Bodyguards

I’ve played golf at places where I’ve seen a few golfers insist on having bodyguards with them. Mostly old money types. It’s kind of funny to watch the bodyguards at the 19th hole trying not to look like they are bodyguards. The richest people I know don’t even have a chauffeur and tend to drive Toyota Landcruisers or something similar. They don’t like any attention at all, they’d go nuts if they had to have a bodyguard.

Semi related….my friend’s early 20’s son works in Miami as a “guard” for international cruise ship employees who are housed in a hotel while waiting to leave on the next trip. For the most part they are not allowed to leave the compound but if they do have a legitimate reason to they must be escorted.

I was staying at a hotel in Hawaii a number of years ago when Madeline Albright was secretary of state and she stayed at the hotel for a couple of days while coming back from somewhere in Asia. It was very low key but she had 2 guys with her and they came in their usual black suits.

When she was laying out by the pool they were there wearing black Hawaiian shirts that they bought from the gift shop, I guess to "blend in" (lol). Two burly guys with ear pieces hanging from their ears looking menacing by the pool.

Peter Fonda was also there that week hanging by the pool in a Speedo.

What a week.

Several years ago we were in NYC and walking down 57th street. There was a small crowd gathering around a hotel sidewalk with temporary barriers in place preventing us from walking by. Just as we got to the crowd Celine Dion walks out surrounded by a small entourage and a few cops. I snapped this picture with my cell phone.
The black guy wearing sunglasses was her bodyguard. In less than an instant some guy pushes from behind us and try’s to attack Celine. No idea why. Her bodyguard reacted and grabbed this guy quicker than I’ve ever seen anyone move. He didn’t get within 15’ of her. He quickly introduced the attacker’s face to the hood of a parked car as the police came over to help out. That’s what a bodyguard is supposed to do and he did his job with incredible efficiency.

About 30-35 years ago in Philly there were a dozen security guards milling outside a building on Chestnut near 15th. Real pros, male and female, all washboard taut, ear thingles, barracades, no one was talking about "who". Then the armored limo pulls up.

A scrum from the limo to the hotel. I start clapping and cheering wildly.

A REALLY tiny old SE Asian man whirls his body around, big toothy grin, huge wave at "the crowd" before being propelled - feet off the ground - into the vestibule. No one thanked me for identifying the flaw in security.

But with security like that, I'd bet it was someone several organizations wanted.

The poor assailant probably had heard “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic too many times and simply snapped.

In my early days of flying we had armed guards to and from the hotel in certain parts of the world. Now I dont go to S Holes like that anymore.

Never hired a bodyguard but I've hired an escort or 2.... giggity

My understanding is that the security/bodyguard industry greatly expanded during the GWOT. I had a few buddies that got out of the army and went to work for security companies that had contracts with the US State Department or other organizations. Obviously, a lot of that work has dried up now but I know a few that are still involved with it.

Many years ago, was in a small United lounge at Dulles.
Perhaps 5 other passengers in there.

The UN Secretary General came in for a bit, sat down about 15 ft from me.

More than 1/2 dozen security personnel crowded into the lounge (again, a small space), with ear pieces, seemed constantly vigilant. It seemed they all had dark blue suits.

I got up a couple of times to get something to drink/eat, and one guard was standing in the food area. Felt like I was being watched the entire time, even as I sat quietly.

I did a consulting trip to Emergency hospitals in China in 1996. There were seven of us, and initially, we spent much of our free time exploring neighborhoods and establishments off the beaten path. Apparently we showed too much interest in Beijing’s nightlife and exploring the political views of young people willing to talk about them. We found ourselves accompanied for the rest of the trip by two men who were being provided for our own “safety” though their main task seemed to be to keep us from enjoying ourselves and talking with normal people.

Depends on the country and company. Some companies have policies most likely based on their corporate insurance that says executives or employees of a certain level going to certain countries need security to be covered for liability or kidnap and ransom insurance. I had a guy in the Philippines who was a nice guy but kinda useless and definitely there to check a box, everyone has security there, told him to go home after the first day and I wouldn't say anything. India I had two guys, one basically to carry stuff so I could be entirely empty handed at all times (robbers like to shoot whoever has the bag or briefcase they imagine is full of diamonds) and another to basically shoo away poor people, that was kinda helpful actually. Neither time did I really feel secure and both times once I was done with work I stayed in country, went on vacation without security, and was totally fine. I'm sure some people have more dangerous profession and had ex Navy seals or Liam from Taken working their security but for me Corp security has never been comfortingly secure.

One time I got a ride back to my hotel from a drifter in car absolutely slammed on the ground. It was hilarious watching security try to get a mirror under the car to check for bombs.....
