The black ceramic bezel was the change. The older black dial contrasted the steel more. The white dial contrasts more with the black ceramic bezel more, it just pops. Black dial with ceramic bezel does make the watch look larger, just doesn’t have that pop as much as the white. Pretty much that simple.

There was even a company making a TIE fighter watch stand back in 2017, so it may have spawned from there. But like I say, it's a nickname that has been banded around for a while. Sent from my SM-N986B using Tapatalk

I agree, the reason is contrast. With the black face and black bezel, it reads as one giant circle.

So actually then imo the black is better. As the daytona wears as a 38-39mm watch. So with black it is visually a 40mm watch. Perfect size.
I've seen both ceramics and prefer the black as well. Sent from my SM-F711U using Tapatalk |

I think I actually agree, but as I said earlier would take either one that I can get, they are great looking watches and iconic regardless.

For the pre ceramic Daytonas, I just think the white dial looks washed out with the steel bezel. Black ceramic bezel fixed that for me. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the pre ceramic Daytonas in general. |

Old news for the initiated. Everybody knows 2 things. IRL the black looks better AND the white is just more legendary. I love both for those reasons.

I prefer the 116520 in black and 116500LN in white dial, but it's just my personal preference, mostly because of the contrast between the bezel/dial/sub-dials. I wouldn't go so far to say one is "much" better than the other though.

Those that say the black is better are the ones that couldn't get the white

I prefer the White SS Daytona. Both have their own personalities.

I had a Black Daytona 500, couldn’t read the dial under most lighting conditions. Seemed pointless to keep a watch that couldn’t be quickly read. I have a White 520 and never any issues reading the dial. To me a watch is an Instrument for telling time not a fashion statement. But that’s me,seems a lot of people today lean towards the fashion statement over functionality in the watch industry. Which is better ? No right answers there , just what works for you.

I mean that is not necessarily true - I am going back and forth on it now. I always want an all black watch to have, so if I give my son my 124060 someday I would want the black dial. It all depends. My AD said the white dial is harder to get but they are both hard to get.

Of the two the black dial is easier to get than the white, at least in the UK.

They are both beautiful. Have to own both and wear the one that matches your outfit that day.

Black ceramic daytona is much better than white
Quote:
Both versions are stunning pieces. I think the white dial version photographs better than the black. In person, I actually like the sleekness of the black better than the white (which appears a bit "flat" to me). Having said that, I do not really like white dialed watches and prefer black and blue dialed watches ... so, take my opinion as just that, my opinion. The best summary to me is... The white dial Daytona is prettier and more classic (vintage) looking. The black dial Daytona is sexier and more modern looking. The black dial definitely has a Darth Vader mystic to it ;) |

White all the way, if you have the standard Subs, GMT you have enough black. Only white dial a Rolex I own and would buy. Looks fresh in the sun
