostly talking about the clasps. A ding to the case or a scratch on the bezel, bracelet or crystal would be hard to take. My point is this; The only reason I want the Omega to remain perfect is because I can see myself selling it. The Rolex and Tudor are very likely never going to be sold. Therefore I am less concerned about scratches. |

I don’t baby my watches but I also don’t wear my scratches like a badge of honor either and after enough of knocking my watches into door frames I now instinctively slide my watch behind my waist as I go through doorways.

I’m still working on not caring about scratches. I’d love to get to that place mentally. I’ve never given the least darn about scratches with my lesser watches. Only had my new Sub for less than a year though, might be a while before that happens.

Correct. I mean i'm not going to go out on purpose and hit my watch against a wall, but will definitely wear it out and naturally get scratches on it

Omg, This thread is absolutely awesome.
You contributors with your scratched up and dinged up timepieces are so fortunate! You are all so past social media! It really shows that you can afford the watch or that you don't mind putting some "character" on the watch, and creating some "memories." Bravo!! I'm in the used market for watches right now, and I am only going to go after someone who's really worn and enjoyed the watch, i.e. dings, scratches, gouges, perhaps a few drops, mandatory light scratch or two on the sapphire crystal, nothing less, the more the merrier actually! Oh better yet, what about a refinished piece after all of that enjoyment, love, and memories. Those RSC agents and Independents can make the watch look like brand new, right? with all the original sharp lines shapes and finishes? Right? C'mon man. |

Same. I've banged all of my watches, including a delicate 5119, one too many times due to my carelessness. But that momentary "oh snap!" passes real quickly. But I don't go out of my way to bang around my watches, but I definitely do enjoy wearing them more, feeling a bit relaxed knowing I don't have to worry about that first scratch or a ding.

I bought my sub date in 2018 and babied it for the first couple months. Hell I even babied my Fossil watch that I was gifted when I was about 18.
I typically stop babying things as time passes and such was the case with Sub as well. After a few months I wasn't as paranoid about banging up the watch. It's wild because simple things like putting your hand in a jacket pocket with zippers, putting a backpack on / off, typing on a computer, etc will cause minor scratches and swirls. Probably impossible to wear a watch and not get some scratches and swirls no matter how careful you are. Yes, some people do put those protective films on their watches but even then it will probably get some scratches on it. Even though I agree with you in the fact that it is almost impossible to wear a watch without scratching it, I disagree with you on that fact that you are breaking it down to "right" and "wrong". Right and wrong is different for everyone. Don't worry about how anyone else is wearing their watch. Everyone has a right to wear their watches however they please. |

Silly. That’s like saying if your Ferrari or Lambo don’t have scuffed up, scratched or worse out bumpers you’re not driving it.

If you don't have scratches...you're not wearing it right. Am I correct?

10 year old Submariner. Sent it to Dallas for a repair under my insurance which covers damage. The bracelet use can be seen under the day/ date text. The clasp had a nice patina as well. The WG surround that surrounds the pearl was damaged pretty good. RSC insisted on a service I guess of how damaged it was thinking I hit it hard on something. You can see the damage in the picture at the bottom of the surround. It was due for service anyways at 10 years with lots of wear so insurance covered a new WG surround of the pearl and a service. I had them polish only the bracelet and not polish the case which was in great shape. Came back in mint condition and exactly 4 weeks to the day I dropped it off. It’s been a great well traveled Rolex, wouldn’t think of selling even if the price gets to $40,000+ Of course optional services they offered and said I needed were a new dial which was declined along with a few other options which I forget exactly what they were, no thanks. It’s been about 2 years since that service and at the bank lock box now as I have been on the GMT drug. Tudor GMT, Rolex GMT 116710LN, Rolex GMT 16710 bought new at Ad in 2001 and a Grand Seiko GMT SBGJ001 which is stunning with its white dial. The Seiko hand finishing, dial and bracelet are incredible. Hi Beat keeps excellent time.

Anything will pick up wear and tear, possibly the occasional ding. A half decent watch will take it in stride. Be careful what you wish for.

I have had my SD43 for about 3 months and decided to wear it every damn day (I’m a general contractor and it gets dirty and rough sometimes)no matter what I’m doing. A few scratches on the band and man it feels good. Who the hell am I saving it for anyhow! Life a life worth living, that includes wearing cool watches!
