The main answer is diet.
Exercise is for fitness. Using them both is great but you should be able to get to and be at a specific weight by controlling your diet. And carbs are the main area to target. Eat real food, do some intermittent fasting, and learn how specific macros interact with your body.

Also, I cut down on my bread / sugar / rice / noodle. Actually, I don't think I lost any weight. I just run more, and find myself running faster. :)

I have a big appetite and exercise a lot. I've never been heavy, but as I've aged, I have really cut down on how much I eat. Especially at lunch, which used to be as big a meal as most people's dinner. My weight hasn't varied by more than 5 pounds for 20 + years. If I step on the scale (which isn't often) and my weight is up a few pounds, I dial it back. If the opposite, maybe I eat a little more.
I do think it's hard to control weight solely based on exercise or solely based on diet. A combo of the two works for me, and seems to make sense. I am lucky in that I enjoy lots of food that is healthy, and love to run/play sports/exercise. Not that I don't like a good burger and fries, I just don't need to eat that every night. And I do enjoy bourbon and beer....

Six years ago I was 265lbs and just under 6 feet. I loved to eat but was more in love with my sofa. Somehow I started rock climbing (three 90min sessions) and strenuous hiking (10-25 miles) a week. In about 18 months I was down to 167lbs and fluctuate +/- 3lbs on any given day.
As far as my diet, little has change. I’m a +3,000 calorie a day kind of guy. As far as my physical health, everything has changed. My doctor has taken me off my blood pressure meds, my cholesterol meds and my sleeping pills. I used to live at my chiropractors office, haven’t needed to see him in years. As far as my mental health, like night and day. I feel awesome! BTW: Don’t let anyone tell you that your to old, this all started when I was 55. Last November at 61 I was able to hike the Grand Canyon, rim to rim, my third crossing in 10 hours 55 minutes. The first time I did it was just shy of 14 hours. So for me the secret formula to weight loss was and is, burn more calories than you ingest.

You guys ever try keto? If you cut out all carbs and sugar, you can eat all the fat and protein you want and you will shed the pounds quickly. You can't cheat or you will fall out of ketosis. But once you're in, the pounds drop off. I'm three weeks in and, while the lack of carbs and sugar make my workouts much more difficult, the results come pretty fast. I've done it before and dropped 30 lbs in two mos. I did not cheat at all. You can have up to 30-35g of carbs per day. But you're better off shooting for 0g, as you can sometimes hit the limit on accident. But it definitely works.

I think it's great the calories in/calories out crowd is around because Big Pharma and the medical establishment loves it. It is actually the basis of the obesity epidemic in the US and a lot of the western world and rakes in billions of dollars in diet industry, and unused gym memberships.
Anecdotal stories not withstanding and they are inspirational, but to me if someone has the will power to exercise to a rather extreme level, then they should also have the will power to eat properly since eating properly in a country with obesity at something like 42% (an increase of 25% since 2008) is where the problem lies. People eating garbage that is disguised as food. Calories in/calories out is a completely misleading and simplistic statement because the body does not treat all calories the same. Carb calories are converted to fat with an insulin spike added to the mix which can/does lead to insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes and fat retention. A good read (and I've read a ton of nutritional books) is Dr Mark Hyman's "The Pegan Diet" a rather great instruction on proper eating even though the title is an inside joke.

Everyone is different, However. Less calories in = Less calories out. Your body doesn't know you are just trying to shed a few pounds. You give it less calories it will survive and stop burning calories. Ever notice how when people dont eat as much they are usually cold? Metabolism slows...

Someone mentioned cutting out alcohol. I think this helps, because the body can more efficiently metabolise fat and not first have to metabolise alcohol. I also think lifting weights is better than doing cardio for burning fat, although a combination of the two would be ideal.
